Nepal: Majestic, Mountainous, aMystical!

Join us on our 10-day Nepal Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure to experience what an ancient Hindu manuscript describes as the “Land of gods surrounded by beautiful mountains.” Kathmandu, the capital of modern Nepal, lies within a valley encircled by the snow-capped Himalayan Mountains, gentle green terraced hills, ancient temples, shrines, and red-tiled-roofed houses. The Kathmandu Valley is home to three historic districts that were once part of different kingdoms and empires. Bhaktapur, known as “The City of Devotees,” is filled with ancient Hindu and Buddhist religious sites. Patan, also called Lalitpur or “The City of Beauty,” is renowned for its intricate wood and stone carvings, as well as its remarkable bas-reliefs. Meanwhile, Kathmandu is often referred to as “The City of Temples,” home to the famous Kathmandu Durbar Square, the social, religious, and cultural heart of the city, where exquisite monuments, sculptures, and temples stand as timeless reminders of Nepal’s rich heritage.

We will embark on a photography journey through the streets of Kathmandu, a city that pulses with spirituality and timeless tradition. Our focus will include Boudhanath, Nepal’s largest Buddhist stupa, where colorful prayer flags cascade from the towering spire like a Buddhist maypole and the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha gaze down upon robed monks circling the immense white dome. We will also photograph the devotion and rituals of worshippers at Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Here, our cameras will seek to capture Sadhus draped in vibrant marigold-colored garments, alongside yogis, monks, and everyday devotees gathered in prayer.

Near Patan and Bhaktapur, our photographic focus will shift toward the spirit of craftsmanship and trade that defines these ancient cities. The streets are alive with local artisans and vendors displaying pottery, papier-mâché, woodwork, and countless handmade crafts that reflect Nepal’s artistic heritage.

One of the most memorable experiences of our time in Nepal will be immersing ourselves in village life through a homestay in Panauti. Here, we will document the warmth of local hospitality, the routines and rituals that shape daily life, and the intimate moments shared among families and communities. The following day, we will continue to Chamkharka, home to the Tamang people, where we will enjoy another meaningful homestay experience. Following a pre-arranged portrait session, our photography will focus on the stories, traditions, music, and culture that define Tamang life as we sing, dance, and dine alongside the local community.

Leaving the Kathmandu Valley behind, we will journey to Pokhara, a scenic lakeside town surrounded by majestic Himalayan peaks that seem almost within reach. With its tranquil lakes, waterfalls, caves, and dramatic mountain scenery, Pokhara offers exceptional opportunities for landscape photography. We will photograph the area during the soft light of dusk and the peaceful twilight that settles over the mountains each evening. We will also take a boat ride across Phewa Lake to photograph the pagoda-style Tal Barahi Temple, a spiritual island sanctuary resting quietly amidst the calm waters.

This 10-day photography adventure is more than simply a chance to capture remarkable images; it is an opportunity to elevate your craft and experience the world through a new perspective. Our expert photographer guides will lead you to the most photogenic locations in the best light while helping you develop the art of visual storytelling. Along the way, you will refine your technical skills, learn how to anticipate decisive moments, and discover how to transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary photographs through creativity and intention.

Join us for inspiring discussions, meaningful camaraderie, and unforgettable experiences throughout this remarkable journey. Nepal, with its Himalayan landscapes, ancient villages, rich traditions, and welcoming people, offers the perfect setting to create a truly unforgettable visual narrative. Your photographic odyssey begins here.

ITINERARY

NEPAL PHOTO TOUR – 10 DAYS

Day 1 | Arrive Kathmandu

Flying into Kathmandu on a clear day is a breathtaking experience. As the aircraft descends into the valley, panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks unfold beneath you, creating an unforgettable first impression and the beginning of a remarkable journey through Nepal.

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, we will greet you and transfer you to our hotel, where our driver and local guide will assist you with your arrival. We strongly recommend arriving one day early to recover from jet lag and comfortably settle into the rhythm of the city before the tour begins.

Day one officially starts at 2 PM in the hotel lobby, where we will begin with informal discussions about each guest’s photographic goals, creative interests, preferred subjects, styles, and techniques. We will also introduce PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” along with our signature “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic approach.

Afterwards, we’ll head out to explore the city for an afternoon of photography before gathering together for our “Welcome Dinner” celebration at one of our favorite Nepali restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Pashupatinath - Boudhanath

We’ll depart early just after sunrise and make our way to Pashupatinath Temple. One of the most important Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Pashupatinath is beautifully situated along the banks of the Bagmati River. We’ll encounter many Sadhus, known as Holy Men, along with Hindu pilgrims who travel here from around the world to pray and worship. Throughout the area, we’ll also find small shops and street vendors selling offerings and traditional items, creating countless opportunities for documentary and street photography.

After exploring Pashupatinath, we’ll continue on to Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal. Surrounded by Tibetan restaurants and handicraft shops, Boudhanath serves as an important cultural and social center for the Tibetan community. As one of Nepal’s most significant Buddhist monuments, we’ll witness monks deep in prayer alongside Buddhist devotees gathering around the stupa during the evening hours. The atmosphere here provides wonderful opportunities to photograph Tibetan street vendors, monks, local life, and the spiritual energy that surrounds the site. Afterwards, we’ll return to our hotel in Kathmandu for the evening. (B)

Day 3 | Patan Durbar Square - Changu Narayan - Bhaktapur

We will begin the morning with a drive to Patan. Patan is regarded as the richest in culture and history among the three Durbar Squares and offers a remarkable collection of wooden artistry displayed through its monumental historic architecture, reflecting both ancient and medieval influences. Throughout the narrow backstreets, we’ll discover intricate wood carvings depicting the sutras of Lord Kamadeva, the Hindu god of love and desire, adorning beautiful pagoda-style temples. Known as the “City of Artists,” Patan will provide countless visual treasures for our cameras.

From there, we’ll drive toward Bhaktapur, the “City of Devotees.” Along the way, we’ll stop in Thimi, one of the valley’s ancient cultural settlements, famous for its pottery and papier-mâché masks. After Thimi, we’ll continue to Changu Narayan Temple, an ancient Hindu temple perched high on a hilltop also known as Changu or Dolagiri. Surrounded by forest, champak trees, and the small village of Changu, this peaceful area remains relatively untouched by modern development. The local community still relies largely on agriculture and small family-run businesses near the temple, offering us a glimpse into the rhythms of rural Nepalese life.

Later in the day, we’ll continue on to Bhaktapur, our final destination for the evening. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is not only a historic landmark but also a living center of daily life, where local residents continue to work, trade, and preserve traditional crafts. The area is lined with small shops and businesses, creating excellent opportunities for street and documentary photography. Bhaktapur is especially renowned for its handcrafted pottery, and we’ll have the opportunity to observe artisans at work upon request. Since we’ll be staying overnight in a guesthouse within the Durbar Square area, we’ll also enjoy an evening photo walk to capture the atmosphere and local lifestyle after sunset. (B)

Day 4 | Dhulikhel - Panauti

After breakfast, we’ll head to Dhulikhel, one of Nepal’s most popular destinations for viewing the high Himalayas. From the edge of the ridge, we’ll witness a breathtaking panorama of snow-capped peaks stretching across the horizon, from Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lhakpa to the massive forms of Gaurishankar and nearby Melungtse (23,560 ft / 7181 m), and as far as Numbur in the east. Remarkably, the old town of Dhulikhel escaped the devastating 2015 earthquake with minimal damage.

Yet there is far more to Dhulikhel than its extraordinary mountain views. This is an authentic Newari town, complete with temple-lined village squares and a daily rhythm of life that extends well beyond tourism. Here, we’ll have opportunities to photograph the Himalayan range alongside traditional local culture, architecture, and everyday village life.

Later, we’ll transfer to Panauti for a memorable homestay experience. Upon arrival, we’ll be welcomed by our host family with a traditional tika and garland ceremony, followed by welcome drinks and introductions. After lunch, our local guide will lead us on a walking tour through old Panauti, where we’ll take part in seasonal activities and interact with local residents, offering a deeper connection to village life and traditions.

In the evening, we’ll gather with the family to learn more about traditional Nepali cuisine while enjoying a home-cooked meal prepared especially for us. We’ll spend the night at our homestay in Panauti. (B) (L) (D)

Day 5 | Tamang Village - Panauti

Early in the morning, our homestay host will take us out to witness the sunrise over the surrounding landscape. Soon after breakfast, we’ll head to Chamkharka, a traditional Tamang village where we’ll have the opportunity to observe and experience the Tamang way of life.

One of the highlights of the day will be a pre-arranged portrait photo shoot with members of the local Tamang community, providing us with meaningful opportunities to capture the culture, traditions, and character of the village through our photography.

In the evening, we’ll enjoy traditional dancing and singing performances while tasting local wine and sharing a traditional Nepali meal with our hosts. We’ll spend the night at our homestay. (B) (L) (D)

Day 6 | Tamang Village - Bandipur

This morning, we’ll begin the day by participating in a daily puja, a traditional prayer ritual, with our host family, followed by breakfast together. Afterwards, we’ll drive to Bandipur, a charming hilltop village located along the Kathmandu–Pokhara Highway in the Tanahun District.

Situated at an elevation of 3,297 ft / 1005 m above sea level, Bandipur overlooks the Marshyangdi River valley below and is home primarily to the Newar and Magar ethnic communities. We’ll spend time exploring the village and its surroundings, where countless photographic opportunities await. From the ridges above town, we’ll be treated to sweeping panoramic views of the Himalayan mountains, while within the village we’ll photograph artistic traditional houses, pagoda-roofed temples, and the timeless atmosphere of daily life in this beautifully preserved settlement. (B)

Day 7 | Siddha Cave - Pokhara - World Peace Pagoda

Early in the morning, we’ll walk to Siddha Gufa, the largest cave in Nepal, known for its impressive formations of stalactites and stalagmites. After exploring both the cave and the surrounding ethnic village, we’ll continue our journey with a drive to Pokhara.

Pokhara is one of Nepal’s most celebrated travel destinations, offering a wonderful blend of adventure and relaxation. It serves as the gateway to the Annapurna region and attracts travelers of all ages with its wide variety of experiences. Here, visitors can enjoy trekking, boating, hiking, paragliding, cycling, sightseeing, or simply relaxing beside the lakes while taking in the breathtaking backdrop of the Annapurna mountain range.

After arriving in Pokhara, we’ll visit the World Peace Pagoda, a beautiful Buddhist pagoda-style monument perched on a narrow ridge high above Phewa Lake. From here, we’ll enjoy sweeping views of the lake, the surrounding hills, and the majestic Himalayan peaks beyond. (B)

Day 8 | Sarankot - Pokhara - Seti Gorge - Davis Falls - Phewa

Pokhara, one of Nepal’s most beloved travel destinations, is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and spectacular mountain scenery. Today, we’ll take a short hike to Sarangkot, situated at an altitude of 5,223 ft / 1592 m and considered the highest point along the Pokhara Valley rim. From here, we’ll enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the entire Pokhara Valley along with the magnificent Annapurna mountain range, including Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Machapuchare, Annapurna III, Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, and Lamjung Himal.

In the afternoon, we’ll continue exploring Pokhara and its surrounding natural attractions, including Seti Gorge, Mahendra Cave, and Devi’s Falls. Each location offers unique photographic opportunities and a deeper appreciation of the region’s dramatic landscape.

In the evening, we’ll enjoy a relaxing boat ride across Phewa Lake and visit the beautiful Tal Barahi Temple, situated on a small island in the middle of the lake. (B)

Day 9 | Kathmandu

In the morning, we’ll fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to our hotel. The remainder of the day will be free for you to relax at leisure, revisit a favorite location for additional photography, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the city at your own pace. Upon request, we can also arrange an alternate activity or private photo shoot.

In the evening, we’ll gather for our festive “Farewell Dinner,” where we’ll reflect on the experiences of the journey, share our favorite photographs, and enjoy an evening filled with great conversation, laughter, and camaraderie. (B) (D)
