Step Into Slovenia: Our Newest Photo Adventure
We’re excited to introduce a new destination to the Photo Workshop Adventures collection: Slovenia. Tucked between the Alps, the Adriatic, and Central Europe, Slovenia is a country of emerald rivers, alpine lakes, charming towns, dramatic mountain landscapes, and centuries-old architecture. It’s remarkably diverse for a country so compact, and an extraordinary place to explore with a camera.
Our new 8-day Slovenia Photo Tour & Cultural Adventure takes you from the elegant streets of Ljubljana into the Julian Alps, through the turquoise waters of the Soča Valley, around the tranquil shores of Lake Bohinj, the iconic Lake Bled, and finally to Slovenia’s Adriatic coast and the Venetian town of Piran.
This photo tour is much more than just checking beautiful places off a list. We’ll be looking for the light, the details, the people, the architecture, and those fleeting moments that turn a beautiful destination into a meaningful photograph.
A Small Country with an Incredible Variety of Landscapes
Our adventure begins in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s charming capital. The city is wonderfully walkable, with the Ljubljanica River winding through its historic center, pastel façades, riverside cafés, elegant bridges, and Ljubljana Castle rising above the rooftops.
We’ll explore the Baroque heart of the old town, photograph the famous Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge, wander through the Central Market, and work with the changing light along the river. As evening arrives, the city takes on a different character, with reflections and café lights creating wonderful opportunities for blue-hour photography.
From Ljubljana, we head into the mountains and across the spectacular Vršič Pass, Slovenia’s highest mountain road. With sweeping views of the Julian Alps and more than 50 hairpin turns, the journey itself becomes part of the photographic experience.
We’ll then descend into the Soča Valley, where the Soča River cuts through the landscape in an extraordinary shade of turquoise-green. Waterfalls, limestone gorges, forests, mountain scenery, and remnants from the First World War create an entirely different visual story. We’ll have a full day to explore the valley and work with long exposures and water photography along the river.
Lakes, Mountains, and Slovenia’s Most Iconic Views
From the Soča Valley, we continue through Triglav National Park toward Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest natural lake and a quieter alternative to its more famous neighbor, Lake Bled.
Bohinj offers a beautiful combination of mountain scenery, clear water, forests, waterfalls, and historic architecture. We’ll photograph Savica Waterfall and the small Church of St. John the Baptist along the lake before continuing to Lake Bled.
Bled is one of those places that seems almost made for photography: an island church sitting in the middle of the lake, a medieval castle perched above the water, and surrounding peaks reflected in the still surface. We’ll photograph it at sunrise and sunset, when changing light can transform the scene completely.
We’ll also visit Vintgar Gorge, where the Radovna River winds through limestone walls beneath wooden walkways. With flowing water, dramatic rock formations, and forest surroundings, it offers another wonderful opportunity to slow down and explore long-exposure photography.
From the Alps to the Adriatic
One of the things that makes this adventure so special is the dramatic change in scenery as we travel south.
Leaving the mountains behind, we’ll cross Slovenia’s Karst region and stop at Predjama Castle, dramatically built into a cliff face above a cave mouth. From there, we continue to the Adriatic coast and Piran, a beautiful Venetian-era town of narrow stone lanes, old rooftops, and views across the sea.
Nearby, the Sečovlje Salt Pans offer yet another distinctive landscape to photograph, particularly in the warm coastal light of late afternoon. We’ll finish our adventure with a farewell dinner overlooking the harbor before one final sunrise over Piran and the Adriatic.
A New PWA Adventure for 2027 & 2028
Slovenia is the kind of destination that rewards curiosity. In just 8 days, we’ll experience alpine landscapes, rivers and waterfalls, historic cities, lakes, forests, castles, coastal villages, and the Adriatic—all while traveling in a small group of just 4–6 guests with a professional photographer and guide.
Our Slovenia Photo Tours are scheduled for October 17–24, 2027, followed by October 16–23, 2028. October brings the Julian Alps and Soča Valley alive with autumn color, while the lakes often offer misty mornings and the coast takes on a warm, golden glow.
