UNDISCOVERED ROMANIA

Bucharest, Brasov, Cluj Napoca, Breb, Talisoara, Bucovina

Step into Romania, where old-world charm meets untamed wilderness.

Romania is a land of mystery, history, and striking natural beauty; a place where time seems to pause and traditions are preserved with grace. Join our 13-day Undiscovered Romania Photo Tour and capture the soul of this remarkable country through its people, landscapes, and architecture. From the medieval streets of Brașov to the timeless villages of Maramureș and Bucovina, this journey invites you to explore Romania through storytelling, adventure, and artistry.

Our photo adventure begins in Bucharest, Romania’s vibrant capital, where old-world charm meets modern energy. Wander through its elegant Belle Époque boulevards and remnants of the communist era as you photograph grand landmarks like the Palace of the Parliament and the lively Piata Obor market. The streets of the Old Town, full of character and color, provide the perfect setting for street photography before we journey deeper into Romania’s countryside for its landscapes and cultural richness.

Heading north to Brașov, nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, we’ll explore a city steeped in history and charm. With its gothic architecture, colorful facades, and inviting squares, Brașov is a visual delight. We’ll photograph the iconic Black Church and the surrounding medieval streets before visiting the nearby Bran Castle, famous for its ties to the Dracula legend. While the myth adds intrigue, the true magic lies in its commanding presence and panoramic mountain backdrop. In the nearby villages, century-old wooden farmhouses and horse-drawn carts reveal timeless scenes of traditional Romanian life; a paradise for photographers seeking authenticity.

Continuing further into the heart of the country, Maramureș unfolds as a living open-air museum. Here, life remains governed by the rhythms of nature and ancient customs. We’ll document local craftsmen shaping wood and metal, women wearing handwoven clothing, and elders whose faces reflect the stories of generations past. The wooden churches of Maramureș, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites, showcase remarkable craftsmanship and stand proudly against sweeping landscapes. We’ll also visit the Merry Cemetery of Săpânța, where vividly painted tombstones and humorous epitaphs bring a unique celebration of life to every frame.

Next, we explore Bucovina, home to Romania’s famous painted monasteries; masterpieces adorned with colorful exterior frescoes that depict centuries-old biblical tales. These UNESCO-listed sanctuaries, set amid rolling hills and farmland, create exceptional opportunities for architectural and cultural photography. In surrounding villages, we’ll meet artisans who master traditional crafts such as pottery and icon painting, offering a glimpse into Romania’s artistic soul. The pace slows here, inviting us to linger, compose, and capture the essence of life’s finer details.

Towards the end of our journey, we reach Szeklerland, a Hungarian-speaking region in eastern Transylvania. Here, ornate Székely wooden gates, distinctive architecture, and Hungarian-inspired cuisine reflect a vibrant blend of cultures. We’ll photograph rustic farms, centuries-old churches, and lesser-explored villages that remain beautifully untouched by time.

This small-group experience is more than a photography tour; it’s an artistic exploration of a country where history, culture, and nature meet in perfect harmony. From city streets to mountain villages, every photograph reveals the heart and soul of Romania. Join us on this unforgettable photo journey through Europe’s hidden gem.

ITINERARY

ROMANIA PHOTO TOUR – 13 DAYS

Day 1 | Bucharest

We’ll begin our tour with lunch, followed by a privately guided walking photo tour through the heart of Bucharest, a perfect introduction to the city known as the Little Paris of the East.

This discovery photography tour reveals the fascinating layers of Bucharest’s past and present. We’ll stroll through the historical center, where echoes of the Ottoman era mingle with the elegance of Belle Époque architecture and the grandeur of the former Royal Palace. Learn how the city transformed during the interwar years into a thriving European capital, then delve into the stark contrasts brought by the communist period; symbolized by the colossal Palace of Parliament. As the day unfolds, you’ll experience the energy of today’s Bucharest: vibrant, creative, and full of life. This immersive tour offers more than sights, it offers a true sense of place.

In the evening, we’ll have our “Welcome Dinner” at the iconic Caru’ cu Bere restaurant. Set in a beautifully restored building rich in Neo-Gothic charm, it’s the perfect spot to soak in the interwar ambiance that once defined Bucharest. A favorite among travelers and locals for over a century, the atmosphere is lively, the architecture impressive, and while the cuisine may not be Michelin-starred, the traditional Romanian dishes (including vegetarian options) offer a flavorful and memorable end to your day. (D)

Day 2 | Bucharest

We’ll begin with an early morning stroll through the streets of Bucharest, followed by breakfast After that, we’ll do a photo walk into a different Bucharest. Far from the usual tourist routes, today is about exploring the city’s lesser-known neighborhoods and places where daily life unfolds quietly and authentically. As you wander through the culturally rich mahallas (a traditional neighborhood), you’ll have the chance to observe and photograph the subtle rhythms of local life.

We’ll continue on to one of Bucharest’s largest and most vibrant markets, where colors, faces, and voices mix in a dynamic scene that invites both curiosity and creativity. Along the way, you’ll sample a few local bites; simple, traditional foods that speak to the city’s roots, and maybe even pause for a shot of țuică, Romania’s strong homemade brandy, shared in good spirits.

It will be a day of slow discovery, ideal for those looking to connect with Bucharest not just through sights, but through its people, its textures, and its quiet authenticity.

In the evening, we will have a drink at a local bar followed by another wonderful dinner. (B) (D)

Day 3 | Bucharest - Holbav - Brasov

After breakfast, we’ll leave Bucharest behind and head to Transylvania and its bucolic countryside including Holbav, a magical place, almost like a fairyland.

We’ll explore the hill-top villages and get to meet the people here. Opportunities for both landscape and people photography await us in Holbav, one of Romania’s best-kept secrets. Nestled in the mountain slopes above Brasov, this is a traditional shepherd village.

Here, we will immerse ourselves in the authentic essence of Romanian life. Engaging with the locals, observing their humble lifestyle, and capturing these moments promise to be a delightful experience for every photographer.

Later in the evening, we’ll arrive in Brasov, a beautiful medieval city where we’ll spend the next two nights. (B)

Day 4 | Brasov - Mountain Village - Bran - Brasov

Today, we’ll travel to a picturesque village tucked at the foot of the dramatic Piatra Craiului Mountains, a place where time feels slower, the air is crisp, and every corner tells a quiet story. With panoramic views and winding paths through meadows and hills, this area offers endless opportunities to capture the natural beauty and rural charm of Romania.

We’ll take our time on a relaxed walk or gentle hike, camera in hand, as the light shifts across the peaks and village life unfolds at its own pace. Later on, we’ll visit a talented egg-painting artisan, whose vibrant, detailed work reflects a centuries-old tradition. She’ll welcome us into her home, share the stories behind her craft, and serve us a home-cooked lunch, a chance to document not only a beautiful tradition, but the warmth of local hospitality.

In the afternoon, we’ll stop at the legendary Bran Castle, known worldwide as “Dracula’s Castle”; its medieval silhouette makes for a striking contrast to the peaceful countryside you’ve explored. Be sure to bring with you holy water, a crucifix, a wooden stake made of hawthorn, ash, or aspen, and a silver bullet (if you carry a revolver).

The evening is yours to relax, review your shots, and head out for dinner. (B) (L) (D)

Day 5 | Brasov - Viscri - Sighisoara - Cluj-Napoca

We’ll leave behind the vibrant streets of Brasov and head toward the storybook town of Sighisoara, with a stop in the beautifully preserved Saxon village of Viscri. This rural gem offers striking photo opportunities, from its UNESCO-listed fortified church, with its thick walls and centuries-old patina, to the quiet lanes lined with colorful Saxon houses that seem untouched by time.

Viscri is also home to a residence owned by King Charles, who has long been captivated by the region’s timeless charm and rural traditions. After that, we’ll begin our drive to our next destination, Sighisoara.

In Sighisoara, cobbled streets, clock towers, and pastel facades invite you to slow down and shoot the details of one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval citadels. This atmospheric hilltop town is full of character and shadow ideal for capturing both grand architectural shots and intimate street moments. And yes, for those drawn to folklore, it’s said to be the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the real-life figure behind the Dracula legend.

In the late afternoon, we’ll continue our journey to Cluj-Napoca, Romania’s second largest city and a vibrant cultural hub where we’ll spend the night. (B)

Day 6 | Cluj-Napoca - Maramures - Breb

After breakfast, we’ll leave Cluj-Napoca and begin our journey toward Maramures, a region known for its
rich traditions and serene landscapes. About two hours into the drive, we’ll stop in a small village off the tourist path, where you’ll meet a young local woman who has the keys and cares for a centuries-old wooden church, a place tied closely to her family’s history, as her grandfather once served there as priest. She’ll prepare a delicious home-made picnic, which we’ll enjoy in the peaceful setting of the churchyard.

It’s a quiet, meaningful stop, one that offers the chance to capture the contrast between history and present day, between sacred architecture and rural life. If she’s wearing traditional clothing, it might add another layer of interest for those who enjoy photographing people and culture.

From there, we’ll continue the drive toward Breb, with plenty of opportunities along the way to pause for photos, be it wide landscapes, village scenes, or spontaneous moments with locals. If time permits, we may also visit a UNESCO-listed wooden church in Șurdesti or Plopis, simple, beautiful examples of the region’s wooden heritage.

A day shaped by landscapes, soft encounters, and glimpses of living tradition. At the end of the day, we’ll settle in at a traditional and charming bed and breakfast, rich with history. (B) (L)

Day 7 | Desesti - Sapanta - Sighetu Marmatiei - Breb

We may start the day attending the religious ceremony at the UNESCO Heritage Church in Desesti (mid-18th century) where villagers still attend in big numbers, many of them wearing traditional clothes.

After lunch with a local, we will head to Sapanta to visit the colorful Merry Cemetery. a unique site unlike any other cemetery in the world. The colorful wooden crosses, adorned with traditional motifs, line the graves, each one telling the story of the departed with witty and humorous inscriptions. This charming blend of humor and history captures the essence of the Romanian spirit, resilient in the face of hardship, yet always able to find laughter.

On the way back to Breb, we may stop at the Museum of the Victims of Communism in Sighetu Marmatiei. This museum offers a poignant and powerful look into Romania’s recent history, focusing on the suffering endured by the people under the communist regime. It is housed in the former Sighet Prison, where political prisoners were held during the oppressive years. Visiting the museum is a deeply moving experience, shedding light on the resilience and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom and human rights. It’s a stop that adds emotional depth and historical context to your journey through the region.

You’ll end the day relaxing on your terrace, enjoying the serene atmosphere, and reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of the day. (B) (L)

Day 8 | Breb

Today, we’ll take time to explore the area and quietly observe the atmosphere of autumn around Breb.

With cameras in hand, we’ll keep an eye out for seasonal colors; pumpkins in courtyards, fading leaves, and the subtle beauty of the landscape. As we move through the village and nearby fields, we may come across a few everyday scenes worth capturing such as locals going about their routines and simple details that reflect life here. We’ll stop for lunch with a local, offering a relaxed moment to enjoy regional flavors and perhaps take a few informal shots.

In the late afternoon, we’ll look for an opportunity to catch the sunset, weather permitting. Whether the light is dramatic or soft, it’s a quiet way to end the day and take in the surroundings from above. (B) (L)

Day 9 | Breb - Barsana Monastery - Sucevita

Today marks the celebration of Saint Parascheva, the Protector of Moldavia and Bucovina, and one of the most venerated saints in Romania. Across the region, many churches will hold religious services offering a quiet opportunity to observe and, where appropriate, photograph moments of devotion and tradition.

We’ll visit Barsana Monastery, known for its wooden architecture and peaceful atmosphere, as well as a smaller church dedicated to Saint Parascheva, where the local community may be gathering to mark the occasion. These stops offer a window into the spiritual life of the region, and a chance to reflect on its deep-rooted customs.

Our journey continues through the Prislop, Sadova, and Ciumarna Passes, with its winding roads and dramatic views – an ever-changing landscape that invites you to pause and take it all in.

By evening, we’ll arrive at our welcoming guesthouse in Sucevita, where a homemade dinner awaits, bringing the day to a gentle and satisfying close. (B) (D)

Day 10 | Bucovina

Tucked into the rolling hills of northern Moldova, Bucovina is a region where faith, tradition, and artistry come together in a striking harmony. Home to the world-renowned Painted Monasteries, UNESCO World Heritage sites, this area holds some of Romania’s most treasured spiritual landmarks. Built in the 15th and 16th centuries, these monasteries are adorned with vivid exterior frescoes that have remarkably withstood time, offering a window into centuries-old beliefs and stories.

Beyond its remarkable architecture, Bucovina captivates with its welcoming communities, rich cultural heritage, and a living tradition of handmade crafts that continue to shape everyday life. All of this is set against a backdrop of rolling hills and natural beauty that invites quiet exploration and reflection.

Today’s experience offers a balanced mix: we’ll stop at a couple of the region’s stunning monasteries (Sucevita and Moldovita), with time to quietly observe or photograph. We will have the chance to meet a nun or two, sharing the history and meanings of the frescoes. If the timing aligns, we can also photograph the local steam train in Moldovita as it passes through the landscape, a nostalgic moment in motion.

There will be time for a short walk in nature, a visit to a local artisan or perhaps simply a quiet interaction with villagers along the way. It’s a day to take in Bucovina at your own rhythm through its art, its people, and its stories. (B)

Day 11 | Bicaz Lake - Bicaz Gorges - Red Lake - Szekely

After a generous breakfast, we’ll say goodbye to our welcoming hosts in Sucevita and begin the journey back toward Transylvania.

Today’s route will take you through some of the more varied landscapes of the region: passing Bicaz Lake, continuing through the winding Bicaz Gorges, and by the quiet waters of the Red Lake. While much of the day will be spent on the road, there will be chances to stop and take in the scenery.

By late afternoon, we’ll reach our destination in Székely Land, where we’ll stay in a restored historic building that offers a comfortable and atmospheric setting for the night. It’s a travel day, but with a mix of shifting views and subtle photographic moments along the way. (B)

Day 12 | Szekely Village - Prejmer - Bucharest

On our final full day, we’ll begin the day with a visit to a local artisan; a chance to observe traditional skills and perhaps capture a few quiet moments of craft and daily life.
