ISTANBUL

TURKEY

From Byzantine to Baroque in the beautiful city of Istanbul.

Join us on a 6-day Istanbul photography tour and cultural adventure. Experience this modern metropolis with nearly 3000 years of history, from Roman ruins to Byzantine marvels, Ottoman treasures, and modern amusements. Wander through sweeping palace grounds and grand mosques, explore bustling bazaars, and experience traditional Turkish baths in a fascinating city that culturally, geographically, and historically bridges two continents.

During our photo trip, we will visit awe-inspiring palaces and mosques in the city. One of the most spectacular sights will be the Ottoman-era Dolmabahçe Palace. This opulent palace boasts one of the largest chandeliers in the world, winding crystal staircases, and rolling red carpets. Every inch of the place is adorned with gold – with the ceiling alone gilded with 14 tonnes of the precious metal.

The Topkapi Palace is a great example of the meeting of East and West. As you walk through its impressive gates, you’ll see two turrets jutting out of this fairytale fortress. Inside, you’ll find intricate mosaics, Arabic inscriptions and calligraphy, and a hidden harem for the royal sultan. One of the most photogenic sites in Istanbul is the Blue Mosque, named for its 20,000 Iznik tiles in varying shades of blue that dazzle in the light. It’s like a sapphire version of Oz’s Wizard of Oz’s emerald palace on the city’s skyline.

One of Istanbul’s most renowned features is its impressive markets, which are perfect for street and people photography. Grand Bazaar, considered one of the world’s first-ever shopping malls, is a vast covered market that spans over 30,000 square meters. It contains thousands of stalls selling a wide range of goods, from carpets to ceramics, lanterns, and Turkish teas. Visitors can witness shopkeepers and customers haggling over both old and new treasures. The Egyptian Bazaar, also known as the Spice Bazaar, is named for its endless displays of multicolored pyramids of powdered spices and dried Istanbul Turkish delights.

After we’ve explored the bustling streets of modern Istanbul, we will descend into the depths of the 6th-century underground reservoir, the Basilica Cistern. As we tiptoe through the echoing chambers, this will be the perfect place to play with the eerie lighting and the rippling, watery reflections below. Within the fish-inhabited waters, slender marble columns rise, some engraved with Medusa heads, adding an ominous and mythical air to this aquatic underworld.

This 6-day photography tour is more than just a quest to capture exceptional images; it’s an invitation to elevate your craft and see the world through a new lens. Our expert photographer guides will not only lead you to the most photogenic locations under the best light but also help you master the art of visual storytelling. Along the way, you’ll refine your camera techniques and discover how to navigate the challenges of photographing in a foreign land. You’ll also learn to anticipate a scene before capturing the decisive moment, elevating ordinary photos into extraordinary works of art.

Join us for engaging discussions, meaningful connections, and inspiring moments. Istanbul, a city of grandeur, vastness, and rich history, will leave a lasting impression in your mind and on camera. Your photographic journey begins here!

ITINERARY

ISTANBUL “SOUL OF THE STREETS” – 6 DAYS

Day 1 | Spice Bazaar - Dolmabahçe Palace - Beylerbeyi Palace

After checking into our hotel, we’ll begin with an introduction to PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography,” along with our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic approach. This will be followed by lunch and an informal discussion about what each guest hopes to achieve with their photography—the subjects that inspire them, along with their styles and techniques.

After lunch, we’ll begin our photo walk through this magnificent and magical city, home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites. We’ll explore the Spice Bazaar, where the scent of hundreds of spices fills the air, and then embark on a cruise along the Bosphorus. Along the way, we’ll view the Dolmabahçe Palace and the Beylerbeyi Palace, a 19th-century residence on the Asian side of Istanbul.

In the evening, we will celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Istanbul restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Blue Mosque - Topkapi Palace - Grand Bazaar

We’ll begin the day before sunrise with a walk through Sultanahmet. After breakfast, we’ll visit the remarkable Blue Mosque, whose interior walls are adorned with more than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles. We’ll then explore the magnificent Topkapi Palace, once home to the great sultans and filled with extraordinary treasures and antiquities, including a collection of 12,000 pieces of fine Chinese porcelain.

We’ll then enjoy a wonderful lunch at the Konyali Restaurant, set within the gardens of Topkapi Palace and offering beautiful views of the Marmara Sea and the Asian side of Istanbul. Afterward, we’ll continue our exploration with the Hippodrome and the domed Basilica of St. Sophia, a masterpiece that has inspired architects and religious leaders for more than 1,500 years. We’ll end the day at the Grand Bazaar, first built in 1457. (B)

Day 3 | Beyoğlu - Karaköy (Galata) - Taksim Square

We’ll begin with a brief review of some of your favorite photographs from the tour so far. Then we’ll set out to explore the romance of late Ottoman Istanbul on a walking photo tour of Beyoğlu, including a visit to one of the sultan’s most lavish palaces.

Our walk begins at Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn, which links Old Istanbul with Beyoğlu. From there we’ll take in the view before heading north through Karaköy (Galata) and uphill to the Galata Tower. We’ll continue along İstiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), the lively heart of Beyoğlu—an area developed during the 19th century that reflects a more modern side of Istanbul. Along the way, we’ll also visit Taksim Square, widely considered the center of modern Istanbul.

After lunch, we’ll head downhill to Dolmabahçe Palace. With a façade stretching nearly 400 meters (about a quarter mile), it stands as the grandest of the Ottoman palaces and is a must-see for anyone drawn to true magnificence.

The evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure. We suggest experiencing a traditional Turkish bath—a wonderfully relaxing way to end a full and memorable day. (B)

Day 4 | Black Sea - Şile - Ağva - Maiden’s Tower

We’ll depart Istanbul early in the morning for a day trip to the Black Sea villages of Şile and Ağva. Heading northeast on the Anatolian side, we’ll arrive in Şile, a small fishing town set along the rocky Black Sea coast. Known for its sandy beaches and famous Şile bezi—an open-weave cotton fabric—it makes a perfect first stop.

Once a port of call for ships sailing east from the Bosphorus, Şile offers a relaxed coastal charm. Enjoy a stroll along the fishing harbor or pause for tea at a hilltop café overlooking the Şile Lighthouse. On the way to Ağva, we’ll pass through picturesque traditional Turkish villages such as Kabakoz and Suaybeyli, where time seems to have stood still. Though close to Istanbul in distance, they feel worlds apart in their way of life. Here you may experience the friendliness and curiosity of villagers whose lives remain closely tied to tradition.

Continuing along the coastal route, we arrive in Ağva, surrounded by nature and situated between the Yeşilçay and Göksu rivers that flow into the Black Sea. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a peaceful boat ride along the Göksu River. Set in a landscape lush and green, it’s a chance to take in the quiet beauty that defines this region. After enjoying sweeping views of the sea and surrounding bluffs, we’ll break for lunch, where you may dine on fresh local fish.

Later, you’ll have time to truly unwind in the beauty of the Black Sea coast—either relaxing along the Göksu River or on one of Ağva’s sandy beaches. Surrounded by forest and cliffs, the blue-green waters of the sea invite you to slow down and simply take in the moment.

In the late afternoon, we’ll return to Istanbul and photograph the iconic Maiden Tower at sunset from the Asian side of the city. (B)

Day 5 | Sultanahmet - Basilica Cistern

We’ll begin the morning with a photography discussion and a review of the work created so far. Afterward, we’ll head out to explore several neighborhoods in Old Istanbul, focusing on photojournalism and street photography.

Along the way, we’ll visit the Basilica Cistern—the largest underground reservoir in the city. Constructed in the 6th century, it once supplied water to the Great Palace of Constantinople, Topkapi Palace, and other important structures.

In the evening, we’ll gather for our “Farewell Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants in Istanbul. (B) (D)

Day 6 | Istanbul

While enjoying breakfast, we’ll hold our final group discussion, review photographs from the past week, exchange contact information, and say our farewells before your transfer arrives to take you to the airport.

If you wish, you may also book additional nights with us to extend your stay in Europe or Asia and continue applying the photographic techniques you’ve discovered during this adventure. (B)
