Pastel streets and sweeping panoramas across Portugal.

Join us on this 9-day Portugal Photography Tour and Cultural Adventure as we chase the country’s famous golden light and travel to its most beautiful destinations. Once considered an overlooked gem of the Mediterranean, Portugal is now one of Europe’s most sought-after destinations, known for its lively coastal cities, charming towns, and medieval villages that feel frozen in time.

Our photo adventure begins in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon; a city of cobblestone streets, pastel facades, and a lively yet gritty charm. Wes Anderson-style funiculars and vintage elevators climb steep alleyways, linking the city’s hilltop neighborhoods and offering spectacular panoramic views to photograph. The LX Factory, once part of Lisbon’s industrial past, has transformed into a vibrant creative hub that reflects the city’s spirit of innovation and renewal. It’s a dynamic space filled with artists, makers, and entrepreneurs, creating endless opportunities for engaging people photography.

Porto, Portugal’s second city, has a distinct character, proudly showcasing its traditions of Fado music and Port wine. We will take a day trip to the nearby Douro Valley, a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage wine region with terraced vineyards that cascade down to the winding Douro River. We will also visit charming towns such as Sintra, Évora, and Faro, where whimsical churches, Moorish hilltop castles, grand medieval estates, and sweeping grounds create a setting straight out of a European fairytale.

Aveiro, an hour’s drive south of Porto, is known as the “Venice of Portugal,” owing to its gondola-like moliceiros that glide along curving canals. Lying beside a coastal lagoon teeming with birds, fish, and seaweed (which the town famously farms), Aveiro has an aquatic charm mixed with art nouveau architecture and azulejos (tiles) adorning the buildings’ facades.

Finally, a trip to Portugal wouldn’t be complete without visiting the world-renowned beaches of the Algarve for stunning sunsets and seascapes for our cameras to capture. The Benagil Sea Cave, whose dramatic crater-like opening casts beams of ethereal light into this cathedral of nature, is a must for every Portugal photography portfolio.

This 9-day photography tour is more than just a quest to capture exceptional images; it’s an invitation to elevate your craft and see the world through a new lens. Our expert photographer guide will not only lead you to the most photogenic locations under the best light but also help you master the art of visual storytelling. Along the way, you’ll refine your camera techniques and discover how to navigate the challenges of photographing in a foreign land. You’ll also learn to anticipate a scene before capturing the decisive moment, elevating ordinary photos into extraordinary works of art.

Join us for engaging discussions, lasting camaraderie, and moments of true inspiration. Portugal’s golden light, storybook architecture, and vibrant vineyards will spark your creativity and awaken your senses. Your photographic journey begins here.

ITINERARY

PORTUGAL PHOTO TOUR – 9 DAYS

Day 1 | Lisbon

We’ll meet in the morning at our hotel in Lisbon. We will start the day off discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “The Art of Seeing” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what the guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles, and techniques. From here, we will set out for a day of photography throughout this amazing colorful port town. You will come across all sorts of sights as you walk through the winding alleys of one of the oldest cities in the world.

In the evening, we will celebrate the groups’ arrival with a “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Portuguese restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Lisbon

We’ll rise early for some low-light photography of Lisbon. We’ll explore several of the city’s neighborhoods. There is a lot to see and capture in Lisbon, but it is also a difficult city to navigate because of the up and down nature of its seven hills. We will use local transportation to transfer from one neighborhood to another.

After lunch, we’ll check out the colorful and fun photographic opportunities at Lisbon’s LX Factory. What do you get when you introduce an old strip of factory buildings to restaurants, cafés, and creative minds? You get one of the coolest hangout spots in the city. Lisbon has accepted a role as a technological center and startup headquarters, attracting more entrepreneurs in the process, and the LX Factory is one of many fruitful initiatives.

In the evening, we will take a short trolley car ride to Belém, which boasts two UNESCO World Heritage sites. Both the Jerónimos Monastery (built in 1495) and the Belem Tower (built in 1513) are humbling sites, and photograph very nicely as well. We won’t let you forget to visit Pastéis de Belém, famous for their pastries of the same name, they make for a delicious dessert. And finally, as the sun is about to set, we will shoot the newly created MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology). This will be a wonderful place to wrap up the day before we’ll head back to our hotel. (B)

Day 3 | Lisbon - Sintra - Cascais

We’ll depart early in the morning for Sintra, which is located just outside Lisbon. We will spend the day exploring the amazing castles that seem to be around every corner in this small town. The many retreats, estates, and castles that dot the hills, some dating back to the 8th century, is why Sintra is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

After a wonderful lunch in one of the cafes nearby, we will tour the Moorish Castle that sits atop the highest point in the town. The grounds and the view make for some of the best photographs one could ask for. Sintra will provide us with the perfect opportunity to discuss architecture photography as we’ll travel from one amazing structure to another. As the day goes by, the colorful buildings seem to come to life with the warm evening sun beating against them. They pop out of the lush green hills providing some beautiful contrast in order to photograph this incredible landscape.

Our objective is to give you a taste of Sintra. You could literally spend a week exploring this magical enclave. So, if you fall in love with Sintra, which you very well may do, you will certainly want to return! After Sintra, we will explore the beach community of Cascais. Cascais (kush-kaish) has rocketed from sleepy fishing village to much-loved summertime playground of wave-frolicking lisboêtas ever since King Luís I went for a dip in 1870. Its trio of golden bays attracts sun-worshipping holiday makers, who come to splash in the ice-cold Atlantic. (B)

Day 4 | Lisbon - Évora - The Algarve

After an early breakfast, we’ll depart Lisbon and head south to the Algarve, the stunning southern coast of Portugal. We will drive through beautiful farmland, rolling hills, and charming villages as we’ll head toward some of the most beautiful coastal beaches in the world.

On our way, we will visit the city of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, we’ll explore the Sé de Évora Cathedral and St. Francis Church. Évora is one of Portugal’s most beautifully preserved medieval towns, and an enchanting place to delve into the past. Inside the 14th-century walls, Évora’s narrow, winding lanes lead to striking architectural works: an elaborate medieval cathedral and cloisters; the cinematic columns of the Templo Romano (near the intriguing Roman baths); and a picturesque town square, once the site of some rather gruesome episodes courtesy of the Inquisition. Aside from its historic and aesthetic virtues, Évora is also a lively university town.

Once we’ll arrive in Algarve, we will explore the world renowned Ponta da Piedade cliff and Praia da Rocha beach in Portimão. At sunset, we will attempt to capture that iconic Algarve sunset shot, followed by dinner. The stunning coast of the Algarve is known for its breathtaking cliffs, golden beaches, sea caves, scalloped bays, and sandy islands. But ‘sun, surf, and sand’ is far from the end of the Algarve story; there’s no shortage of photographic opportunities on this breathtaking coast. (B)

Day 5 | The Algarve - Sea Caves - Faro - Carvoeiro

We will be up early to explore the Algarve’s dramatic Sea Caves by boat, including the famous Benagil Sea Cave.

Later, we will drive to Faro, the capital of the Algarve where we will have lunch in the old town. As we’ll wander the cobbled streets, we’ll discover centuries-old architecture, remnants of Roman passages, cozy cafés, and a museum showcasing fascinating archaeological finds. Highlights include Portugal’s oldest horseshoe arch and a beautifully preserved 16th-century convent. Keep an eye out for flower-adorned houses and the winding alleys that lead to the lively shopping lane at the town’s center.

In the evening, we’ll visit Carvoeiro, a small fishing village just a short walk from our hotel. We’ll explore the heart of the town, where brightly colored boats rest against whitewashed houses accented with splashes of color. The town center opens onto a stunning beach framed by towering cliffs on both sides. Just beyond the village lies Algar Seco, a remarkable natural formation where the sea has sculpted grottos, islets, and water chimneys over time. It’s a perfect spot to capture breathtaking landscapes and seascapes, and to spend time photographing the locals and the serene rhythm of Mediterranean life. (B)

Day 6 | The Algarve - Tomar - Aveiro - Porto

On day six, we’ll leave early for our drive to Porto in northern Portugal. Along the way, we will make a brief stop at Tomar before arriving in Aveiro. Enchanting and brimming with fascinating history, Tomar makes for a great stop while exploring Portugal. Located in the center of the country, it is surrounded by forests, fields, and other charming rural towns, and although it’s a sleepy town at first glance, there is plenty to see and photograph in this incredibly pretty town with epic architecture.

Next, we’ll head to Aveiro. Hugging the edge of the Ria, a shallow coastal lagoon rich in birdlife, Aveiro (uhvey-roo), whose name might come from the Latin aviarium (place of birds), is a prosperous town with a youthful, energetic buzz. It’s occasionally dubbed the “Venice of Portugal” thanks to its high-prowed boats, humpbacked bridges, and small network of picturesque canals. We’ll explore by foot or aboard a moliceiro; the traditional seaweed-harvesting boat now converted to tourist use.

Upon our arrival in Porto, we will check in to our hotel and we will turn our focus on the old city and all the spectacular sites it has to offer. Located between the mouth of the Douro River and the Atlantic Ocean. Porto is one of Europe’s oldest urban centers and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. (B)

Day 7 | Porto

Today, we’ll immerse ourselves in Porto; saving the best for last. As we’ll explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods and wander through its ancient streets, we’ll encounter magnificent examples of baroque architecture showcased in its buildings and churches. Throughout the day, we’ll focus on street, people, cityscape, and architectural photography, along with long-exposure techniques using ND filters.

While walking around, we will have a wonderful time photographing the people, culture, and sites of one of Europe’s oldest cities. Photographing this port city at sunset and twilight is best done from the banks of the Douro River. For this you will need your tripods and ND filters. Here, we will focus on the old town. (B)

Day 8 | Porto - Douro Valley

Today, we’ll depart Porto for a day trip to one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions (since 1756). The Douro Valley showcases steep terrace vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, and whitewashed Quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw in visitors from around the world. We’ll be tasting the ports and wines, traveling winding scenic roads, visiting postcard-pretty villages, and enjoying excellent regional restaurants.

Upon our return to Porto, we will freshen up at our hotel, and return to the banks of the Douro River for a wonderful “Farewell Dinner” at one of our favorite Portuguese restaurants. (B) (D)

Day 9 | Porto - Lisbon

On day nine, we will have our final group discussion, review our past week’s photos, trade contact information, and say goodbye, as we’ll head back to Lisbon. NOTE: If you are departing from Porto we will bid you farewell in Porto.

We urge you to extend your stay and practice all the photography skills you have learned over the nine days in other towns in Portugal or throughout Europe! (B)
