Stunning landscapes and a colorful history await you.
Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, it shares a border with England to the south and is bounded by the North Sea to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west. Scotland is world famous for its awesome scenery, vibrant culture and spectacular heritage. In Scotland you’ll find a country that is a fantastic mix of stunning landscapes, wildlife and wonderful local produce, combined with a thriving arts and cultural scene, topped off with a colorful history of epic battles and historic castles. You’ll see the dramatic views and rolling hills of the Scottish Highlands, where we will be using Inverness as our base. We’ll begin in the capital city of Edinburgh – from the heart of the historic Old Town to the waterfront at Leith. We’ll explore the breathtaking “Isle of Skye” and then end our adventure in the historic city of Glasgow. You’ll be privy to sights so unforgettable that you’ll return home from your tour with images you’ll be proud of and excited by, as well as happy memories of your fantastic trip!
This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.
In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our week together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands.

For your convenience, we offer optional early arrival and late departure accommodations so you can extend your stay before or after the trip. In some countries or in remote locations, we may be limited to lodges or branded chain hotels. In Cuba, we stay in upscale family-owned Casas (bread & breakfasts). ITINERARY
SCOTLAND 9 DAYS
Day 1 | Edinburgh
On our first morning, after checking into our hotel, we begin by discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. Followed by lunch and informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques.
After lunch we begin our photo walk and wander the charming streets to see the many sites and shops of Edinburgh’s New Town. Passing through the popular Princes Street, we will walk around the West End and maybe stop in for a quick snack or coffee where J.K. Rowling first thought up the idea for Harry Potter. On the way back to the hotel, there is an optional walk up to the Scott Monument, just a 200ft climb for views of the city.
In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of the local Scottish restaurants. (D)
Day 2 | Edinburgh Castle - Old Town
On day 2, we will set out to explore the Edinburgh Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the Old Town by walking the Royal Mile, and have lunch at one of the many restaurants in the town. There are tons of historical sites to see in this cobblestone- filled village, including local markets, colorful houses, an old graveyard, cathedrals, and even a nice lookout point for great views of the Edinburgh Castle. After this day of exploring Edinburgh, we’ll find a really nice place for dinner. (B)
Day 3 | Inverness
First thing in the morning, we will depart for the Scottish Highlands to our home base for the next two nights in Inverness. If time permits, along the way we can stop to see the Linlithgow Palace and the Ruthven Barracks. Inverness and its neighboring islands and villages are filled with some of Scotland’s most beautiful, picturesque landscapes and wildlife.
We will stop for a quick lunch after settling into the hotel, and then we are off to explore the charming town of Inverness and the Black Isle. After a day of exploring, we will enjoy a group dinner in town. (B)
Day 4 | Chanonry Point - Fairy Glen Falls - Rogie Falls - Ullapool
For the early risers, we offer a spectacular sunrise shoot at the Chanonry Point Lighthouse, just 30 minutes away. If we’re lucky, dolphins are known to frequent this area. On the way back to meet the group, we’ll stop at the Fairy Glen waterfalls and Rogie Falls, where we will learn about photographing moving water.
After meeting back up with the group for breakfast, we will visit the quaint fishing town of Ullapool. Ullapool offers wonderful views of the Loch Broom. We will then continue on to explore the Inverpolly Nature Reserve to see glacial lochs , the beautiful mountains, such as Cul Mor and Stac Pollaidh and the Castle Ardvreck. (B)
Day 5 | Isle of Skye - Portree
After breakfast we will depart from Inverness for our drive north to the Isle of Skye. The Isle, connected to Scotland’s northwest coast by bridge, is known for its rugged landscapes, picturesque fishing villages and medieval castles. The largest island in the Inner Hebrides archipelago, it has an indented coastline of peninsulas and narrow lochs, radiating out from a mountainous interior. After settling into our hotel we will discover Portree and capture the sunset and after we’ve finished the session we will dine. (B)
Day 6 | Isle of Skye
Today is our day to completely immerse ourselves in the mythical Skye. The Isle of Skye, named ‘cloud island’ in Old Norse is the second-largest of Scotland’s islands but surely the most beautiful. A jumbled mess of mysterious moors, jagged mountain peaks, deep lochs and towering sea cliffs that has drawn tourists in for centuries… and today makes it Scotland’s biggest tourist destination after Edinburgh.
For the early risers we will start the day with a sunrise in the famous location called The Storr, the location is very close from Portree (10 minutes) but from the parking we have to hike from 30 to 50 minutes, depending on which pictures we take (boots are recommended). After the sunrise shoot, we will drive back to the hotel to meet the rest of the group for breakfast. We will spend the day exploring the famous waterfalls on the south of Skye Isle: Sligachan and Fairy Pools. (B)
Day 7 | Isle of Skye
Today we will start out early again to capture the sunrise from the amazing location of Quiraing (33 minutes from Portree). After the sunrise session we meet the rest of the group in the hotel for breakfast. Our day will be spent exploring several famous locations, such as Lealt Falls, Brothers Point, Kilt Rock, the Fairy Glen and Talisker Beach. Before Talisker beach, there is a famous distillery where we will take a unique distillery tour. In the evening we will relax for dinner before shooting the sunset. (B)
Day 8 | Glasgow
Today we depart the Skye Isle and head south to Glasgow. Glasgow sits just west of Edinburgh, and is Scotland’s most populous city. This port city on the River Clyde in Scotland’s western Lowlands is famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city’s 18th–20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding. Today it’s a national cultural hub, home to institutions including the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland, as well as acclaimed museums and a thriving music scene.
After a day exploring this wonderful city, we head out to our “Farewell Dinner”, where we will have great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)
Day 9 | Glasgow
On our last morning, we will enjoy breakfast while reviewing our past week’s photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell. Edinburgh airport is one hour from Glasgow. You can depart from either to return home.
We encourage you to extend your stay in Scotland and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)
Add our 7-Day Ireland adventure for 16 days of culture and photography.
(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion
