Tea Plantations, Trains, and Spice-Scented Towns in Sri Lanka.
On our 12-day Sri Lanka Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure, you will find yourself climbing a 1,500-year-old Kashyapa temple, chatting with Tamil fishermen, and sipping a Ceylon brew with tribespeople in the misty highlands. Sri Lanka is an island paradise shaped by thousands of years of cross-cultural influence, where English sailors, Dutch traders, and Portuguese spice merchants once called the island home, leaving behind a rich colonial legacy that makes this tea-scented spice island a historical treasure. Set in the Indian Ocean off the coast of South Asia, Sri Lanka is a place where the original soul of Buddhism continues to flourish and where nature’s beauty remains abundant and largely unspoiled. This magical island, once known as Serendib, Taprobane, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, and Ceylon, offers an unforgettable blend of culture, history, spirituality, and breathtaking landscapes.
We begin and end our Sri Lanka photo adventure in Colombo, the vibrant capital of Sri Lanka. This bustling port city is a fascinating balancing act between tradition, modernity, progress, and hardship. It is said that nearly half of Colombo’s residents live in informal settlements or housing deemed unsuitable for human habitation. With this in mind, we’ll begin our journey by photographing the city’s slum communities, where dusty makeshift streets and corrugated-roofed homes stand in stark contrast to the surrounding urban skyline, highlighting the growing disparity within the capital. Equally energetic is Pettah Market, where stalls overflow with spices, fabrics, and tropical fruits while the surrounding streets pulse with daily life and endless photographic opportunities.
From Colombo, we’ll travel south to Galle, an exotic coastal city once at the heart of the spice trade, particularly cinnamon, and still rich with traces of its European colonial past. Here, we’ll photograph Dutch architecture with terracotta roofs and whitewashed walls, while observing skilled female artisans practicing the traditional Portuguese craft of Beeralu lace making, their hands delicately weaving intricate patterns into fine threads. At golden hour, we’ll capture the iconic stilt fishermen along the shoreline, framing their elegant silhouettes against the warm colors of the setting sun.
Our journey will also take us inland to the lush tea country of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. The town of Ella is surrounded by mist-covered tea plantations, cascading waterfalls, thick forests, and emerald hillsides. Among the rolling tea bushes, we’ll photograph the tea leaf pluckers dressed in colorful saris and headscarves, carrying baskets strapped to their backs as they carefully harvest fragrant leaves. We’ll also visit the famous Nine Arches Bridge, timing our photography to capture the iconic blue train as it winds gracefully through the lush valleys.
After Ella, we’ll board a scenic train to Kandy, often considered the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. The city holds deep spiritual significance as home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, known locally as Sri Dalada Maligawa. This sacred temple houses a relic believed to be a tooth of the Buddha, one of the most revered objects in Buddhist tradition and Sri Lankan culture. Our cameras will focus on the pilgrims and worshippers who travel from near and far to witness the temple’s daily rituals and ceremonies. In Dambana, we’ll spend time photographing the indigenous Vedda communities, considered the island’s original inhabitants and known as the “people of the forest.” Here, we’ll observe traditional hunting, fishing, and foraging practices while striving to capture the deep connection between the Vedda people and the natural world.
This immersive 12-day photography tour is far more than a journey to capture remarkable images; it is an opportunity to elevate your craft and experience the world through a new perspective. Our expert photographer guides will lead you to the most photogenic locations under the best possible light while helping you develop the art of visual storytelling. Along the way, you’ll refine your technical skills, learn how to navigate the challenges of photographing in a foreign country, and discover how to anticipate and capture decisive moments that transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary images. Join us for spirited discussions, enriching camaraderie, and unforgettable moments of inspiration. Few destinations offer photographers such a rich combination of dramatic landscapes, vibrant culture, spiritual depth, and unique experiences within such a compact island as Sri Lanka. Your visual odyssey begins here!

ITINERARY
SRI LANKA PHOTO TOUR – 12 DAYS
Day 1 | Colombo - Usavi Watta
We’ll begin our adventure by meeting in the lobby of our beautiful hotel in Colombo, where we’ll have group introductions and discuss the exciting journey ahead. During lunch, we’ll talk about our individual photographic styles, preferred subjects, techniques, and experience levels, while also discussing what to expect over the coming days and how we can best achieve our photographic goals together.
Located on the west coast of this beautiful island nation, Colombo is the vibrant commercial hub of Sri Lanka. Positioned along the historic East–West maritime trade route, the city is home to the country’s largest and most important port. Colombo’s harbor has a fascinating history, becoming the capital under British rule in 1815 and remaining so until Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. Today, the city reflects a remarkable blend of races, religions, and cultures shaped by centuries of colonial influence. Colombo showcases both the beauty and the struggles of the country, where elegant mansions, lush gardens, upscale shopping centers, and fine dining stand side by side with crowded streets, urban slums, and bustling local markets.
With this contrast in mind, we’ll spend the afternoon exploring one of Colombo’s slum communities. Accompanied by our trusted local guide and fixer, who knows the neighborhood intimately, we’ll safely immerse ourselves in an environment that reveals another side of the city. It is believed that nearly half of Colombo’s residents live in informal settlements or housing considered unsuitable for human habitation. Here, we’ll interact with local residents, photograph environmental portraits, and document the realities of daily life through respectful and meaningful storytelling. After what will surely be an emotional and thought-provoking experience, we’ll return to our hotel before gathering for a memorable “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Sri Lankan restaurants. (D)
Day 2 | Colombo - Pettah Market - Gangaramaya Temple
We’ll begin early by wandering through the streets of Pettah Market, one of the busiest and most energetic areas in Colombo. This sprawling marketplace is a fascinating blend of small shops, bazaar-style stalls, street vendors, branded outlets, and remarkable religious landmarks. The gridlocked streets of Pettah are vibrant, chaotic, and best explored on foot, with each street traditionally dedicated to a different trade. Everywhere we look, there will be endless sensory experiences and photographic opportunities. We’ll observe shoppers carefully examining richly embroidered wedding saris, merchants displaying colorful fabrics and garments, and traders selling everything from handbags and school supplies to gifts and household goods. The constant movement, textures, colors, and interactions make Pettah a remarkable location for documentary and street photography.
Afterward, we’ll transfer to one of Colombo’s largest Buddhist temples, Gangaramaya Temple. Once inside the temple grounds, the noise and intensity of the city seem to disappear completely. In the evening, as monks chant and pray beneath the sacred Bodhi tree, a deep sense of tranquility settles over the temple complex. Located beside Beira Lake in the heart of the city, the temple was established in 1885 by Venerable Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera and has gradually expanded into the impressive complex seen today. It includes the Vihara (monastery), Cetiya (pagoda), Vihara Mandiraya (Image House filled with colorful Buddha statues), Seema Malaka, the Bodhi Tree, the Relic Chamber, as well as a library and museum. At the far end of the courtyard, rows of elevated Buddha statues in Thai style rise gracefully against the skyline, creating striking photographic compositions.
In the evening, we’ll once again turn our attention toward another side of Colombo as we photograph some of the city’s slum communities located not far away. Hundreds of informal settlements line the riverbanks, railway tracks, and garbage dumps throughout the capital, forming some of the most densely populated neighborhoods in the city. Nearly a quarter of Colombo’s residents are considered informal settlers. These communities reflect a much larger global reality, as the United Nations estimates that roughly a quarter of the world’s urban population lives in slums, a number that continues to rise rapidly. While Colombo’s rich cultural heritage draws visitors to its historic sites, some travelers also seek to understand the city’s social contrasts and inequalities through a more authentic lens. Despite the hardships many residents face, the people we meet are often incredibly warm, welcoming, and hospitable. They are frequently open to conversation, eager to interact, and happy to participate in photographs, creating meaningful opportunities for respectful documentary storytelling and human connection. (B)
Day 3 | Colombo - Ambalangoda - Galle
We’ll depart Colombo and journey south toward Galle. Along the way, we’ll begin to witness the enduring traditions and cultural heritage of old Ceylon. In the southern province lies Ambalangoda, a town renowned throughout Sri Lanka for its traditional masks and devil dancing rituals. Colorful, expressive, and intricately handcrafted, these masks are far more than decorative objects; they represent an important and fascinating aspect of authentic Sri Lankan culture.
As we immerse ourselves in the world of traditional masks and ritual performances, we’ll discover that the region is known for three distinct styles of masks and ceremonies. Kolam masks are used in satirical folk dramas dating back to the Colonial Era, Raksha masks appear in festivals and ceremonial processions, and Sanni masks are worn during traditional devil dances believed to ward off illness-causing spirits. We’ll spend the day exploring Ambalangoda and meeting the talented artisans who continue to craft the famous “devil masks” by hand, preserving techniques passed down through generations. These masks are still used in ritual performances held in villages throughout the countryside. In the afternoon, we’ll continue on to Galle, where we’ll settle in for the evening. (B)
Day 4 | Galle Exploration - Stilt Fishermen
Galle is endlessly exotic, filled with the scent of spices and salty ocean winds, yet also distinguished by its remarkable collection of Dutch colonial architecture and timeless beauty. Here, classic European design blends seamlessly with a dramatic tropical setting to create an atmosphere that is endlessly captivating. Above all, Galle has long been a city of trade and, increasingly, a center for art and creativity. Today, the historic fort area is lined with boutique shops, cafés, and hotels owned by local and international artists, writers, photographers, designers, and poets. Built by the Dutch beginning in 1663, the 36-hectare Galle Fort occupies most of a promontory surrounded on three sides by the Indian Ocean. Simply wandering its narrow streets and ancient walls reveals one architectural surprise after another, with beautifully preserved buildings spanning centuries of history. Its extraordinary cultural significance has earned the fort designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Afterward, we’ll visit a traditional Beeralu lace-making workshop, an intricate craft inherited from the Portuguese and still practiced today by only a small number of women within the fort. At the Sipnara Handicrafts Centre, women both young and old gather around individual beeralu kotte (lace pillows), carefully weaving delicate lace patterns under the guidance of experienced artisans. We’ll have the opportunity to observe this disappearing art form up close and even try our hand at the craft ourselves under their watchful instruction. As this centuries-old tradition slowly fades, witnessing it firsthand becomes a meaningful and memorable experience.
Before dinner, we’ll head to the beach to photograph the iconic stilt fishermen at sunset, while also capturing scenes of local vendors, beachgoers, and everyday coastal life bathed in the warm evening light. (B)
Day 5 | Galle - Ella
We’ll begin with an early morning drive from Galle to Ella, where you’ll experience the breathtaking beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Nestled among endless green tea plantations, Ella is a small and picturesque highland village that offers a slower, more peaceful rhythm of life. It is a place where drifting clouds, rustling forests, slowly chugging trains, and vibrant butterflies create an atmosphere that feels almost dreamlike. Most travelers quickly fall in love with Ella’s enchanting surroundings and often wish they could stay far longer than planned.
The photographic opportunities here are truly extraordinary. We’ll have the chance to capture sweeping landscapes, rolling tea plantations, dramatic mountain ranges, railway scenes, and warm interactions with the incredibly friendly local people. We’ll also walk through the tea estates, photographing the famous “Tea Leaf Plucker Ladies” and plantation workers as they go about their daily routines. The tea-covered hills provide endless panoramic views across the surrounding countryside, while the nearby forests, waterfalls, and mist-covered horizons create a true paradise for landscape photography.
One of the major highlights of our time in Ella will undoubtedly be photographing the iconic Nine Arches Bridge, also known as the Demodara Nine Arches Bridge. Located about a 35-minute walk from Ella Railway Station, this remarkable colonial-era bridge was constructed entirely without steel reinforcement and remains an impressive engineering achievement. We’ll photograph the bridge from a variety of unique perspectives, ideally timing our shoot to capture the famous blue train as it passes through the lush green valley. Nearby, the Ella Railway Station itself offers wonderful opportunities to document a “classic train station” atmosphere where time seems to stand still. If we’re fortunate, we may even photograph the station master and staff dressed in their crisp white colonial-style uniforms, complete with hats and ties — a tradition that has remarkably endured through the decades.
To end the day, we’ll photograph sunset from Little Adam’s Peak, overlooking the dramatic mountain landscape and distant views toward Adam’s Peak. And, in true PWA tradition, we’ll finish the evening by enjoying delicious traditional Sri Lankan cuisine at one of Ella’s local restaurants. (B)
Day 6 | Ella - Nuwara Eliya
We’ll rise early to photograph sunrise and soak in as much of Ella as possible before departing this magical highland retreat. After our morning shoot and breakfast, we’ll head back into town for one final opportunity to capture the village atmosphere before reluctantly saying farewell to Ella.
Later in the morning, we’ll board the train to Nuwara Eliya, one of the most scenic railway journeys in Sri Lanka. During the ride, there will be endless opportunities to photograph local passengers, passing landscapes, misty tea plantations, and small hillside train stations along the route. Since the train travels at a leisurely pace, we’ll have excellent opportunities to stand at the open doors and enjoy uninterrupted views of the breathtaking countryside unfolding before us. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Nuwara Eliya, where we’ll check into our hotel and enjoy a relaxing dinner together. (B)
Day 7 | Nuwara Eliya
After breakfast, we’ll visit a tea plantation before continuing with a city tour of Nuwara Eliya. Known for its cool, refreshing climate, Nuwara Eliya has long been regarded as a hill country retreat that attracts both Sri Lankan visitors and international travelers. The town is famous for its colonial charm and leisurely atmosphere, with activities such as golf tournaments, horse racing, motor cross events, clay pigeon shooting, and seasonal carnivals contributing to its unique character.
Sri Lanka is also one of the world’s leading tea exporters, and since tea was first introduced to the island in the mid-19th century, Nuwara Eliya has remained at the heart of the country’s tea industry. Long before reaching the town, we’ll witness endless rolling tea estates stretching across the hillsides as far as the eye can see. Throughout the day, we’ll photograph plantation landscapes, tea workers, colonial-era architecture, and scenes of daily life that define this beautiful region. In the evening, we’ll gather together to review and discuss our images from the day. (B)
Day 8 | Nuwara Eliya - Kandy - Mahiyangana
After an early breakfast, we’ll check out and travel to Kandy. While in Kandy, we’ll visit the sacred Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, known locally as Sri Dalada Maligawa. Located within the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, this revered Buddhist temple houses what is believed to be a tooth relic of the Buddha. For centuries, the relic has held deep political and spiritual significance, as it was believed that whoever possessed the relic held the rightful governance of the country.
Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, largely because of the temple’s immense cultural importance. Daily worship ceremonies are conducted by Bhikkhus from the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters within the temple’s inner chamber. Rituals take place three times each day — at dawn, noon, and evening — creating remarkable opportunities to photograph devotion, spirituality, and tradition. On Wednesdays, a symbolic bathing ritual known as Nanumura Mangallaya is performed using scented water and fragrant flowers. The holy water from this ceremony is believed to possess healing powers and is distributed among worshippers in attendance.
After our time in Kandy, we’ll continue to Dambana, where our focus will shift toward photographing the indigenous Vedda communities and their unique cultural heritage. The Vedda, whose name translates to “people of the forest,” are considered the island’s original inhabitants, with a history that predates Prince Vijaya’s arrival in the 5th century BC and the origins of the Sinhala race. Archaeological evidence suggests that the ancestors of today’s Vedda people inhabited the island as far back as 10,000 BC.
Once spread across the plains and mountains of central Sri Lanka, the remaining Vedda population is now largely concentrated around Dambana near the Maduru Oya National Park. Traditionally hunter-gatherers, many aspects of their lifestyle have remained remarkably unchanged from ancient times. The Vedda people speak an ancient dialect related to Sinhala, and their traditional way of life revolves around hunting, fishing, foraging, and collecting wild honey, which they often trade with nearby villagers for tools and cloth. During our visit, we’ll respectfully document their customs, traditions, and connection to nature through meaningful portraiture and cultural storytelling. (B)
Day 9 | Mahiyangana – Meemure - Sigiriya
After an early breakfast, we’ll check out and travel to Sigiriya via the remote village of Meemure. Often described as one of Sri Lanka’s hidden natural treasures, Meemure remains largely untouched due to its isolated location and rugged terrain. The area is a remarkable blend of pristine wilderness, traditional village life, and ancient cultural heritage. Surrounded by dense evergreen forests and fed by countless waterfalls, the village rests within the breathtaking landscapes of the Knuckles Mountain Range. To the east rises the pyramid-shaped Lakegala Mountain, while the dramatic Knuckles Range dominates the western horizon. To the north lies forest stretching toward the famous Pitawala Pathana grasslands, while the Heen River forms the southern boundary of the region.
Reaching Meemure is an adventure in itself. The journey begins from Hunnasgiriya, a mountain settlement within the Knuckles Range located roughly 50 kilometers from Kandy. The winding 33-kilometer route to the village is rugged and challenging, though the scenery along the way is extraordinary. For generations, pack bulls served as the only method of transportation into Meemure, carrying goods such as salt, cloth, tobacco, and other essentials into the isolated community. Although modern roads now allow access by small vehicles and jeeps, the village has still managed to preserve much of its traditional character and way of life.
The lifestyle of the villagers reflects a deep connection to nature and sustainability. Many homes are still constructed using clay and illuk grass, traditional building materials that can last for decades. One of the village’s most unique features is its boundary walls built entirely from quartz stone. Throughout our visit, we’ll have opportunities to photograph the dramatic landscapes, waterfalls, traditional homes, and the daily lives of villagers who continue to live in harmony with their natural surroundings. Later in the evening, we’ll arrive in Sigiriya and check into our hotel. (B)
Day 10 | Sigiriya - Polonnaruwa
After an early breakfast, we’ll visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable archaeological and cultural treasures. Our focus throughout the day will be on photographing the city’s compelling ancient architecture, Buddhist temples, temple complexes, monuments, monks, devotees, and the everyday spiritual life that continues to surround these sacred sites.
Among the highlights will be Gal Vihara, originally known as Uttararama, a magnificent rock temple famous for its beautifully carved Buddha statues sculpted directly into granite rock. We’ll also visit the Polonnaruwa Vatadage, an ancient circular relic house believed to have been built either during the reign of King Parakramabahu I to house the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, or later during the reign of Nissanka Malla to protect the Buddha’s alms bowl. The intricate stone carvings, moonstones, and symmetrical architecture offer extraordinary photographic opportunities.
In the afternoon, we’ll explore the legendary ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. Located near the town of Dambulla, Sigiriya rises dramatically nearly 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding plains. This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned for its caves, ancient frescoes, landscaped gardens, and extraordinary archaeological significance. As we photograph the fortress and surrounding landscapes, we’ll have opportunities to capture both the grandeur of the site itself and the lush scenery that surrounds it. After dinner, we’ll gather together to review and discuss our images from the day. (B)
Day 11 | Sigiriya - Anuradhapura - Colombo
The ruins of Anuradhapura are among the most evocative and historically significant sites in South Asia. This sprawling ancient complex contains an extraordinary collection of archaeological and architectural treasures, including enormous dagobas (brick stupas), sacred pools, monasteries, and centuries-old temples built during Anuradhapura’s thousand-year reign as the capital of Sri Lanka. Unlike the quieter, museum-like atmosphere of Polonnaruwa, many of Anuradhapura’s sacred sites remain active places of worship today, with ceremonies, pilgrims, monks, and devotees bringing a vibrant spiritual energy to the city.
Today, Anuradhapura serves as the capital of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province and is widely regarded as the cradle of Buddhism on the island. Covering more than 40 square kilometers, its vast network of Buddhist temples, monasteries, and religious monuments has made it one of the most sacred destinations in the Buddhist world. Despite its immense historical importance, modern-day Anuradhapura still retains the atmosphere of a quiet town surrounded by ancient wonders. From towering stupas and sacred shrines to massive man-made reservoirs, the city reflects an astonishing level of engineering, artistry, and spiritual devotion. The monumental dagobas and temples, among the greatest architectural achievements of their era, have often been compared in scale and ambition to the great pyramids of Giza.
Beyond its temples and monasteries, one of Anuradhapura’s greatest achievements was its sophisticated irrigation system. Vast rainwater reservoirs, constructed through the labor of countless workers and elephants, transformed the region into a thriving agricultural center capable of sustaining the island’s rice cultivation for centuries. Many of these ancient tanks have since been restored and continue to provide water to local farmers today, standing as a lasting testament to the ingenuity of Sri Lanka’s early civilizations.
After completing our exploration of Anuradhapura, we’ll return to Colombo, the vibrant urban center where our journey first began. In the evening, we’ll gather together for a memorable “Farewell Dinner” at one of Colombo’s finest restaurants, celebrating the experiences, friendships, and photographs shared throughout our adventure. (B) (D)
Day 12 | Colombo
After breakfast, we’ll gather one final time to exchange contact information, share memories from the journey, and bid you farewell. Our driver will escort you to the airport in time for your departing flight. We encourage you to extend your stay elsewhere in Asia and continue putting into practice all the photographic techniques and creative inspiration you’ve gained throughout our photo adventure. (B)
