From Grit to Glamor: Naples & The Amalfi Coast.

Join us on our 8-day Naples & the Amalfi Coast Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure for a journey that blends the unruly charm of a historic port city with the shimmering beauty of Italy’s most celebrated coastline. Naples is Italy’s third-largest city and one of its oldest, most artistic, and most delicious. At first glance it may feel chaotic and weathered, yet beyond the layers of grime and graffiti lies a city rich with breathtaking frescoes, sculptures, sweeping panoramas, and captivating street life, where spontaneous conversations and everyday moments reveal profound humanity.

Our adventure begins in the historic center of Naples, a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with some of Europe’s finest archaeology and art. Its collection of royal palaces and castles is so impressive it makes Rome seem almost provincial by comparison. We’ll wander through the maze-like streets of the Spanish Quarter, where laundry lines stretch between buildings and graffiti-covered walls add a contemporary layer to centuries-old architecture. These narrow alleys and lively piazzas provide endless opportunities to photograph passionate Neapolitans going about their daily lives and sharing animated conversations at outdoor cafés.

Naples also serves as the gateway to legendary archaeological sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, both frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Walking these preserved streets feels like stepping into another era. Here we’ll photograph visitors reacting to the haunting plaster casts of residents captured in their final moments, adding a surreal and poignant dimension to our photographic storytelling.

On our way toward the stunning Amalfi Coast, we’ll pause in the breathtaking hill town of Ravello—a place so beautiful it almost feels unreal. Sweeping sea vistas, cliffside villas, and meticulously landscaped gardens create scenes that feel sculpted by the hands of ancient gods. From there we’ll continue to the dazzling villages of the Amalfi Coast, where colorful towns cascade down cliffs toward cerulean waters. Among them is Positano, famous for its pastel buildings seemingly suspended between sea and sky. In 1953, John Steinbeck described Positano as “a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” Through our cameras, we’ll attempt to capture that same enchanting quality.

Our journey continues with a boat ride to the glamorous island of Capri, long favored by stylish travelers and romantic dreamers alike. The island offers exceptional opportunities for people-watching and candid photography. Equally mesmerizing is the famous Blue Grotto, where luminous blue light fills the cavern in an otherworldly display. Photographing this surreal seascape is a simple yet powerful experience that contrasts beautifully with the fashionable spectacle unfolding above ground.

This immersive eight-day photography journey is more than an opportunity to capture remarkable images—it’s an invitation to elevate your craft and see the world through a new lens. Our expert photographer guides will lead you to the most photogenic locations under the best light while helping you refine the art of visual storytelling. Along the way, you’ll strengthen your camera skills, learn how to navigate the challenges of photographing in a foreign environment, and develop the ability to anticipate scenes before capturing the decisive moment—transforming ordinary images into extraordinary works of art.

Expect inspiring discussions, shared discoveries, and moments of genuine camaraderie throughout the journey. From the raw urban energy of Naples to the timeless elegance of the Amalfi Coast, this adventure will leave you deeply enchanted by the treasures of southern Italy. Your visual odyssey begins here!

ITINERARY

NAPLES & AMALFI COAST PHOTO TOUR – 8 DAYS

Day 1 | Historic Naples

We’ll meet in Naples at our beautiful hotel, centrally located near the port in the heart of the historic city. Founded between the 7th and 6th centuries BC by the Greeks, the port was originally named Neapolis, meaning “New City.” Today, the historic center of Naples is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of the largest historic city centers in the world and boasts an astonishing 448 historic and monumental churches—the highest number found in any single city.

We’ll begin our journey with an introduction to PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography,” along with our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic approach. Over a relaxed group lunch, we’ll also have informal discussions about what each guest hopes to achieve with their photography, exploring personal subjects, styles, and techniques.

Afterward, we’ll set out for an inspiring afternoon of photography throughout the historic districts of Naples, where centuries-old streets, lively piazzas, and everyday Neapolitan life provide endless opportunities for compelling images.

In the evening, we’ll gather to celebrate our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Neapolitan restaurants.

One friendly warning: come hungry, because the food in Naples is unforgettable, and you may very well return home a few pounds heavier. (D)

Day 2 | Spanish Quarter - Castel dell’Ovo - Piazza del Plebiscito

On day two, we’ll explore the historic Spanish Quarter and several other neighborhoods of Naples. These lively streets offer a wonderful opportunity to photograph the raw character of the city—its grit, its color, and the vibrant personalities of local residents and shop owners going about their daily routines.

In the afternoon we’ll visit Castel dell’Ovo, the oldest castle in Naples, with origins dating back to 117 BC. Perched on the small island of Megaride and extending into the Bay of Naples, the castle stands on the legendary site where the siren Parthenope is said to have washed ashore after throwing herself into the sea when she failed to lure Odysseus with her song. According to legend, the city’s earliest name Partenope, was inspired by this mythical figure.

Another enduring legend surrounds the Roman poet Virgil. It is said that he hid a magical egg beneath the castle, placing it in a glass jar sealed within an iron cage. As long as the egg remained safe and unbroken, the city of Naples would remain protected. Of course, the story contains a small flaw—Virgil lived long before the castle itself was constructed, but the tale continues to add mystery to this historic site.

In the evening, we’ll head to Piazza del Plebiscito to photograph the warm glow of the late setting sun. With the grand façade of the Basilica Reale San Francesco di Paola rising in the background, the square becomes a beautiful stage for long-exposure photography and dramatic compositions. (B)

Day 3 | Procida - Naples

We’ll depart to the harbor of Naples by hydrofoil ferry for the volcanic island of Procida in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Located at the northern edge of the Gulf of Naples, about 25 kms from Naples, this small island offers a wonderfully authentic slice of Italian coastal life.

We’ll spend the day exploring and photographing the many visual treasures of Procida, from narrow seaside lanes and quiet fishing villages to its iconic harbor, where pastel-colored homes cascade down toward the water. It’s the kind of place where every corner reveals another compelling composition, perfect for practicing observation, color, and storytelling through photography.

In the late afternoon, we will return to Naples for some well-earned rest. As evening arrives, we’ll head back out to explore the city’s vibrant night atmosphere and indulge in two of its most beloved traditions—world-famous Neapolitan pizza and rich Italian gelato. (B)

Day 4 | Pompeii - Herculaneum - Castel Sant’Elmo

After an early morning breakfast, we will depart Naples to photograph the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

In AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted catastrophically, burying Pompeii beneath 13–20 feet of ash and pumice. The city remained lost for nearly 1,700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1749. Today it offers an extraordinary window into daily life in the Roman world, where streets, frescoes, and homes still echo with the stories of the past.

Often overshadowed by its larger neighbor, Herculaneum holds an equally remarkable wealth of archaeological treasures. From ancient advertisements and intricate mosaics to carbonized wooden furniture and the haunting remains of those who tried to escape the eruption, this superbly preserved Roman fishing town, once home to about 4,000 inhabitants, feels both intimate and deeply moving. Its compact layout also makes it easier to explore and photograph, offering countless details waiting to be discovered.

In the afternoon, we’ll ride the funicular up to Castel Sant’Elmo for sweeping sunset views overlooking Naples. From this elevated vantage point, the city unfolds beneath us—its historic streets, shimmering harbor, and the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius glowing in the fading light. A perfect way to close another inspiring day behind the lens. (B)

Day 5 | Naples - Ravello - Amalfi

We’ll bid farewell to Naples and set out along one of Italy’s most breathtaking coastlines—the Amalfi Coast.

Along the way, we’ll stop for lunch in the beautiful hilltop town of Ravello, perched about 1,200 feet (365 meters) above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Long celebrated for its tranquil atmosphere, terraced gardens, and sweeping coastal views, Ravello has inspired artists, writers, and travelers for generations.

We’ll visit the magnificent Villa Rufolo, a 13th-century Moorish-style villa whose terraced gardens open onto extraordinary views of the coastline below. The villa also hosts indoor and outdoor performances during the renowned Ravello Festival each summer. Nearby, we’ll explore the equally enchanting Villa Cimbrone, a medieval-style estate perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop and surrounded by one of the most celebrated gardens in Italy.

From Ravello we’ll continue our journey with the exhilarating 4.4-mile (7 kms) drive down the winding Valle del Dragone toward Amalfi. The descent is thrilling, with breathtaking coastal vistas around nearly every turn—offering plenty of opportunities for unforgettable photographs.

By afternoon, we will arrive in Amalfi and check into our hotel. In the evening, we’ll stroll through the harbor and historic streets before gathering for a relaxed dinner to celebrate our first night on the Amalfi Coast. (B)

Day 6 | Coastal Cruise - Isle of Capri - Faraglioni

On day six, we’ll depart Amalfi by boat for the legendary island of Capri. The cruise along the Amalfi Coast is itself an epic photographic opportunity—revealing nearby islands, tiny coastal villages, and unforgettable views of Positano rising dramatically from the sea. Soon the limestone cliffs of Capri appear on the horizon. This enchanting island has long been a favorite retreat for Roman emperors, artists, writers, and the world’s jet set, and it remains one of the Mediterranean’s most captivating destinations.

Weather permitting, we’ll cruise along the island’s eastern coastline to photograph its dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and the iconic Faraglioni rising from the turquoise waters. Capri is perhaps best known for the famous Blue Grotto, but the truth is that the entire coastline is so spectacular it’s difficult to choose a favorite side of the island.

Once ashore, we’ll enjoy lunch in the charming Piazzetta di Capri, perched high above Marina Grande. If time allows, we’ll explore more of the island before returning by boat to Amalfi for dinner and a well-deserved evening of rest after a remarkable day along one of Italy’s most beautiful islands. (B)

Day 7 | Sorrento - Positano

On our last full day, we’ll travel to the beautiful coastal town of Sorrento, perched high above the sea and offering sweeping views across the Bay of Naples. Set on a tufa terrace and framed by dramatic limestone cliffs, Sorrento provides a wonderful setting for a relaxed morning of photography followed by a hearty lunch.

Afterward, we will return along the breathtaking Amalfi Coast to the iconic seaside village of Positano, where we will spend the afternoon and evening exploring and photographing its colorful hillside streets and cascading homes above the sea.

In 1953, John Steinbeck famously wrote of Positano: “It bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” Once you experience it, the meaning of those words becomes beautifully clear.

Here, we will gather for our “Farewell Dinner”, celebrating the memories, friendships, and photographs created throughout the journey. Later in the evening, we’ll return to Amalfi for a well-deserved rest after an unforgettable adventure along Italy’s spectacular southern coast. (B) (D)

Day 8 | Amalfi - Naples

On our final morning in Amalfi, we’ll rise early for an optional sunrise photography session—perfect for those who still have the energy to capture the soft morning light along the Amalfi Coast.

Afterward, we return to the hotel for breakfast and gather for our final group discussion. We’ll review favorite images from the week, share reflections from the journey, exchange contact information, and celebrate the friendships and photographs created along the way.

Later, we depart for Naples, where we will bid you farewell. If time allows, we warmly encourage you to extend your stay along the beautiful Amalfi Coast or continue exploring other corners of Italy—putting to good use all the creative techniques and ways of seeing you’ve developed throughout this unforgettable photographic adventure.
