Chasing the Northern Lights in Norway’s Lofoten Islands

Story by Chase Guttman

Norway is one of the most special trips that I get to lead for Photo Workshop Adventures, most particularly because we are often blessed with once in a lifetime displays of the Northern Lights.

The Lofoten Islands are truly a landscape photographer’s dream, with their jagged mountain peaks, quaint coastal villages, vibrant red fishing shacks, lovely beaches, and impressive cascades. Every turn in the road reveals another scene worth photographing. The light changes constantly, transforming familiar vistas into something entirely new from one moment to the next.

With the archipelago located north of the Arctic Circle, this remarkable destination offers an experience that feels both wild and welcoming. It is a place where dramatic scenery and quiet moments exist side by side, rewarding those who slow down and take it all in through the lens.

The Spectacular Northern Lights

Dancing Beneath the Aurora Borealis

Every night in Lofoten brings the possibility of witnessing one of nature’s most extraordinary performances. With a little patience and a bit of luck, the aurora borealis emerges overhead in ribbons of green, purple, and pink, shifting and swirling across the Arctic sky.

On my last adventure, we had four separate nights of Northern Lights displays, each one more spectacular than the previous.

Departing in the darkness, we chased the vibrant beams as they danced through the night sky, finding the most stunning foregrounds to set up our compositions and our tripods. One memorable evening, the iconic view over Hamnøy became our canvas for especially colorful long exposure photography. Another time, later in the trip, a sharp shark tooth-like rock formation out at sea anchored another breathtaking image of the hued heavens above.

There is anticipation that builds as everyone checks the sky, adjusts camera settings, and waits for the first signs of movement. Then suddenly, the entire landscape seems to come alive. When Mother Nature cooperates, there is nothing quite like it.

Fishing Villages In Norway

Coastal Villages, Arctic Charm, and Norwegian Life

By starting in Oslo, we gain a sense of Norwegian life both in the big city and in little hamlets scattered throughout the country. The contrast between the capital and the remote fishing communities adds another layer of richness to the journey.

One of my favorites is Nusfjord, a charming marina stuck in time, with its radiant red and yellow rorbuers and a picture perfect viewpoint overlooking the small community. Wandering through its narrow paths, it is easy to imagine generations of fishermen who once called this place home.

We even get to explore the town of Å, which must be the first entry in a list of alphabetized towns around the globe. Beyond its memorable name, Å offers its own slice of authentic Norwegian character, surrounded by dramatic peaks and pristine waters.

These villages provide more than beautiful photographs. They offer glimpses into the traditions, resilience, and simplicity of life above the Arctic Circle.

Capturing Lofoten From Every Perspective

If you’re interested in aerials, the region is rich in visual opportunities captured from above.

Flying a drone, you can use the roads as leading lines, as distant bridges connect each individual island in the chain one by one. An increase in height reveals novel angles to compose the dramatic mountain tops or exciting perspectives to capture the villages below.

Of course, when the weather is cooperative, we are out shooting sunrise and sunset, capitalizing on that beautiful golden glow as it hits the highest peaks and illuminates the buildings by the water. The soft autumn light enhances the textures of the landscape, while the changing conditions encourage creativity and experimentation.

Our Norway adventure is also timed in the heart of fall, as the vivid foliage slowly travels down from the mountaintops, making an already polychromatic destination pop even more brightly. The combination of autumn colors, rugged coastlines, and Arctic light creates endless possibilities for photographers of every skill level.

Whether you are refining your technique, building your portfolio, or simply hoping to witness one of the world’s great natural spectacles, Lofoten has a way of exceeding expectations.
