Naples: The Living Theater | Soul of the Streets

Join us on our 6-day Naples Soul of the Streets Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure for a diverse journey through unruly port-city charm and glistening coastal paradise.

Dive deep into the raw, unfiltered heart of Naples on this intensive 6-day street photography workshop. This isn’t a tourist snapshot tour—it’s an immersion in one of the world’s most significant street-shooting arenas, where chaos, character, and profound humanity collide in every frame.

Naples, Italy’s third-largest and most anarchic city, wears its grit proudly: graffiti-splashed walls, laundry fluttering overhead, Vespas roaring through impossibly narrow alleys. But beneath the surface turmoil lies breathtaking beauty—spontaneous gestures, expressive faces, bustling markets, and fleeting moments of pure connection.

We’ll push past the grime to capture the soul of the streets: candid portraits of resilient locals, layered compositions in the historic center, dramatic light in the Quartieri Spagnoli, and the eternal backdrop of Vesuvius framing everyday life.

Our photo adventure will start in the historical center of Naples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts some of Europe’s finest archaeology and art, and its collection of royal palaces and castles makes Rome look positively provincial. We will also wander through the maze-like streets of the Spanish Quarter, characterized by laundry lines that drape between buildings and graffiti-clad walls that add a contemporary twist to its historic backdrop. These narrow alleyways, as well as the city’s numerous piazzas, provide excellent opportunities to capture passionate Neapolitans going about their daily routines and engaging in animated conversations at outdoor cafes.

Midway through our odyssey, we escape the city’s frantic energy for a day on the enchanting island of Procida. Far from the polished glamor of its neighbors, Procida is a photographer’s dream of candy-colored houses and sun-bleached fishing boats. We will focus our lenses on Marina Corricella, an amphitheater of pastel architecture that reflects perfectly in the shimmering Tyrrhenian Sea. From the heights of Terra Murata, we will capture panoramic shots of this “Island of Color” before descending into its car-free streets to document the slow, rhythmic life of local fishermen as they mend their nets.

ITINERARY

NAPLES SOUL OF THE STREETS – 6 DAYS

Day 1 | Historic Naples

We meet in Naples at our beautiful hotel, centrally located near the port in historic Naples. Naples was founded between the 7th and 6th centuries B.C. by the Greeks; the port was named Neapolis, which means “New City”. The historic center of Naples is declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has one of the most significant historical city centers in the world. It prides itself on the 448 historical and monumental churches, the highest number in the world for a single city.

We begin by discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions about what the guests are trying to achieve with their photography, including subject matter, styles, and techniques. From here, we will set out for a fantastic day of photography throughout Naples’ historic district. In the evening, we celebrate our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Neapolitan restaurants. WARNING: Be prepared to gain 5-10 lbs on this trip. (D)

Day 2 | Spanish Quarter - Castel dell’Ovo - Piazza del Plebiscito

On day two we carefully explore Naples historic Spanish Quarter as well as some of the other neighborhoods of Naples. This will give us the opportunity to photograph the grit of Naples and its colorful street people and shop owners. In the afternoon we will visit the Castel dell’Ovo (Egg Castle), dating back to 117 BC. Considered the oldest of Naples Castles, Castel dell’Ovo juts out into the bay on the tiny isle of Megaride. The same island where Siren Partenope washed ashore after plunging herself into the sea because she failed to lure Ulysses. The same siren that gave Naples its first name, Partenope.

Legend has it that a Roman poet named Virgil placed an egg into a glass jar, the jar into a metal cage and hid it beneath the castle. As long as the egg remained safe and intact, the city would too. The only flaw with this myth, of course, is that Virgil lived long before Castel dell’Ovo was actually a castle. In the evening we will set out to photograph the late setting sun in the Piazza del Plebiscito with the Basilica Reale San Francesco di Paola in the background. This always makes for stunning photos and a great long exposure opportunity. (B)

Day 3 | Procida - Naples

Today we depart Naples harbor by hydroplane ferry for the volcanic isle of Procida in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, about 25 km from the city of Naples. We spend the day applying our skills to the many photographic opportunities on this dramatic island including its wonderfully colorful and iconic harbor.

In the late afternoon, we return to Naples where we’ll rest up. In the evening we will further explore Naples at night and enjoy Naples world famous pizza and gelato. (B)

Day 4 | Naples

After an early morning breakfast, we will explore Naples’ Metro Lines 1 and 6, which are essentially underground galleries. For street photography, the “street” is just 30 meters underground.

In the afternoon, we will take the funicular up to Castel Sant’Elmo for a sunset view overlooking Naples. (B)

Day 5 | Naples

If the Spanish Quarters are the beating heart of old Naples, the Centro Direzionale is its cold, geometric fever dream. Designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, this “city within a city” feels like a Ridley Scott film set dropped into the Mediterranean.

In the afternoon, we’ll navigate a labyrinth of narrow alleys where old-school garages and scooter workshops spill out onto the cobblestones. It’s a masterclass in light and shadow—perfect for capturing the raw, cinematic pulse of Neapolitan daily life

Here we will enjoy our “Farewell Dinner”. After we return to Amalfi for a well-deserved rest. (B) (D)

Day 6 | Naples

On our final day, we are up early for some morning photography (optional because you may be tired). After we return to the hotel for breakfast, our final group discussion, review our photos, and trade contact information.

We urge you to extend your stay on the Amalfi Coast or elsewhere in Italy and make good use of all the wonderful photographic techniques you will learn on our amazing photo adventure. (B)

(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion
