Costa Rica Through a Photographer’s Eyes
Costa Rica is a small country, but it packs an incredible amount of nature into its borders. Rainforests, Pacific coastlines, rivers, beaches, and an astonishing variety of wildlife make it one of the most interesting places in the world for nature and wildlife photography.
The Osa Peninsula is particularly special. Located on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, it covers more than 700 square miles and contains an estimated 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity. National Geographic has called it one of the most biologically intense places on Earth.
And with that in mind, here are some of the reasons Costa Rica is such a fascinating destination for photographers.

A Forest Full of Wildlife
One of the first things you notice in Costa Rica is that wildlife is everywhere. The Osa Peninsula is home to four species of monkeys, including Howler, Spider, White-Faced Capuchin, and the endangered Squirrel Monkey. Sloths move slowly through the trees, while coati and tamandua can sometimes be found closer to the forest floor.
There are also sea turtles, poison dart frogs, and, if you’re very lucky, even a Puma. And for photographers, the fun is not just finding these animals. It is watching them in their natural environment and waiting for the right moment.
A monkey moving through the canopy, a sloth looking down from a branch, or a frog sitting on a brightly colored flower can all make for very different kinds of photographs. And you never quite know what you are going to find.

When the Birds Steal the Show
Costa Rica is also a paradise for bird photographers. Toucans are among the most recognizable birds in the country, with their oversized bills and striking colors. But they are only part of the story. Tanagers, hummingbirds, parrots, and Scarlet Macaws are also found throughout the region.
The Scarlet Macaw is particularly spectacular. Its bright red, blue, and yellow feathers stand out against the deep green of the rainforest, making it one of those subjects that almost seems too colorful to be real.
Hummingbirds provide a completely different challenge. They move incredibly quickly, darting from flower to flower and often hovering in place for only a few seconds. This is where patience becomes an important part of photography. And sometimes, you have to wait for the photograph rather than chase it.

The Osa Peninsula
The Osa Peninsula is the centerpiece of our Costa Rica adventure, and it is easy to see why. The peninsula is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, with tropical rainforest, rivers, beaches, and an extraordinary concentration of wildlife.
Rather than simply passing through, we use our hotel as a base for exploring the surrounding area. This gives us time to photograph in different conditions and return to places when the light is right.
Rainforest photography can be challenging because there is so much happening at once. There are leaves, branches, shadows, bright patches of sunlight, and animals moving through all of it. But that is also what makes it interesting. There is always something to look at.

More Than Just Wildlife
Costa Rica is famous for its wildlife, but there is much more to photograph. The landscapes and seascapes are a big part of the experience. The Pacific coast provides opportunities for wide scenic photographs, while the rainforest offers endless possibilities for details, textures, and intimate nature images.
We will also photograph local fishermen, ranchers, surfers, and everyday scenes that give us a glimpse into Costa Rican life. These photographs help tell a more complete story of the country. After all, a destination is not just its landscapes and animals. The people who live there are part of the picture too.

Small Subjects, Big Photographs
Not every great photograph in Costa Rica will be of a toucan or a monkey. Look a little closer and you will find another world. The rainforest is filled with small subjects that are easy to overlook. Colorful frogs, insects, flowers, leaves, and other tiny details can all become excellent subjects for macro photography.
The Red-Eyed Tree Frog is a good example. With its bright green body, red eyes, and orange feet, it is one of Costa Rica’s most recognizable small creatures. Photographing subjects like these also gives you a chance to slow down and think differently about composition. And sometimes, the smaller the subject, the more interesting the photograph becomes.

A Photographer’s Playground
One of the best things about Costa Rica is the variety. In a single trip, you can photograph wildlife, birds, macro subjects, landscapes, seascapes, people, and culture. You can be looking for a monkey in the rainforest one moment and photographing a fisherman or surfer the next.
Our Costa Rica Photo Adventure is designed around making the most of these opportunities. We visit photogenic locations with an eye toward the best light, but the goal goes beyond simply finding beautiful places.
We also spend time learning how to visualize a scene before pressing the shutter, work with the environment around us, and turn an ordinary image into something more personal and interesting.

Come See Costa Rica for Yourself
There are many reasons to visit Costa Rica, but for photographers, the sheer variety is hard to beat. There is the wildlife. The birds. The rainforest. The Pacific coast. The tiny creatures hiding among the leaves. And the people and everyday scenes that make the country feel like more than just a wildlife destination.
Our 7-day Costa Rica Photo Adventure takes us to the San José area and the Osa Peninsula, where we have the opportunity to explore, photograph, learn, and simply enjoy being surrounded by nature.
