Exploring the Hidden Wonders: My Cave Adventure in the Algarve with Photo Workshop Adventures
Story by Roman Martin
This May, I embarked on an unforgettable journey with Photo Workshop Adventures to explore the mesmerizing caves of the Algarve, Portugal.
Known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, golden beaches, and turquoise waters, the Algarve hides some of nature’s most stunning secrets beneath its surface and along its coastline. Our mission? To capture the raw beauty of these caves through the lens while immersing ourselves in their geological and cultural stories.

The Journey Begins
Our adventure started in Portimao, a charming coastal town buzzing with history and vibrant energy. After meeting our expert skipper, we set off for a short boat ride to the iconic Benagil Cave, one of the Algarve’s most photographed natural wonders.
However, this cave is not the first one we visited; we had many more on the coast before we reached the Benagil cave. The anticipation built as the boat skimmed over crystal waters, with rugged cliffs looming on either side.

Not only the Cave
Along the coast, we explore the cliffs, coastal towns, lighthouses, and fishermen, who are the first boats we notice early in the morning. I like the early morning mood, especially because you can’t see any tourist boats on the horizon. This is beneficial because we need empty caves and peace to catch the morning light and explore the beautiful interiors.
After navigating through several caves and narrow passages, where our skipper skilfully kept us safe. Remember, this is an adventurous journey through big waves and around rocks, we continued our trip to the most famous one.
In recent years, the government has made a statement that no one without a skilled skipper and a proper license can enter the caves. Previously, in the caves, you could see surfers, kayakers, swimmers, and others, but this is no longer possible. That gives us more comfort to get better or amazing shots.

Inside Benagil Cave
Stepping into Benagil Cave felt like entering another world. The cave’s massive dome, carved by centuries of waves, revealed a hidden beach illuminated by a natural skylight in the ceiling. Sunlight streamed through, casting a golden glow on the sand and reflecting off the water.
I snapped countless photos, experimenting with angles to capture the cave’s ethereal beauty. Our guide pointed out subtle details, like the textures of the rock formations and the way light danced on the water that transformed my shots from good to breathtaking.
Beyond photography, the cave’s serene atmosphere was humbling. We learned about its formation, shaped over millennia by the Atlantic’s relentless tides, and its significance to local fishermen who once used it as a shelter. This blend of natural history and practical photography tips made the experience rich and multidimensional.

Reflections on the Adventure
As the sun set on our final day, I reflected on the magic of the Algarve’s caves. Each one told a unique story of nature’s artistry, of human connection to the land, and of the joy of capturing fleeting moments through photography.
Photo Workshop Adventures made this experience seamless, blending expert guidance, hands-on learning, and a passion for exploration. Our small-group approach ensured personalized attention, allowing guests to grow as photographers while soaking in the wonders around them.
