Reverie and Revelry at the Venice Carnival.
Our 7-day Venice Carnival Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure invites you into a world of elaborate masks, Venetian elegance, and centuries-old celebration. In Venice, Carnevale unfolds as a spectacle of artistry and atmosphere, where lavish costumes, hidden alleyways, candlelit canals, and grand piazzas create a dreamlike stage for photography. Unlike the exuberant energy of Rio Carnival, Venice Carnival is defined by its refinement and theatrical mystery. It is a celebration where beauty, tradition, and intrigue blend seamlessly, offering photographers endless opportunities to capture moments filled with color, emotion, and timeless charm.
The origins of the Venice Carnival date back to the Middle Ages, when the leader of the Republic of Venice, Vitale Michiel II, celebrated victory over the Patriarch of Aquileia in 1162. Citizens gathered in jubilation in St. Mark’s Square, sparking an annual tradition that flourished for centuries until 1797, when Austrian rule brought both the festival and the wearing of masks to an abrupt end. Carnevale faded into obscurity until its revival in 1979, when the Italian government restored the celebration as part of an effort to preserve Venice’s rich cultural heritage.
On our photo adventure, we’ll slip through narrow backstreets and glide along canals by gondola, arriving at grand masked balls held inside centuries-old palazzos and candlelit plazas. We’ll photograph elegantly costumed guests from around the world against the romantic backdrop of Venice itself—capturing moments where history, fantasy, and theatricality seem to merge. Venetian harlequins in diamond-patterned costumes mingle beside lace-clad courtesans and noble figures draped in velvet capes, each scene offering a striking blend of color, texture, and storytelling.
At the heart of it all are the legendary Venetian masks. Once used to conceal identity and erase distinctions of social class, these masks infused the festival with an atmosphere of secrecy and intrigue. Through our lenses, we’ll search for la maschera più bella—the most beautiful mask—discovering dazzling combinations of ribbons, beads, feathers, sequins, and painted porcelain. In dramatic contrast, we’ll also encounter the haunting plague doctor masks, with their long hooked beaks rooted in Venice’s darker history and folklore.
Beyond the grandeur of Carnevale, we’ll also explore the quieter side of Venice. Away from the crowds and lavish celebrations, we’ll photograph working boatyards, open-air markets, and neighboring fishing communities, revealing a more intimate and timeless rhythm of daily Venetian life.
This 7-day photography tour is more than an opportunity to capture extraordinary images—it’s an invitation to deepen your creative vision and strengthen your visual storytelling. Our experienced photographer guides will lead you to the most photogenic locations under the best possible light, while helping you refine your technical skills, anticipate decisive moments, and transform ordinary scenes into compelling works of art.
Through inspiring discussions, shared experiences, and unforgettable moments in one of the world’s most visually captivating cities, you’ll leave with far more than photographs. The Venice Carnival is a breathtaking celebration of artistry, mystery, and imagination—a true dream for photographers. Your visual odyssey begins here.

ITINERARY
VENICE CARNEVALE PHOTO TOUR – 7 DAYS
Early Arrival
We suggest arriving one or two days early. You can book early arrival rooms with us.
During Venice Carnival, we’ll spend our mornings and afternoons photographing Venice in its most beautiful light—from the iconic Grand Canal to the city’s quieter hidden corners and atmospheric backstreets.
Our favorite moments, however, will undoubtedly be capturing the extraordinary Carnevale participants dressed in elaborate and decadent costumes. Some portrait sessions may be carefully pre-arranged, while others will unfold spontaneously as we wander through the city. The final days of Carnevale are the most spectacular, when Venice transforms into a living stage of color, mystery, elegance, and theatrical beauty.
Day 1 | Venice
We’ll meet at our hotel in Venice where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles, and techniques.
In the evening light, combined with the glow of street lamps, we will capture the elaborate masks and costumes in an even more dramatic way. We will look for reflections in the canals or on the wet cobblestones for an extra layer of depth. After that, we will celebrate with a “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants. (D)
Day 2 | Rialto Markets - Arsenal - Grand Canal
We’ll set out in the early morning hours and explore the smaller canals of Venice. Cross the famous 16th-century bridge and walk to the centuries-old open-air fish and produce markets checking out the meat, cheese, and specialty-food shops.
We will then visit the Arsenal, a vibrant testament to the rich history of the Serenissima Republic of Venice! Spanning 48 hectares on the eastern edge of the Ancient City, it was once the bustling hub where majestic ships were crafted, showcasing the city’s remarkable economic, political, and military strength. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Venice’s glorious past.
Afterward, we’ll take a Traghetto (gondola ferry) across the Grand Canal. (B)
Day 3 | Piazza San Marco - Grand Canal - Rialto
We will start early and head to Piazza San Marco! We’ll set up our gear to capture amazing photos of people in costume, adjusting our flash and camera settings as the beautiful sunrise unfolds.
We will continue with a gondola tour of Venice. Yes a “tour”, and a very touristy thing to do, but a must when visiting Venice. Later, we will have the opportunity to focus on photographing the Grand Canal and the gondola’s of Venice. We’ll also use this time to explore the more photographic opportunities along the Grand Canal.
In the afternoon and evening, we will focus on low light photography near the Rialto Bridge. (B)
Day 4 | Authentic Venice - Cannaregio - San Pietro di Castello
We’ll wander beyond the main tourist sights and explore the quieter, more authentic side of Venice. Without rushing from landmark to landmark, we’ll immerse ourselves in the city’s hidden rhythm—discovering the sunlit canals and peaceful corners of Cannaregio, the boatyards and neighborhood life of San Pietro di Castello, and the maze-like streets of Santa Croce.
Along the way, we’ll cross centuries-old bridges—each with its own story and name—notice faded emblems and details etched into historic facades, and wander through alleyways so narrow you may need to turn sideways to pass through them. These quieter moments often reveal the true character of Venice and offer endless opportunities for intimate street photography and atmospheric storytelling.
In the afternoon, we’ll return to the hotel for a well-deserved rest before continuing our Venetian adventure later in the day. (B)
Day 5 | San Giorgio Maggiore
San Giorgio Maggiore, located just across from St. Mark’s Square, offers some of the most breathtaking views in all of Venice. The bell tower provides an extraordinary panorama over the lagoon and city rooftops—without the long crowds often found elsewhere. We’ll explore and photograph the island in its finest light, including the elegant Palladian church that houses The Last Supper by Tintoretto.
In the evening, we’ll turn our attention to the enchanting Grand Canal. Using long-exposure techniques, we’ll capture the glowing reflections, illuminated facades, and timeless atmosphere that make Venice so unforgettable after dark. As the city lights shimmer across the water, we’ll create striking images filled with mood, elegance, and the unmistakable magic of Venice at night. (B)
Day 6 | Burano and Murano
With the festivities of Venice Carnival behind us, we’ll set out early in the morning by boat to explore the neighboring islands of Burano and Murano. Though small in size, these islands offer a completely different atmosphere from central Venice and are well worth the journey across the lagoon.
Burano, with its brightly painted fishermen’s houses reflected in the canals, feels like stepping into a painter’s palette. Every corner offers vibrant compositions, making it a dream location for photographers seeking color, texture, and everyday life.
Nearby, Murano tells a different story. Originally a fishing port that later became known for salt production and trade, the island rose to prominence in the late 13th century as the legendary center of Venetian glassmaking. Venetian artisans relocated their furnaces here because the intense heat posed too great a fire risk to the wooden buildings of Venice itself. Today, Murano remains synonymous with extraordinary craftsmanship and centuries of artistic tradition.
Upon returning to Venice, we’ll gather for a memorable “Farewell Dinner” at one of our favorite Venetian restaurants—an evening to celebrate the images, experiences, and friendships created throughout our time together. (B) (D)
Day 7 | Venice
On our final day, we’ll gather after breakfast for a final group discussion and review of the images created throughout the week. Together, we’ll reflect on the highlights of our journey, exchange contact information, and celebrate the experiences and friendships formed along the way before bidding you farewell.
We encourage you to extend your stay in Italy and continue putting the techniques, creativity, and visual storytelling skills you’ve developed during this unforgettable photo adventure into practice. (B)
(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion
