Citizens gathered in jubilation in St. Mark’s Square, sparking an annual tradition that flourished for centuries until 1797, when Austrian rule brought both the festival and the wearing of masks to an abrupt end. Venetian harlequins in diamond-patterned costumes mingle beside lace-clad courtesans and noble figures draped in velvet capes, each scene offering a striking blend of color, texture, and storytelling.

Once used to conceal identity and erase distinctions of social class, these masks infused the festival with an atmosphere of secrecy and intrigue. Through our lenses, we’ll search for la maschera più bella—the most beautiful mask—discovering dazzling combinations of ribbons, beads, feathers, sequins, and painted porcelain. In dramatic contrast, we’ll also encounter the haunting plague doctor masks, with their long hooked beaks rooted in Venice’s darker history and folklore.
