Discover the Giants of Amboseli: A Private Safari Adventure.

Join Photo Workshop Adventures and award-winning fine art wildlife photographer Johan Siggesson on an intimate photographic journey into the heart of Amboseli National Park—a land where Africa’s largest elephants roam beneath the towering silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its legendary super tuskers, Amboseli offers perhaps the greatest stage in the world for photographing elephants in all their majesty.

This exclusive private safari is designed for those who want more than just a game drive—it’s a deep immersion into Amboseli’s iconic landscapes and the lives of the gentle giants who call it home. Here, vast golden plains meet shimmering wetlands, and the drama of wildlife plays out with Kilimanjaro as the eternal backdrop. Our primary focus will be to photograph elephants as they live—gracefully crossing the savanna in the soft light of dawn, cooling themselves in the swamps, or gathering in close-knit family groups.

Under Johan’s expert guidance, you’ll gain insider knowledge of animal behavior and learn to anticipate the moments that make for unforgettable images. He’ll share his creative approach in the field, helping you refine both your technical skills and artistic vision—whether you’re a seasoned wildlife photographer or holding a long lens for the very first time.

Because this is a private, highly flexible safari, we can adapt each day to your goals, following the light, the weather, and the movements of the wildlife. Alongside elephants, we’ll also have the chance to photograph Amboseli’s rich diversity of life, including zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and an array of birdlife—all framed by one of Africa’s most breathtaking horizons.

And should fortune be on our side, we may encounter the park’s most celebrated resident—Craig, a calm and dignified super tusker whose massive ivory is among the largest in Africa. If he is within range, we will dedicate ourselves to finding him, ensuring that you have the rare opportunity to photograph one of nature’s most iconic living treasures.

This wildlife photo safari is available only as a private through Photo Workshop Adventures. Request a proposal today.

ITINERARY

10 DAY | THE GIANTS OF AMBOSELI

(This is a sample Itinerary. Curate your own itinerary to your personal preferences)

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

Upon arrival in Nairobi, you’ll be transferred to our hotel where you can settle in after your journey. The afternoon is yours to relax, refresh, or explore the vibrant city at your leisure. As evening falls, we’ll come together for a welcome dinner, where you’ll meet your fellow travelers and connect with Johan Siggesson, your guide and photography mentor for the days ahead.

Over a shared meal, Johan will outline the details of our journey, discuss our photographic goals, and introduce you to the unique opportunities Amboseli offers—especially its unmatched potential for capturing Africa’s most majestic elephants against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.

This evening sets the stage for the adventure to come, blending camaraderie, inspiration, and anticipation for the days ahead. (D)

Day 2: Journey to Amboseli National Park – First Encounters

After an early breakfast, we set out for Amboseli National Park, traveling either by a short scenic flight or a leisurely five-hour drive through the Kenyan countryside. As we approach the park, the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro will rise on the horizon—a dramatic backdrop that makes Amboseli one of the most photogenic wildlife destinations in Africa.

Upon arrival at our luxury safari camp, you’ll have time to settle into your tented suite and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch while taking in the sweeping views of the savanna. In the late afternoon, we’ll embark on our first game drive, easing into the rhythm of Amboseli as we encounter its legendary elephants—perhaps a matriarch leading her herd across the golden plains or a lone bull silhouetted against Kilimanjaro’s fading light. This first drive offers a tantalizing glimpse of the photographic wonders to come, with Johan on hand to help you start honing your creative vision. (B, L, D)

Days 3–9: Immersed in the Heart of Amboseli

At first light, we head out onto the plains, when Amboseli’s wildlife is most active and the air is still cool. With luck, Mount Kilimanjaro will reveal itself, providing a spectacular backdrop to the elephants’ morning movements. We’ll often bring along a packed breakfast so we can remain in the field, maximizing our time in these golden hours.

Midday Breaks:
We return to camp for lunch and a well-earned rest. This is the perfect time to back up and review your images, experiment with post-processing techniques, or simply unwind while watching wildlife wander near camp.

Afternoon Drives:
As the heat softens and the light turns warm and rich, we’ll set out again. The late afternoon is perfect for capturing Amboseli’s vibrant colors, long shadows, and intimate wildlife moments. Whether it’s a matriarch guiding her family to water or giraffes moving gracefully across the acacia-dotted plains, the scenes are endlessly inspiring.

During these days, we’ll explore Amboseli’s signature landscapes—from the shimmering dry lakebed where elephants often make dramatic crossings, to the lush swamps that draw herds and birdlife alike. Every drive will reveal new perspectives, unexpected encounters, and the chance to create images that embody the spirit of Amboseli.

Every evening, we return to the comfort of camp, swapping stories over dinner beneath a canopy of stars, the night alive with the distant calls of the very animals we’ve been photographing. (B, L, D)

Day 10 | Final Morning Game Drive & Farewell to the Serengeti

Our last morning in the Namiri Plains begins in the quiet glow of dawn. If time allows, we’ll venture out for one final game drive, a chance to watch the Serengeti come alive one more time, hear the deep calls of lions echo across the plains, and capture the golden light spilling over the grasslands. Every sight and sound feels more vivid on this final day, each frame a lasting memory of our journey.

We’ll return to camp for breakfast, sharing stories, laughter, and favorite moments over fresh coffee. Soon after, we board our flight toward the departure airport. From there, you may choose to continue your African adventure or begin your journey home, carrying with you not only a portfolio of remarkable images, but also the indelible spirit of the Serengeti. (B)

This is an exclusive PWA private safari with Johan, and the itinerary you’ve seen here is only a framework—designed to inspire. We welcome your preferences so we can tailor every detail to your vision. For those seeking even more, this journey can be seamlessly paired with our PWA Private Safari with Johan in Tanzania’s Namiri Plains where the legendary Big Cats of the Serengeti roam, a fitting encore to an unforgettable photographic expedition.
