Uzbekistan Unveiled: Our Newest Photo Adventure
We’re excited to introduce the beautiful country of Uzbekistan as one of our newest destinations in Asia. At the crossroads of ancient civilizations, this remarkable country brings together magnificent Silk Road cities, intricate architecture, timeless traditions, vast desert landscapes, and warm, welcoming people. It’s a place where history isn’t simply preserved; it’s woven into everyday life.
Our new 12-day Uzbekistan Photo Tour & Cultural Adventure takes us from the vibrant streets of Tashkent to the ancient walled city of Khiva, the historic streets of Bukhara, the vast Kyzylkum Desert, and the magnificent monuments of Samarkand.
Along the way, we’ll photograph far more than grand architecture. We’ll meet local artisans in their workshops, wander through colorful bazaars, spend time with rural families, photograph camel herders in the desert, experience traditional food and crafts, and look for the quiet moments that reveal the soul of Uzbekistan.
Tashkent: Where Old Meets New
Our adventure begins in Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital and largest city, where ancient traditions meet the remnants of its Soviet past.
Here, historic mosques stand alongside monumental Soviet architecture, while the city’s famous metro offers a surprisingly beautiful world beneath the streets. We’ll explore Chorsu Bazaar for street photography, experience local cuisine, and begin getting to know the rhythms of modern Uzbekistan. Then, we’ll fly west to Khiva, where the feeling of stepping into another era truly begins.
Khiva: A City Frozen in Time
Inside the ancient walls of Itchan Kala, ochre-colored buildings contrast beautifully with deep indigo and turquoise tilework. Minarets, madrasas, mausoleums, mosques, and palaces create an extraordinary setting for photography, particularly in the warm light of morning and late afternoon.
But Khiva is about more than architecture. We’ll photograph traditional performers, artisans at work, local people in the narrow streets, and the everyday moments that bring this historic city to life. As evening falls, we’ll take our cameras and tripods out again for blue-hour photography before watching the sun set over the Old City.
Bukhara: Where the Past Lives On
From Khiva, we continue to Bukhara, one of the great historic centers of the Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Bukhara is the kind of place that seems almost too beautiful to be real. Medieval architecture, intricate tilework, turquoise domes, grand arches, and a maze of old streets provide endless opportunities for architectural and street photography.
We’ll photograph the magnificent Kalyan Minaret and Poi Kalon Ensemble, explore the city’s historic Trade Domes, and capture the four turquoise minarets of Chor Minor Madrasa in the golden light of sunset.
But some of the most memorable photographs may come from the people we meet along the way. Bukhara is home to master craftsmen—silk weavers, potters, blacksmiths, woodworkers, hatters, and others whose skills have been passed from one generation to the next. We’ll have opportunities to photograph them at work and create environmental portraits that tell a story about both the person and the place.
And sometimes, the best moments happen when you put the camera down. Locals may invite us in for tea, students may stop to chat, and conversations can unfold naturally in the streets. These encounters reveal another side of Uzbekistan—one that can’t be captured by photographing monuments alone.
From Ceramics to the Desert
Our wonderful adventure then takes us through Gijduvan, a small town renowned for its ceramics tradition. We’ll visit a family of potters and photograph the process from the spinning wheel to the kiln, followed by a shared lunch cooked over an open fire.
From there, the landscape changes dramatically as we enter the Kyzylkum Desert. At Aydarkul Yurt Camp, we’ll photograph camel herders and their animals against the dunes during golden hour. As night settles over the desert, we’ll leave the city lights behind and turn our cameras toward the stars for an evening of astrophotography beneath the Central Asian sky.
The following morning brings another change of scene: sunrise over Lake Aydarkul, followed by a visit with a rural family where we’ll photograph the traditional process of baking bread in a tandoor oven.
It’s a wonderful reminder of what makes this adventure so special. Within just a few days, we move from grand Silk Road cities to quiet desert landscapes and intimate family moments.
Samarkand: The Heart of the Silk Road
Our final major destination is Samarkand, perhaps the city most closely associated with the mystery and romance of the ancient Silk Road.
One of Central Asia’s oldest cities, Samarkand has been shaped by centuries of trade, conquest, science, philosophy, art, and architecture. Its magnificent monuments and intricate mosaics provide some of the most spectacular photography of the entire journey.
We’ll also visit the city’s ancient necropolis, explore courtyards filled with colorful tiles and mosaics, photograph a traditional paper-making workshop, and take time to review some of our favorite images together before our final evening in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan feels like a destination from another time, yet the experience of traveling through it feels remarkably alive. It is the blue of a tiled dome against a clear sky. The warmth of an artisan welcoming you into a workshop. The sound of a bustling bazaar. Fresh bread emerging from a tandoor. A camel disappearing into the desert light. A quiet cup of tea shared with a local family. And the first rays of sunlight illuminating an ancient Silk Road city.
Our Uzbekistan Photo Tour is all set to run from September 25–October 6, 2027, followed by another one from September 23–October 4, 2028.
