Announcing Updated Romania: A Newly Crafted Undiscovered Romania Photo Tour

Our Undiscovered Romania Photo Tour returns with an updated itinerary designed to keep you closer to the moments that matter most. We have refined the flow so you spend less time on long drives and more time where real stories unfold, with your camera in hand. At the same time, we have reduced the group size to just 4 guests so you can enjoy a more intimate experience.

This 11-day journey begins in Cluj-Napoca, moves through the tradition-rich region of Maramureș, continues to Bucharest, and concludes in Cluj-Napoca. Along the way, you photograph village life in places such as Breb and Glod, meet local artisans, and witness customs that continue to shape daily routines.

You experience the quiet rhythm of rural Maramureș, then contrast it with time in Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca, Romania’s largest and second largest cities. From wooden churches and pastoral hills to colourful sites like the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța, each stop builds a deeper visual narrative of Romania’s culture, people, and landscape.

Behind every tour we offer is a process of continual reflection and care. We revisit our routes, spend time on the ground, and assess how each day flows to see where small improvements can make a meaningful difference. The goal of this update is simple. Give you more meaningful time in the field, stronger photographic opportunities, and a smoother journey across one of Europe’s most compelling destinations.

A Refreshed Itinerary Built Around Real Moments

The updated itinerary keeps you close to the places where Romania’s story lives in daily routines. You begin in Cluj-Napoca, a city where Baroque and Gothic architecture, intimate squares, and café-lined streets create strong opportunities for street and architectural photography. From historic centres to views over the city from Cetățuia Hill, the setting offers a layered introduction before you move into quieter regions.

From there, the journey leads north toward Baia Mare and into Maramureș, where the heart of the experience unfolds. In villages like Breb, you photograph farmers, herders, and families as they move through everyday tasks such as haymaking and tending livestock. These are not staged scenes. Life continues around you as it always has.

You then experience a clear shift in pace and setting as you travel to Bucharest, Romania’s capital and largest city. Here, broad boulevards, Belle Époque façades, street life, and traces of the communist era offer a different visual rhythm. The contrast between rural Maramureș and urban Bucharest deepens your understanding of the country’s character.

You also visit places that reveal deeper cultural context. In Săpânța, the Merry Cemetery presents hand-painted wooden crosses that tell personal stories with colour and humour. In Botiza, local artisans work at wooden looms, creating traditional woven carpets using natural dyes. In Ieud, shepherds guide flocks across open hills near one of the region’s historic wooden churches.

Each stop sits close enough to maintain a steady rhythm, so your time remains focused on observation, connection, and photography rather than long transfers between locations.

Led by Experienced Photographic Leaders in the Field

Each Romania photo tour is guided by an experienced photography leader with a strong background in travel, street, people, and landscape photography. Your leader works alongside you in the field, offering clear, practical guidance that helps you see with greater awareness and purpose.

Instead of moving quickly from place to place, your leader encourages you to slow down and stay present. You work a scene, study shifting light, and observe how people move through a space. In Maramureș, that might mean waiting as a farmer returns from the fields. In Bucharest or Cluj-Napoca, it could mean watching how city life unfolds at an intersection or in a quiet square.

This approach gives situations time to develop. You gain the space to create images that feel honest, layered, and connected to the place and people in front of you.
