Explore Roman, Greek and Venetian architecture along the Adriatic.
Our 9-day Croatia Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure is a wonderful combination of the must-visit cities, coastal villages and National Parks in Croatia. Our journey will take us through Zagreb, Šibenik, Split, and Dubrovnik. Zagreb is the capital and the cultural, administrative, educational and political center of Croatia. A cosmopolitan city with a great nightlife, and many architectural and street photography opportunities.
As we head south into Dalmatia we will explore two breathtaking National Parks, Plitvice Lakes (UNESCO) and Krka. Their beauty will make you speechless. Šibenik is a 1000-year-old Roman city that was under Hungarian-Croat rule in the 12th century, followed by almost 400 years of Venetian rule, ending in 1797. The old town of Trogir, which stands intact from the days when it was built, will remain in your fond memory as one of the most memorable destinations of our photo trip. And if time and weather allow, on day six, we will travel by ferry to the magical island of Hvar. This island is perfect for capturing the true essence of our Croatia 9 days Photo Tour. After a few days exploring Split and Diocletian’s Palace (UNESCO), a 30,000 square meter, 1700-year-old Roman palace, we head south to Dubrovnik for our final days.
Our Croatia 9 Days Photo tour is designed not only to guide you to the most photographed locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your new-found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary photo into an extraordinary photo by using your own creativity.
In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region, and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the fascinating country of Croatia!

ITINERARY
CROATIA 9 DAY PHOTO TOUR
Day 1 | Zagreb
We meet at our Hotel in Zagreb where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. We spend the afternoon photographing the streets and people of Zagreb, a wonderful mix of Balkan and Austrian flavors. During our evening walk we can feel the romantic atmosphere of the Upper Town, which has been lighted by 214 gas lanterns for the past 150 years. After we will celebrate the groups arrival with a Welcome Dinner at one of our favorite Croatian restaurants. (D)
Day 2 | Zagreb
After breakfast, we will visit the complex of Cathedral of The Assumption of Virgin Mary and the Archbishop’s palace. We continue to the Dolac Market, the central Zagreb market. Then we will take you for a coffee, at the famous Tkalčićeva street, to show you what a local coffee culture means. After a few more photos of the baroque Upper Town where there is a Parliament building, Croatian government, and Old City Hall, we will go downtown by funicular – one of the smallest in the world. Downtown was designed during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and it’s the reason why Zagreb is called ” small Vienna”. In the afternoon we will visit the famous open art gallery “The Cemetery of Mirogoj”. (B)
Day 3 | Plitvice Lakes National Park - Šibenik
We check out early in the morning and drive to Plitvice Lakes, which is the biggest and the most famous national park in Croatia. The lakes were accepted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The waters flowing over the limestone and chalk have, over thousands of years, deposited travertine barriers, creating natural dams which in turn have created a series of beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. These geological processes continue today. The forests in the park are home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species. There we will walk along forest paths and across little wooden bridges and take a boat ride through the Kozjak lake. We will take pictures of memorable landscapes and turquoise waters. Later in the evening, we will be checking into our hotel in Šibenik. (B)
Day 4 | Krka National Park
In the morning we will depart for Krka National Park, where we will visit the Roski waterfall, which is surrounded by beautiful nature and cascading waterfalls. Here you can photograph nature in all its magnificence. Then we visit a small village with water mills that were used for the production of flour, washing clothes, etc. After that, we will visit the island Visovac in the lake created by the Krka river, where there is a Franciscan monastery, which dates from 1445. Beautiful landscapes, old mills and, the winding river Krka will give us excellent conditions for photography and the possibility of stunning panoramic photos. (B)
Day 5 | Šibenik - Primosten - Trogir - Adriatic Coast - Split
On day five, we checkout of our hotel and we head to Šibenik, one of the oldest and most beautiful Croatian cities. A 1000-year-old town, historical and cultural monument with well-preserved fortresses and ramparts from the past, it will leave you breathless. The monumental St. James Cathedral, built over more than a century, is included in the World Cultural Heritage protected by UNESCO. After Šibenik we drive the Dalmatian coast stopping first at Primosten before arriving in Trogir. Beautiful Trogir carries the title of the most preserved romanesque-gothic town in Central Europe, and why UNESCO listed it in its World Heritage List. After Trogir, we arrive at our hotel in Split. (B)
Day 6 | Isle of Hvar
On day six, we depart early by ferry for the isle of Hvar, the longest and the sunniest island in the Adriatic sea. Along the way, we pass the beautiful Adriatic islands of Solta and Brac. Voted one of the most beautiful islands in the world, Hvar is famous for its unspoiled landscape, rich cultural heritage and as Croatia’s trendiest resort of the jet-set. We stop in the town of Hvar and explore the Hvar Cathedral, Spanish fortress, the Arsenal and the Theatre. In 1612 the oldest civic theatre in Europe was founded in the town of Hvar and is active to this day. Before going back, you should not forget a unique Hvar souvenir – handmade agave lace patterns, unique works of art by the Benedictine nuns, a part of the island’s UNESCO heritage. (B)
*Alternate schedule if the weather does not permit the Hvar ferry to run.
After breakfast, we will head towards the small Mediterranean town of Omiš, which is located at the mouth of the river Cetina. Omiš was well known in the past by the Corsairs of Almissa whose Sagittas (ships) brought fame to them. With its rich cultural heritage, Omiš gives us a view into the past with many cultural monuments, such as the pre-Romanesque Church of St. Peter, Mirabella Fortress from the 13th century, and the remains of the city walls and towers. After lunch, we will visit Belvedere, and admire and photograph the works of the world-famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.
Day 7 | Split - Diocletian's Palace - Dubrovnik
In the morning we will visit more of the old city and the Split fish market. We will stroll along Split’s stunning Riva promenade and explore the amazing Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to photograph St. Duje Cathedral, Peristil, The Golden gate, Statue of Gregory of Nin, City clock and so much more. In the afternoon, we drive to the south of Croatia, stopping in Neretva valley along the way before arriving in Dubrovnik. (B)
Day 8 | Dubrovnik
On day eight, we dive right in with an early morning walk along the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, from one end to the other, offering us spectacular views of the city, the sea, the islands and the mountains that watch over this magnificent fortress. Dubrovnik has been described as a jewel encased by city walls and, beyond them, by the unbroken blue of the sea. Here we will concentrate on people, seascape and architecture photography. In the late afternoon we will explore the inner streets of the city, getting to know the city better. In the evening we will visit the harbor, armed with our tripods, and experiment with low-light and sunset photography. Finally, we celebrate Croatia with our Farewell Dinner at one of our favorite Dubrovnik restaurants. (B) (D)
Day 9 | Dubrovnik
While enjoying a late breakfast we conduct our final group discussion, review our photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in Croatia and make good use of everything you learned on our Photo Workshop Adventure. (B)
This adventure is followed by our Dubrovnik-Montenegro Photo Adventure which makes for 14 amazing days in Croatia.
