INDIA – HOLI

SRI LANKA

Varanasi is the India you imagine. One of the most colorful places on earth.

Varanasi is the India you imagine. One of the most colorful and fascinating places on earth, with surprises around every corner. Pilgrims come to the ghats (steps) lining the River Ganges to wash away sins in the sacred waters or to cremate their loved ones. It’s a particularly auspicious place to die since expiring here offers moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). Most visitors agree Varanasi is magical – but not for the faint-hearted. Our 5-day Varanasi Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure is filled with sights of traditions and culture that enfold the living and dead. Intimate rituals of life and death take place in public, and the sights, sounds and smells on the ghats – not to mention almost constant attention from touts – can be intense. Still, the so-called “City of Light” may turn out to be your favorite stop on our adventure. Walking the ghats and alleyways or watching the sunrise from a boat will be unforgettable.

Varanasi, also known as Benares (Banāras or Kashi), is on the banks of the River Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, India, 790 km (490 mi) southeast of Delhi. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism, Ravidassia religion and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favorite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva as it has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city in ancient times was known as Kashi or “Shiv ki Nagri”.

NOTE: Varanasi can be a stand-alone photo adventure, but it is meant to be combined with several of our India adventures including Rajasthan’s Golden Triangle, the Pushkar Camel Fair, Kolkata and more. In addition, a private or semi-private Varanasi experience can be added to any of our group photo adventures.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable about how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. We cannot think of a better country to express your creativity than India.

ITINERARY

VARANASI PHOTO TOUR – 5 DAYS

Day 1 | Delhi - Old Delhi

Arrival in Delhi. Whether you are joining us from elsewhere in India, arriving from abroad, or continuing on from one of our other India Photo Adventures, it will be arrival day in Delhi. Airport transfers will be arranged to bring you comfortably to our hotel.

In the afternoon, we’ll venture into the vibrant streets and bustling markets of Old Delhi, where centuries of history, culture, and daily life create endless photographic opportunities. As we explore the lively lanes and colorful bazaars, you’ll get your first taste of the energy and atmosphere that make India such a captivating destination for photographers.

In the evening, we’ll gather for a “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite local restaurants, enjoying delicious Indian cuisine while getting to know our fellow travelers. After dinner, we’ll return to the hotel to rest and prepare for the exciting days ahead as we embark on our journey to the sacred city of Varanasi. (D)

Day 2 | Delhi - Varanasi (Flight) - Sarnath Museum - Aarti Ceremony

After an early breakfast, we’ll transfer to the airport for our flight to Varanasi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the spiritual heart of India. Upon arrival and check-in at our hotel, we’ll visit Sarnath, the sacred Deer Park where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. We’ll also explore the Sarnath Museum, home to an impressive collection of Buddhist artifacts and historical treasures that provide valuable insight into the region’s rich spiritual heritage.

In the afternoon, we’ll immerse ourselves in the fascinating maze of Varanasi’s ancient alleys and bustling streets. Every corner reveals a new scene to photograph, from colorful shops and temples to pilgrims, holy men, and everyday life unfolding against a backdrop of centuries-old architecture. The city’s unique atmosphere offers endless opportunities for storytelling through photography.

As evening approaches, we’ll board a private boat on the Ganges River to witness and photograph the spectacular Ganga Aarti ceremony. This centuries-old ritual takes place along the riverfront ghats, where priests perform synchronized prayers accompanied by incense, fire, chanting, and devotional music. Illuminated by candles, lanterns, and ceremonial lamps, the ceremony creates a mesmerizing visual spectacle and a deeply moving cultural experience. It is one of India’s most iconic spiritual traditions and an experience that will remain with you long after the journey has ended. (B)

Day 3 | Varanasi - River Ganges - Widows of Varanasi

We’ll rise before dawn for a sunrise boat cruise on the sacred River Ganges, one of the most rewarding photographic experiences in Varanasi. As the first light of day illuminates the riverfront ghats, we’ll witness devoted Hindus performing their morning rituals, offering prayers, and bathing in the holy waters. The combination of soft golden light, rising mist, and deeply spiritual traditions creates extraordinary opportunities for photography and visual storytelling. After our cruise, we’ll return to the hotel for breakfast.

Later in the morning, we’ll visit an organization that supports the widows of Varanasi, offering us an opportunity to learn about the social and cultural challenges many of these women face. While Varanasi is renowned for its vibrant spirituality and colorful traditions, it is also home to thousands of widows who have often experienced social exclusion, economic hardship, and limited opportunities. Many seek refuge in charitable organizations and ashrams that provide shelter, community, and support.

For many widows, Varanasi holds profound spiritual significance. As one of Hinduism’s holiest cities and the city most closely associated with Lord Shiva, it is believed by many that dying here can lead to moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Through respectful interaction and observation, we will gain insight into their lives, resilience, and faith while approaching this experience with sensitivity and understanding. This visit offers an opportunity to document meaningful human stories and better understand a complex social issue that remains relevant in contemporary India.

The afternoon and evening will be devoted to further exploration of Varanasi’s fascinating streets, temples, markets, and riverfront neighborhoods. As the day comes to a close, we’ll once again witness one of the city’s spectacular Aarti ceremonies along the banks of the Ganges. This evening, we’ll position ourselves closer to the action, allowing us to photograph the priests as they perform elaborate rituals with ceremonial lamps, incense, and traditional yak-tail fans. The energy, devotion, and dramatic lighting create an unforgettable atmosphere and exceptional photographic opportunities. (B)

Day 4 | Varanasi - Bathing Ghats - Bengali Tola - Sadhus

We’ll begin even earlier than yesterday as our guide will meet us before sunrise for another unforgettable exploration of Varanasi’s riverfront. At this hour, the city is already coming to life as pilgrims, priests, and local residents gather along the banks of the sacred Ganges. The most iconic features of Varanasi are its many ghats—broad stone steps that descend to the river and serve as the setting for countless religious rituals and daily activities. Here, devotees perform their morning prayers, take ritual baths in the holy waters, and gather for ceremonies that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Experiencing the river at dawn, when the ghats are filled with activity and bathed in the soft light of sunrise, is one of the most memorable experiences Varanasi has to offer. As we cruise along the Ganges, our guide will provide insight into the traditions, rituals, and spiritual significance unfolding before us.

After visiting the most important ghats by boat, we’ll continue our exploration on foot through the narrow lanes of Bengali Tola, one of the oldest and most atmospheric neighborhoods in Varanasi. This labyrinth of alleyways is lined with small temples, hidden shrines, traditional shops, and scenes of daily life that reveal the city’s timeless character. Accompanied by our guide, we’ll gain a deeper understanding of the history, culture, and traditions that make Varanasi such a fascinating and complex destination.

Along the way, we’ll arrange several portrait sessions with local sadhus, the Hindu holy men who are among the city’s most recognizable and compelling subjects. Their distinctive appearance, spiritual devotion, and colorful attire provide exceptional opportunities for portrait photography and visual storytelling.

In the evening, we’ll gather for a special “Farewell Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants in Varanasi. Over great food and conversation, we’ll celebrate the experiences, friendships, and photographs created throughout our time in this extraordinary city and bring our journey to a memorable close. (B) (D)

Day 5 | Varanasi - Delhi (Flight)

After breakfast, we’ll transfer to the airport for our flight back to Delhi. From there, you may connect with your international flight home or choose to book a day-use hotel room if you have a later departure and would like time to relax before your onward journey.

As your adventure comes to an end, we hope you leave with not only a remarkable collection of photographs, but also a deeper appreciation for the culture, spirituality, and human stories that make India such an unforgettable destination. (B)

(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion
