Casa Palopó: One of Guatemala’s Finest Hotels on Lake Atitlán
Guatemala stands out as one of Central America’s most diverse destinations. Mayan heritage, lush coffee plantations, dramatic volcanoes, and coastlines along both the Pacific and Caribbean shape the country’s character. Culture, history, and nature come together here in remarkable ways.
The colonial city of Antigua sits in the central highlands and remains filled with beautifully preserved architecture from the Spanish era. Not far away lies Lake Atitlán, a vast crater lake surrounded by three towering volcanoes. Many consider it one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It is along these peaceful shores that we find our hotel of choice in Guatemala — Casa Palopó.

Private Luxury on the Shores of Lake Atitlán
Casa Palopó began as a private residence overlooking Lake Atitlán. Today it operates as an intimate 15-room luxury hotel and is the only property in Guatemala that belongs to the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection.
The hotel sits high on a steep hillside, giving it sweeping views across the lake and toward the surrounding volcanoes. From nearly every terrace, balcony, or poolside lounge chair, the scenery feels spectacular.
The property suffered damage from a cyclone in 2005, which led the owner to rebuild and expand the estate. After reopening as a nine-room boutique retreat, the resort continued to grow and reached fifteen rooms by 2017.
Recognition soon followed. Casa Palopó earned a place among the Top Hotels in Central America in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, and Travel + Leisure ranked it among the region’s best resort hotels.

Designed for Rest and Quiet
Everything about Casa Palopó encourages you to slow down. You will not find televisions in the rooms. WiFi is available if you wish to stay connected, though many guests quickly forget about their devices once they settle into the calm rhythm of the lake.
Two pools overlook the water and volcanoes, creating perfect places to relax. Lounge chairs line the terraces and pool decks, inviting you to sit back with a drink or simply enjoy the view.
Spa treatments can be arranged in your room or at the small treatment space on site. The Martini Bar offers another pleasant place to end the day, especially as the sun sets behind the volcanoes.
The name Atitlán comes from the Mayan language and means “the place where the rainbow gets its colours.” Casa Palopó reflects that spirit throughout the property. Rooms feature bright colours, traditional textiles, Mayan artefacts, and antiques from the region. Original artwork decorates the walls, and fresh calla lilies appear throughout the hotel.

The Private Villa
Beyond the main house sits a private three-suite Villa. It rests further up the hillside and can be reached by a 150-step cobblestone path. Guests may walk the route or request a quick ride by golf cart.
The Villa suites can be reserved individually or together as a private residence. Interiors feature calmer tones with a modern feel, while large terraces frame the views across the lake.
Guests staying in the Villa enjoy access to a full kitchen, a private infinity pool, and a hot tub. When all three suites are reserved together, the stay includes a dedicated butler service. And yes, the property even has its own helicopter pad.

Local Food with Global Influence
Dining takes place at the hotel’s restaurant, 6.8 Palopó. The executive chef prepares Guatemalan-inspired dishes with international influences.
Ingredients come from farms and producers around Lake Atitlán, which keeps flavours fresh and seasonal.
A few favourites include the Santiago salad, the Santa Catarina scallops, and the crème brûlée with chilacayote, a traditional regional squash.
