The Algilà Ortigia Charme Hotel is located on the ancient “Mastra Rua”. Dating back to the 14th century, this street was where the most important noblemen of the city lived. The refined historic building that houses the hotel is the result of the fusion of two buildings. The recent restoration preserved the original structure, creating an intriguing distribution of the rooms that is fascinating.
The restoration was overseen by architect Manuel Giliberti who reused all of the original details such as stone, arches and carved keystones. Where necessary, they were combined with new materials using the same techniques used centuries ago, mainly local limestone which influenced the baroque style architecture in the region. The details, based on old Sicilian designs were then integrated, like the wooden ceiling of the room that is now the restaurant, which was restored using only a few of the original boards that survived. Sicily is a place where local craftsmen and artists continue to work using many of the traditions from past centuries.
The interior decor of the Algilà consists of antique furnishings, precious brightly-painted ancient Sicilian ceramics, and stunning textiles utilizing beautiful warm colors. Obsessive care was given to hiding any signs of modern technology. The result is a harmonious atmosphere of comfort and design that will play an important part in your Sicilian experience.
