Our adventure begins in Cluj-Napoca, Romania’s second-largest city, where Gothic and Baroque architecture, lively cafés, historic squares, and youthful energy create a wonderful setting for street, architectural, and environmental photography. From Unirii Square and St. Michael’s Church to the panoramic views from Cetățuia Hill, you’ll experience a city where centuries of history meet a vibrant contemporary culture.
From Cluj, we travel north toward Maramureș, leaving the city behind for a landscape of rolling hills, wooden houses, hayfields, horse-drawn carts, and villages where traditions remain woven into everyday life. Along the way, we’ll explore local communities, and share a memorable homemade picnic at a centuries-old wooden church cared for by a young woman whose grandfather once served as its priest.
Then we arrive in Breb, where the pace slows considerably. Here, farmers tend their animals, hay is gathered by hand, shepherds guide their flocks, and wooden gates open onto a way of life that feels wonderfully removed from the modern world.

In Breb, you’ll have the opportunity to photograph everyday life as it unfolds naturally: an elderly woman sweeping her yard, a woodcarver working quietly by a window, farmers moving through the fields, and horse-drawn carts carrying hay along village lanes. The journey continues through some of Maramureș’s most remarkable cultural landscapes. At Săpânța’s Merry Cemetery, colorful hand-painted crosses and witty epitaphs offer a uniquely Romanian perspective on life, death, and resilience. In Botiza, you’ll meet artisans who continue the tradition of weaving vegetal carpets on wooden looms, capturing the textures, natural dyes, hands, and stories behind a craft passed down through generations.
In Ieud, shepherds lead their flocks across rolling hills, while the village’s UNESCO-listed wooden church provides another opportunity to photograph the remarkable connection between faith, architecture, and community. And then there are the unexpected moments — a conversation with a local, a market filled with color and character, a glass of țuică shared with a new friend, or the soft evening light settling over the hills. We’ll also venture beyond the usual tourist routes, exploring lesser-known neighborhoods, local markets, and the everyday rhythms of Bucharest. From the grandeur of the Palace of the Parliament to quiet streets where residents go about their daily lives, the capital provides a fascinating contrast to the villages we’ve come to know.
It’s a fitting way to end the photo tour. After experiencing a Romania where time seems to slow down, Bucharest brings us back into the present — energetic, creative, and full of movement.
