LONDON “SOUL OF THE STREETS”

Camden Town, Piccadilly Circus, Shoreditch, Soho, Barbican, and more

London will enthral you, seduce you, and guarantee you a groovy time.

Our London 6-day “Soul of the Streets” Photography Workshop forms part of our Soul of the Streets series, and is designed specifically for street photographers from beginners to advanced amateurs. Our small group sizes ensure you receive quality, individual instruction while remaining as unobtrusive as possible on the streets, helping increase your success in achieving your photographic goals. Throughout the workshop, you’ll be guided by a professional photographer with an intimate knowledge of London and a deep understanding of how street photography is perceived and practiced across the city.

Unlike many other genres of photography, street photography is about exploring urban environments where large numbers of people gather, searching for the moments that reveal the joy, stress, and sometimes the struggle of everyday life. Becoming aware of your surroundings, and learning to anticipate where a compelling scene might unfold, is an essential part of the process. Creating a strong composition where light, timing, and subject come together means your skills as a photographer will constantly be challenged.

Street photography can be demanding and, at times, frustrating. Yet when all the elements align, when small stories unfold naturally and you capture them in a fraction of a second, the experience becomes incredibly rewarding, even addictive. Throughout the workshop, we’ll encourage you to develop a critical eye and cultivate a mindset that relies on awareness, speed, subtlety, and a confident understanding of your camera settings.

London’s multicultural society offers remarkable variety. The contrasts between neighborhoods can feel so distinct that it sometimes seems as if you’ve stepped into another world simply by crossing a few streets. This diversity makes London a particularly compelling destination for street photographers. As we explore different districts, we’ll photograph areas with high pedestrian activity while also seeking quieter moments that allow for minimalist compositions, where a single figure interacts with space and light. Iconic backdrops will also play an important role in shaping our images. As the capital of a city whose history stretches back to Roman times, London provides an extraordinary historical setting for photography.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to some of the city’s most photogenic locations carefully chosen for the best lighting conditions, but also to help you develop the ability to visualize a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our goal is to heighten your awareness and inspire your creativity so you return home with images you’re proud of, along with skills that continue to elevate your photography long after the workshop ends. Beyond learning camera settings and technical fundamentals, you’ll discover how creativity can transform an ordinary scene into an extraordinary photograph.

You’ll also gain insight into how to read a location, approach your surroundings with confidence, and photograph people within their cultural context. We’ll discuss the considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign environment while embracing the opportunities it presents. Our time together will include individual guidance, group discussions, and plenty of shared inspiration and enjoyment. It’s difficult to imagine a better place to explore your creativity than the vibrant, ever-changing streets of London.

The workshop can be enjoyed on its own or combined with our other European street photography destinations, giving guests the option to extend their experience and continue developing their craft beyond London.

Unlike other genres of photography, street photography is all about exploring urban environments where a high traffic of people congregate, searching for the joy, stress, and even pain of everyday life. Becoming aware of our surroundings, while being able to predict a scene where our subject will be located is just part of the process. Creating a strong composition, where beautiful lighting and precise timing come together means that your skills as a photographer will be challenged to their limits.

As challenging and often frustrating as street photography can be, the rewards when all the little stories unfold and come together perfectly, then captured in the blink of an eye, can be utterly addictive. We will teach you to become your own most hardened critic, and learn to develop a mindset of using speed, stealth and an intimate knowledge of your camera settings.

Proudly boasting a multicultural society, the contrast amongst the classes is so varied, you would be forgiven for thinking you crossed into another timezone when passing from one neighborhood to the next. And it is this variety of cultures that makes London as a destination for street photographers so compelling. We will wander the various districts, picking out our subjects from areas with a high traffic of pedestrians, as well as creating minimalist-type shots of individuals incorporating negative space. The use of iconic backgrounds also plays an important part of our shooting experience. Being the capital of an empire that stretches back to Roman times, London has an incredibly rich history.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the dynamic city of London.

Designed to run individually or back-to-back with our other European Street Photography destinations, our guests have the option of extending their experience in street photography beyond London.

ITINERARY

LONDON “SOUL OF THE STREETS” – 6 DAYS

Day 1 | Camden Town - Regent Street - Oxford Street - Piccadilly Circus

We’ll meet at our hotel and, after some informal introductions, head out for a pleasant first day of photography. Our journey begins in Camden Town, one of the most vibrant areas for street photography in London. Here, you’ll encounter an incredible mix of cultures and subcultures—punks, rockers, hippies, mods, and just about every style imaginable. Camden’s energy and diversity unfold along the picturesque canal that runs through the neighborhood. We’ll spend the morning exploring the area and photographing a wide range of subjects, from architecture and candid street scenes to environmental portraits and everyday life.

After lunch, we’ll gather to discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” along with our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic approach. Later in the afternoon, we’ll head toward Piccadilly Circus; London’s answer to Times Square. As the intersection of several major roads and a major destination for shoppers, performers, and visitors, it offers a constant flow of pedestrians that creates endless possibilities for street photography. Even the entrances to the London Underground provide compelling scenes, where shooting up stairways as people emerge into the light can produce striking compositions.

Throughout the day, you’ll have opportunities to incorporate some of London’s most iconic elements into your images—red buses, classic telephone boxes, and historic post boxes. Creative perspectives through bus windows, reflections in glass, and candid moments of passengers can all add to the visual drama of this fast-moving city. Piccadilly Circus in particular is an excellent place to use color as a compositional element, and with more than 100 million visitors each year, the chances of capturing the right subject at the perfect moment are high.

One of the main streets branching off from Piccadilly Circus is Regent Street. With its elegant curve and rows of luxury designer shops, it has long been a favorite destination for fashionable shoppers and the city’s elite. It’s also home to the world’s oldest toy store—Hamleys, which has been delighting visitors since 1760 and is renowned for its elaborate window displays. Continuing on, we’ll arrive at Oxford Street, the main shopping thoroughfare of central London. With thousands of pedestrians passing through each day, the area offers a wealth of photographic opportunities. Oxford Street can be revisited at different times of day, with changing light that ranges from soft overcast conditions ideal for portraits to dramatic directional light creating bold contrasts and saturated color.

To conclude our first day together, we’ll gather for our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite hidden local restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Columbia Road - Shoreditch - Brick Lane - Tower Hamlets

Our second day will begin at one of London’s most vibrant and diverse districts—Shoreditch. Every Sunday, locals gather at the lively Columbia Road Flower Market in East London. Amid the brilliant displays of color and the animated calls of traders with unmistakable Cockney accents, the market offers wonderful opportunities to photograph both atmosphere and character. The long history of Columbia Road has fostered a close-knit community known for its warmth and friendliness, making it an enjoyable and engaging place to photograph.

Sunday is the main trading day for many of London’s markets, and the East End is home to some of the best locations for street photography. The famous Spitalfields Market is far more than just a place to shop. Here, you’ll find antique dealers, food vendors, independent fashion designers, and countless unique stalls, creating a lively and constantly changing environment for photography. Nearby lies Brick Lane, an area that has undergone remarkable transformation over the past 15 years.

Brick Lane is especially known for its extraordinary street art—some of the finest found anywhere in Europe. For photographers, the striking murals and textured urban backdrops create perfect settings for isolating subjects within bold compositions. This area falls within Tower Hamlets, one of the most culturally diverse boroughs in Europe, adding another layer of richness to the scenes we’ll encounter. While street photography will be our primary focus, the neighborhood offers endless subjects beyond candid portraits.

Later in the evening, we’ll experiment with techniques that introduce motion into our images. Using panning methods and slower shutter speeds, we’ll isolate moving subjects and create a sense of drama in low-light conditions. Photographing during blue hour, with the glow of street lighting illuminating the streets, provides a beautiful way to conclude our day exploring this remarkable city. (B)

Day 3 | Tower Bridge - Borough Market - Southbank - Tate Modern

On the morning of our third day, we’ll head across the iconic Tower Bridge. One of the most recognizable structures in the world, it was designed during the reign of Queen Victoria to complement the architectural style of the nearby Tower of London. The bridge offers wonderful photographic opportunities, particularly when pedestrians cross between the city and the South Bank. On foggy mornings, the glowing lights and drifting mist can create an especially atmospheric scene. From here, we’ll also enjoy excellent views of the London skyline, including the towering presence of the Shard. No visit to London would be complete without photographing Tower Bridge overlooking the River Thames. The nearby Tower of London, with more than 900 years of history, has served as a royal palace, a prison, and even a place of execution.

After crossing the bridge toward South Bank, we’ll arrive at the lively Borough Market. One of the oldest markets in London, it remains a thriving retail and wholesale food market today. This wonderfully photogenic location has even appeared in films such as Harry Potter, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The vendors themselves often make excellent subjects for environmental portraits, especially in the soft, diffused light that fills the market’s covered spaces. With its layered textures, interesting layouts, and atmospheric brick architecture, Borough Market provides a perfect setting to practice a variety of street photography techniques.

Continuing on, we’ll explore the streets around King’s College and Guy’s Campus. This area offers a chance to photograph London’s younger generation and the natural interactions between friends, while incorporating striking architectural backdrops. Reflections in puddles or glass surfaces can add another creative dimension to our compositions.

We’ll then spend time along the vibrant South Bank, one of the cultural and creative centers of the city. Here, we’ll visit the Tate Modern—one of our favorite locations thanks to its dramatic architecture, strong lines, reflections, and beautiful directional lighting. Instead of focusing on crowds, we’ll often aim to isolate individuals within the space, predicting movement and composing minimalist images that make use of negative space. Nearby, we’ll also visit the South Bank Skatepark, where skateboarders practicing tricks amid graffiti-covered walls create energetic scenes full of motion and character.

As the day draws to a close, we’ll make our way to Millennium Bridge to photograph pedestrians crossing during blue hour. A favorite spot for photographers, the bridge’s railings form striking leading lines that guide the eye toward St. Paul’s Cathedral in the distance. Using a small table tripod or simply placing the camera on the ground, we can capture the motion of passing pedestrians with slower shutter speeds, adding an artistic sense of movement to the scene. Photographing Millennium Bridge at this magical time of day provides a fitting conclusion to a day filled with some of London’s most iconic locations. (B)

Day 4 | Trafalgar Square - Covent Garden - Carnaby Street - Soho

On day four, we’ll explore some of the striking architecture that London is known for. Beginning at Trafalgar Square, we’ll work on compositions that incorporate the art of layering—one of the most effective, yet challenging, techniques in photography. From the wide open spaces of the square, we’ll move toward the charming, narrow streets of Covent Garden, where colorful storefronts and the vibrant courtyard of Neal’s Yard offer countless photographic opportunities. Covent Garden is also one of our favorite places for its excellent food, making it the perfect spot to pause for lunch.

Continuing on, we’ll arrive at the ever-fashionable Carnaby Street. Known for its long history of attracting the unusual and eclectic, Carnaby Street became famous during the 1980s for the bold styles and dramatic hairstyles of the punk era. Today it is more commercial, yet it still retains much of its distinctive character. Colorful façades line the street, creating wonderful backdrops as shoppers move through the scene. Alongside iconic brands, many independent boutiques draw a unique clientele, offering interesting subjects for photography—much like nearby Soho, the West End’s historic red-light district.

Soho often rewards the street photographer with compelling contrasts. Its gritty past sits alongside everyday life, creating scenes where ordinary moments unfold against a backdrop known for its more provocative history. Just a short walk away lies Chinatown, where vivid colors, glowing lanterns, and reflections in shop windows create images rich with depth and atmosphere. With its lively streets and photogenic settings, Chinatown is an excellent location for environmental portraits.

In the evening, we’ll gather for a mid-week review of some of our favorite images captured so far. Through a group critique, we’ll explore what makes certain images stand out and discuss editing techniques that can help refine and strengthen the final photograph. (B)

Day 5 | British Museum - Barbican - Whitechapel Market - Square Mile

On the morning of day five, we’ll begin at the British Museum. This remarkable institution is not only a dream for architectural photographers but also home to some of the world’s most extraordinary artifacts, spanning human history from prehistoric times to the modern era. Among its many treasures are the Rosetta Stone and mummies from ancient Egypt. For photographers, however, it is the building itself that often steals the show. The dramatic glass roof floods the interior with natural light, creating a beautifully balanced environment for photographing people within the space. With its clean lines and strong contrasts, the British Museum is especially appealing for those who enjoy working in black and white.

Continuing our day, we’ll head to another favorite location—the Barbican. One of the finest examples of Brutalist architecture in London, the Barbican offers endless possibilities for studying light, lines, and geometric form. When a subject is placed carefully within this environment, the results can be powerful and visually striking. The combination of directional light, repeating shapes, and strong leading lines makes it a location that street photographers can revisit again and again. Unlike many inner-city residential areas, the Barbican often calls for wide-angle lenses to fully capture its expansive spaces and dramatic architectural scale.

Later, we’ll make our way to Whitechapel Market—an excellent place to experience the authentic spirit of London’s East End. This working-class neighborhood has a rich and diverse cultural history, and the market sits right at its heart. Here, everyday life unfolds among a tightly connected community, offering a wide range of candid photographic moments. It’s also a wonderful place to experiment with different camera techniques while photographing people from a variety of backgrounds. Experiences like this help build confidence, expand your creative approach, and add valuable tools to your photographic repertoire.

Toward the end of the day, as workers begin heading home, we’ll move into the Square Mile—the historic heart of London’s financial district. This area provides a fascinating contrast, with sharply dressed professionals, iconic black taxis, and the city’s striking office towers creating a fast-paced urban atmosphere. With large numbers of pedestrians passing through at this hour, the light often helps subjects stand out against darker backgrounds. Shooting from a low angle and incorporating the surrounding office buildings can produce bold, dynamic compositions that capture the energy of the financial district.

In the evening, we’ll gather for our “Farewell Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants in London. It’s a time to celebrate the journey, share stories, and reflect on the many memorable moments from our days photographing the city together. (B)(D)

Day 6 | Westminster

On our final day, we’ll wander through some of London’s most famous streets and landmarks. Beginning along the Embankment, the pleasant pedestrian walkway beside the River Thames, we’ll practice panning shots of joggers and cyclists as they move through the scene. Nearby, the iconic Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament glow beautifully in the early morning light. Westminster Bridge also offers excellent opportunities to photograph pedestrians crossing the Thames with these historic landmarks as a backdrop.

Our walk will then take us toward St. James’s Square, a tranquil green space surrounded by elegant buildings, luxury boutiques, high-end restaurants, and distinguished hotels.

No visit to London would be complete without enjoying one of Britain’s most beloved meals—fish and chips. We’ll gather for lunch at one of our favorite restaurants, where we’ll reflect on the experiences of the past week, share stories from our photographic adventures, exchange contact information, and finally bid one another farewell.
