PROVENCE

Moorish Architecture, castles, mosques, flamenco dancing and white sand beaches.

Our 7-Day Andalusia Photo Tour & Cultural Adventure is a dream come true for any travel photographer looking for nature, architecture, landscapes, seascapes, people and more. This large autonomous region of hills, rivers, and farmland bordering Spain’s southern coast, is breathtaking in so many ways. It was under Moorish rule from the 8th-15th centuries, a legacy that shows in its stunning architecture, including such landmarks as the Alcázar castle in Seville, the capital city, as well as Córdoba’s Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral and Granada’s Alhambra palace.

The Costa del Sol – from posh Puerto Banús to the port of Málaga – forms a near-continuous beachfront strip along the Mediterranean. Inland are the whitewashed mountain villages of Las Alpujarras in the Sierra Nevada, and Jerez de la Frontera, which produces sherry. That fortified wine complements the seafood-based cuisine of Andalusia, which is known as the birthplace of gazpacho.

We’ll be beginning and ending in Seville, and visiting and exploring Jerez, Medina-Sidonia, Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, Marbella, Granada and Cordoba on our 7-day Andalusia photo tour & cultural adventure.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than Andalusia, Spain!

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

ANDALUSIA 7 DAYS

Day 1 | Seville - Plaza de España

We begin our journey through Andalusia in Seville, Spain. After meeting in the lobby of our hotel, we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. From here we will set out for a wonderful day of architectural, people and fine art photography throughout Seville.

Seville is the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region. It’s famous for flamenco dancing, particularly in its Triana neighborhood. Major landmarks include the ornate Alcázar Castle complex, built during the Moorish Almohad dynasty, and the 18th-century Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza bullring. The Gothic Seville Cathedral is the site of Christopher Columbus’s tomb and a minaret turned bell tower, the Giralda. We’ll cover all on days one and two.

In the evening we celebrate with our Welcome Dinner at one of our favorite Spanish restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Seville - Royal Alcázar - Catedral de Sevilla

We set out early to capture Seville as the city awakens. After a morning of street photography we set our sights on The Alcázar of Seville. A royal palace built for the Christian king Peter of Castile. It was built by Castilian Christians on the site of an Abbadid Muslim residential fortress destroyed after the Christian conquest of Seville. Adjacent to the Alcázar is The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, better known as Seville Cathedral. It was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

After lunch we will continue our adventure through the city capturing its amazing Arabic and Spanish architecture. In the evening we will be treated to a flamenco dance while dining. (B)

Day 3 | Jerez - Medina-Sidonia - Parque Los Alcornocales - Marbella

On day three we depart Seville and drive south toward the Mediterranean Sea. Our first stop will be Jerez, more formally known as “Jerez de la Frontera”. Its old quarter surrounds the Alcázar de Jerez, a Moorish fortress founded in the 11th century. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is a famed riding school with horse shows and a carriage museum. The city is also known for flamenco music and sherry production in the so-called Sherry Triangle lying to the west.

Next is a little gem called Medina-Sidonia. An unspoiled, ancient white-washed hilltop town, little-known despite its important history. The town was one of Spain’s most important ducal seats in the 15th century; producing an admiral who led the Spanish Armada against England. The title of Duque de Medina Sidonia was bestowed upon the family of Guzmán El Bueno, of the Tarifa siege, for his valiant role in taking the town. It is considered by some to be the oldest city in Europe, used as a military defense location due to its elevation.

On our way to Marbella, we will drive through the mountains of Parque Natural Los Alcornocales. Once in Marbella, a seaside resort village on the Costa del Sol, we will check into our hotel. We’ll spend the evening taking in the Spanish Riviera. Just west of Marbella is the Golden Mile, consisting of prestigious nightclubs and coastal estates. This leads to Puerto Banús marina, filled with luxury yachts, and surrounded by upscale boutiques, bars and restaurants. (B)

Day 4 | Costa del Sol - Granada

After sunrise and breakfast we will depart for Granada, perhaps one of the best know cities in Southern Spain. En route we’ll hug the coast, better known as the Costa del Sol where we’ll stop to capture some seaside villages. You’ll love this region of Spain.

Granada is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s known for grand examples of medieval architecture dating to the Moorish occupation, especially the Alhambra. This sprawling hilltop fortress complex encompasses royal palaces, serene patios, and reflecting pools from the Nasrid dynasty, as well as the fountains and orchards of the Generalife gardens. We’ll check-in and begin exploring the magnificent city. (B)

Day 5 | Granada - Alhambra - Nasrid Palaces

We are up early so we can enter the Alhambra as it opens. To help put Alhambra in perspective, everyone agrees that the Alhambra in Granada is one of the most magnificent buildings the human race has ever created, so much so that it was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984 by UNESCO. The Alhambra was a palace, a fortress and a citadel; the residence of the Nasrid Sultans and top government officials, court servants and the royal guard. We’ll spend the morning exploring Alhambra and the Nasrid Palaces. Opulent Moorish-style courtyards, reception halls & royal quarters are at the heart of the Alhambra.

There is actually so much to see and photograph in Granada that you could spend almost one week here. So if you like it, you will surely return. (B)

Day 6 | Cordoba - Mosque of Córdoba

We’ll depart right after breakfast for our drive west to Cordoba. Cordoba was an important Roman city and a major Islamic center in the Middle Ages. It’s best known for La Mezquita, an immense mosque dating from 784 A.D., featuring a columned prayer hall and older Byzantine mosaics. After it became a Catholic church in 1236, a Renaissance-style nave was added in the 17th century. Also known as the Great Mosque of Córdoba and the Mezquita, whose ecclesiastical name is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is the Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

We’ll focus on some street photography in the late afternoon hours. After a well-deserved rest, we prepare for our wonderful Spanish Farewell Dinner, with great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Day 7 | Seville

After an early breakfast we depart Cordoba and return to Seville Airport (about 1.5 hours west) where we will bid you farewell. At breakfast we’ll trade contact information and conduct our last photo review.

We urge you to extend your stay in Seville or elsewhere in Spain and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)
