ANDALUSIA | ZARAGOZA | BARCELONA

Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba, Costa del Sol, Zaragoza and Barcelona

Where stunning Architecture, magical Spanish Tradition, and Street & People Photography await you.

We begin our special-edition Three Amigos Spain 12-day photo tour in Seville, Spain, where you’ll get to travel with PWA photographers Laurie Cohen, Michael Chinnici, and Roman Martin. While traveling together, you’ll be rotating on and off with each leader for an enjoyable hand enjoyable experience. We’ll begin in Andalusia (the South of Spain), and then moving on to Zaragoza in the north and ending in Barcelona.

ANDALUSIA
Andalusia is a dream come true for any travel photographer looking for nature, architecture, landscapes, seascapes, people and more. This large autonomous region of hills, rivers, and farmland bordering Spain’s southern coast, is breathtaking in so many ways. It was under Moorish rule from the 8th-15th centuries, a legacy that shows in its stunning architecture, including such landmarks as the Alcázar castle in Seville, the capital city, as well as Córdoba’s Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral and Granada’s Alhambra palace.

The Costa del Sol – from posh Puerto Banús to the port of Málaga – forms a near-continuous beachfront strip along the Mediterranean. Inland are the whitewashed mountain villages of Las Alpujarras in the Sierra Nevada, and Jerez de la Frontera, which produces sherry. That fortified wine complements the seafood-based cuisine of Andalusia, which is known as the birthplace of gazpacho.

We begin Andalusia in Seville and then move on to Jerez, Medina-Sidonia, Parque Natural Los Alcornocales, Marbella, Costa del Sol, Granada and Cordoba.

It also should be noted that we’ll be visting the South of Spain just weeks before the famous Semana Santa (Easter Week) festival which will provide us opportunities to photograph the festival preparations that will be underway.

ZARAGOZA
Our two days in Zaragoza, the capital of Spain’s Aragon region, will be a wonderful contrast to Andalusia. We’ll begin with a journey to the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, capturing the reflections of this baroque masterpiece on the waters of the Ebro River at sunrise. The warm morning light complements the elaborate facade and domes, offering a breathtaking view against the backdrop of a clear sky.

Next, we’ll explore the Aljafería Palace, a stunning example of Islamic architecture from the 11th century, showcasing intricate stucco work, elegant arches, and peaceful courtyards. The play of light and shadow through its archways offers a serene and contemplative atmosphere, perfect for capturing the essence of Moorish influence in Spain.

The Cathedral of the Savior (La Seo) reveals a mix of architectural styles, from Gothic to Baroque, reflecting the city’s rich history. The detailed exteriors and the vibrant stained glass windows create an awe-inspiring sight, capturing the spiritual heart of Zaragoza.

Wandering through the ancient streets of El Tubo, you’d immerse yourself in the bustling life of Zaragoza’s most famous tapas area. The narrow lanes, lined with bars and restaurants, offer a colorful tapestry of local life, with opportunities to photograph the vibrant culinary scene and the joy of communal dining.

As evening falls, the bridges over the Ebro River, such as the Puente de Piedra and the modern Puente del Tercer Milenio, offer panoramic views of the city. The setting sun casts golden hues over the river, creating a picturesque scene with the city’s landmarks silhouetted against the twilight sky.

Throughout the tour, the changing light, from the soft hues of dawn to the dramatic colors of sunset, provides a dynamic backdrop to Zaragoza’s architectural wonders, vibrant street scenes, and the tranquil beauty of its riverbanks. Each photograph taken tells a story of the city’s rich heritage, its lively culture, and the natural beauty that surrounds it, making your photo tour an unforgettable journey through the heart of Aragon.

BARCELONA
Barcelona is one of our favorite destinations due to its abundance of photo opportunities; Barcelona is one of Europe’s premier destinations for the global traveler and one of the first destinations incorporated by PWA. While many associate Barcelona with its Modernist architecture, and in particular works created by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, there is so much more to offer the photographer seeking to create candid, spontaneous images out on the street. Likewise, thanks to wonderful backgrounds for adding context, environmental portraits play a large part in our shooting experience.

For street photographers, Barcelona will not disappoint. Thanks to an open and friendly society, the locals are some of the most engaging subjects found anywhere in the world. The city is home to a multi-cultural society while also proudly retaining its Catalan traditions. From tattoo-clad youngsters on skateboards to market traders sharing kind words with elders, Barcelona offers an extraordinary insight into the lives of its residents. Each neighborhood has a unique footprint, though they somehow manage to harmonize.

Wandering around the various districts, it quickly becomes apparent how diverse the various classes and backgrounds of the locals really are, yet all call this dynamic, vibrant, and engaging city, home. Likewise, the contrast from wide-open boulevards to the labyrinth of tiny pedestrian streets makes for the most wonderfully photogenic contextual backgrounds. The right light is vital to illuminate our subjects, and the itinerary has been carefully designed to capture scenes according to their location during optimal lighting conditions.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than Spain!

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

THREE AMIGOS SPAIN 12 DAYS

Day 1 | Seville - Plaza de España

We begin our special-edition Three Amigos 12-day photo tour in Seville, Spain, where you’ll get to travel with PWA photographer’s Laurie Cohen, Michael Chinnici, and Roman Martin (4 guests per leader). While traveling together, you’ll be rotating on and off with each leader for a truly fun and enjoyable experience. We’ll begin in Andalusia (the South of Spain), and then moving on to Zaragoza in the north and ending in Barcelona.

In day one we’ll meet in our hotel, where we’ll discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. From here we will set out for a wonderful day of architectural, people and fine art photography throughout Seville.

Seville is the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region. It’s famous for flamenco dancing, particularly in its Triana neighborhood. Major landmarks include the ornate Alcázar Castle complex, built during the Moorish Almohad dynasty, and the 18th-century Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza bullring. The Gothic Seville Cathedral is the site of Christopher Columbus’s tomb and a minaret turned bell tower, the Giralda. We’ll cover all on days one and two.

In the evening we celebrate with our Welcome Dinner at one of our favorite Spanish restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Seville - Royal Alcázar - Catedral de Sevilla

We set out early to capture Seville as the city awakens. After a morning of street photography we set our sights on The Alcázar of Seville. A royal palace built for the Christian king Peter of Castile. It was built by Castilian Christians on the site of an Abbadid Muslim residential fortress destroyed after the Christian conquest of Seville. Adjacent to the Alcázar is The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, better known as Seville Cathedral. It was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

After lunch we will continue our adventure through the city capturing its amazing Arabic and Spanish architecture. In the evening we will be treated to a flamenco dance while dining. (B)

Day 3 | Jerez - Medina-Sidonia - Parque Los Alcornocales - Marbella

On day three we depart Seville and drive south toward the Mediterranean Sea. Our first stop will be Jerez, more formally known as “Jerez de la Frontera”. Its old quarter surrounds the Alcázar de Jerez, a Moorish fortress founded in the 11th century. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is a famed riding school with horse shows and a carriage museum. The city is also known for flamenco music and sherry production in the so-called Sherry Triangle lying to the west.

Next is a little gem called Medina-Sidonia. An unspoiled, ancient white-washed hilltop town, little-known despite its important history. The town was one of Spain’s most important ducal seats in the 15th century; producing an admiral who led the Spanish Armada against England. The title of Duque de Medina Sidonia was bestowed upon the family of Guzmán El Bueno, of the Tarifa siege, for his valiant role in taking the town. It is considered by some to be the oldest city in Europe, used as a military defense location due to its elevation.

On our way to Marbella, we will drive through the mountains of Parque Natural Los Alcornocales. Once in Marbella, a seaside resort village on the Costa del Sol, we will check into our hotel. We’ll spend the evening taking in the Spanish Riviera. Just west of Marbella is the Golden Mile, consisting of prestigious nightclubs and coastal estates. This leads to Puerto Banús marina, filled with luxury yachts, and surrounded by upscale boutiques, bars and restaurants. (B)

Day 4 | Costa del Sol - Granada

After sunrise and breakfast we will depart for Granada, perhaps one of the best know cities in Southern Spain. En route we’ll hug the coast, better known as the Costa del Sol where we’ll stop to capture some seaside villages. You’ll love this region of Spain.

Granada is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s known for grand examples of medieval architecture dating to the Moorish occupation, especially the Alhambra. This sprawling hilltop fortress complex encompasses royal palaces, serene patios, and reflecting pools from the Nasrid dynasty, as well as the fountains and orchards of the Generalife gardens. We’ll check-in and begin exploring the magnificent city. (B)

Day 5 | Granada - Alhambra - Nasrid Palaces

We are up early so we can enter the Alhambra as it opens. To help put Alhambra in perspective, everyone agrees that the Alhambra in Granada is one of the most magnificent buildings the human race has ever created, so much so that it was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984 by UNESCO. The Alhambra was a palace, a fortress and a citadel; the residence of the Nasrid Sultans and top government officials, court servants and the royal guard. We’ll spend the morning exploring Alhambra and the Nasrid Palaces. Opulent Moorish-style courtyards, reception halls & royal quarters are at the heart of the Alhambra.

There is actually so much to see and photograph in Granada that you could spend almost one week here. So if you like it, you will surely return. (B)

Day 6 | Cordoba - Mosque of Córdoba

We’ll depart right after breakfast for our drive west to Cordoba. Cordoba was an important Roman city and a major Islamic center in the Middle Ages. It’s best known for La Mezquita, an immense mosque dating from 784 A.D., featuring a columned prayer hall and older Byzantine mosaics. After it became a Catholic church in 1236, a Renaissance-style nave was added in the 17th century. Also known as the Great Mosque of Córdoba and the Mezquita, whose ecclesiastical name is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is the Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

We’ll focus on some street photography in the late afternoon hours. After a well-deserved rest, we enjoy a wonderful dinner with our group on our last night in the South of Spain. (B)

Day 7 | Cordoba - Zaragoza - El Tubo

After an early breakfast we depart Cordoba by train for Zaragoza, the capital of Spain’s Aragon region. After lunch and our hotel check-in, we begin exploring the rich tapestry of street photography opportunities, including its bustling tapas bars, narrow streets and alley’s, charming facades, intricate balconies, and traditional shopfronts.

Zaragoza’s tapas scene is legendary, and El Tubo is at its heart. We’ll enjoy dinner right in the heart of El Tubo. As the sun sets, El Tubo transforms under the glow of street lights and neon signs of bars and restaurants. This change in ambiance provides a different mood to capture, highlighting the area’s nightlife and energy. Musicians, artists, and performers often grace the streets of El Tubo, adding a layer of cultural richness to the area. These performances provide dynamic subjects for street photography, capturing the arts scene in Zaragoza.

El Tubo offers a microcosm of Zaragoza’s culture, architecture, and lively street scenes, making it an ideal destination for street photographers seeking to capture the essence of Spanish city life. (B)

Day 8 | Zaragoza

Day 9 | Zaragoza - Barcelona - Encants - Raval

We depart Zaragoza in the morning by train for Barcelona. It’s a quick 1.5 hour ride. After our hotel check-in we’ll enjoy a Catalonian lunch.

We’ll spend the afternoon visting Encants and Raval. Encants is one of the oldest flea markets in the world, it has been running continuously since the 14th Century. Until 2013, traders would lay out their wares in a chaotic mess in a designated open area. Since then, the market has been transformed into one of Europe’s most impressive buildings. This purpose-built 3-storey structure has a roof like nowhere else. Set at different angles, an amazing mirrored canopy covers 500 stalls, a mix of antiques, books, ornaments, clothes, furniture, and just about every item of junk you can think of. This location makes for a great location of photographing the locals in a wonderfully photogenic location. The flea market makes up part of Sant Marti – the district with the most recent urban development and transformation of the former industrial area of Poblenou.

After, we will visit the Raval – Barcelona’s oldest district. Situated on the south side of the Ramblas, the Raval was located within the city walls until they were knocked down in 1859 as the city began to expand. In contrast to the Eixample neighborhood with its perfectly placed octagonal buildings, tree-lined boulevards, and Bentleys parked in front of top-designer stores, the Raval is typically known for its large-scale immigration, poverty, and other social issues. Unsurprisingly, this makes the Raval probably the top location for street photography in the city. Laundry-clad facades line winding, narrow streets. Graffiti seems to be everywhere, as are the amazing photo opportunities.

One of our favorite hangouts is outside the MACBA [Modern Art Museum]. An open plaza with pedestrians passing through, skateboarders come to meet and practice their skills in front of the glass facade. Behind this building, you will explore another great spot where people add scale to an impressive blend of classical and modern architecture at the CCCB [Barcelona Centre of Contemporary Culture]. But just wandering around the residential areas, searching for directional lighting at the numerous intersections, composing little elderly ladies in front of urban decay as they come back with their groceries from the market to a friendly chat before photographing tattoo-covered subjects that are often willing to oblige to be photographed – the Raval is the kind of location that you can return to time and again. (B)

Day 11 | Barcelona - Gothic Quarter - La Boqueria - La Ribera

On day eleven, we start early at the Gothic Quarter during the morning Golden Hour. This district is especially beautiful at this time of day when the light makes the wonderful stone architecture glow. Deep shadows and directional lighting create depth and atmosphere. These types of backgrounds are best suited without crowds of people but rather picking out individuals when they pass into pockets of light at the decisive moment. Historical documents claim the true history of Barcelona began right where the Gothic Quarter stands today because this is where the Romans laid claim to the land and built their first settlement, which was fortified by the addition of a thick wall that rose to a full 60 feet and boasted 78 towers. Within the Gothic Quarter lies the old Jewish Quarter [known locally as El Call], and is notable for containing the oldest Synagogue in Europe. As well as housing the Santa Eulalia Cathedral dating back to the 13th Century, the Gothic Quarter retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into quaint open Plazas. The Gothic Quarter is undoubtedly Barcelona’s most photogenic section of the city.

When the light gets harsh, we will head to the famous La Boqueria market at the Ramblas. Local farmers have been trading here since as far back as 1217. Initially a meat market, by the 14th Century, farmers sold their products here that were grown around the villages surrounding Barcelona. Today, it stands as one of the world’s premier markets with its excellent scope of quality local and international gastronomic products. Apart from the enormous variety of fresh products on offer, there are some excellent tapas bars located here. It’s not every day that you see people dining as a butcher passes by with a Jamon slung over his shoulder. As the light is lower inside the market, it is also a great place to practice adding movement to our shots. The fun, dynamic, and lively Boqueria Market is an excellent location for environmental portrait photography.

Making use of the wonderful light during the afternoon Golden Hour, we will wander through La Ribera and explore the labyrinth of cramped residential areas. La Ribera is one of the areas of the quarter of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i La Ribera of Ciutat Vella [the Old City]. This is the perfect area to go over the various camera techniques and settings that we have learned to date. Due to the fast-paced nature of street photography, deciding which settings to use and consequently navigating around the camera quickly means there is a lot to learn. We aim to simplify the process and help you take control of the camera, as well as show you the importance of patience, predicting a scene, engaging with your subject, and being confident in your surroundings.

In the evening, we celebrate the conclusion to our Three Amigos Photo Tour with a wonderful “Farewell Dinner”, fit for a Spanish King and Queen. (B)(D)

Day 12 | Barcelona

After an early morning street photography walk, we’ll return to our hotel for breakfast and bid you farewell.

We urge you to extend your stay in Barcelona or elsewhere in Spain and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)
