BUENOS AIRES
Puerto Madero, La Boca, San Telmo, Colonia, and the San Antonio de Areco Gaucho Festival
Buenos Aires: Barrios, Basilicas, Bailarines and Gauchos
Our 9-day Buenos Aires Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure includes two days at the San Antonio de Areco Gaucho Festival, where we will explore and photograph traditional Argentinian culture and rural life.
In Buenos Aires, you will experience a passionate and dynamic city that’s always on the move. Like the Tango, Buenos Aires is captivating, seductive, and bustling with elegant energy. Argentina, the eighth-largest country in the world, is renowned for its heavy European influence with a Latin flair. Buenos Aires, the vibrant heart of this nation, is a visual wonderland, from the eclectic La Boca “barrio” to the haunting beauty of Recoleta Cemetery.
Much of our photo trip involves neighborhood hopping, where each barrio has its signature flavor. La Boca is a clash of colors at every turn: houses and shacks are painted with every bright hue imaginable, and you will notice surreal paper mache figures peering out the windows. The walls are also plastered with colorful street art, an ode to the gritty legacy of the working-class population that called this place home. The tango dancers who pound their heels on the cobblestone streets and glide through the narrow alleyways make this neighborhood even more dynamic.
From La Boca, we will wander along to San Telmo, Buenos Aires’ oldest neighborhood, and stroll through history. With its Italian colonial facade, the San Telmo market came to fruition to cater to the wave of European immigrants whose culture has shaped the city. Our cameras will hunt for timeless treasures and antiques, from vintage clothing to old cameras, furniture to jewelry, and the expressive faces of the vendors that flog these curious collectibles.
If La Boca is famous for color and San Telmo for history, Recoleta is the barrio of angels. The Recoleta Cemetery is a must-visit attraction for photographers wanting to capture this sprawling labyrinthine city and an open-air museum that honors the dead. Our task will be to encapsulate its quirky yet moving mish-mash of mausoleums, sculptures, and graves of all different heights, sizes, and styles, from Gothic to baroque to Greek-like temples.
Easing off from cityscapes and urban photography, three days to the San Antonio de Areco Gaucho Festival offers rich photographic opportunities, especially for capturing authentic Argentine culture. The town’s charming colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and historic estancias provide picturesque landscape and architectural photography settings. The Gaucho culture is at the heart of the town. San Antonio de Areco is a treasure trove for photographers seeking to document Argentina’s rich cultural heritage.
Finally, on a brief detour across borders, we will visit Colonia de Sacramento in Uruguay, one of the oldest towns in South America and an hour away from Buenos Aires by Ferry. Abundant with old-world charm, picture old city walls, aged buildings, a quaint central plaza, and a sweet little white-washed lighthouse.
This 9-day photography tour is more than just a quest to capture exceptional images; it’s an invitation to elevate your craft and see the world through a new lens. Our expert photographer guides will not only lead you to the most photogenic locations under the best light but also help you master the art of visual storytelling. Along the way, you’ll refine your camera techniques and discover how to navigate the challenges of photographing in a foreign land. You’ll also learn to anticipate a scene before capturing the decisive moment, elevating ordinary photos into extraordinary works of art.
Join us for spirited discussions, enriching camaraderie, and moments of unforgettable inspiration. Buenos Aires’ vibrant neighborhoods, passionate tango scenes, Groucho’s in the countryside, and layers of cultural influences will take you on both an emotional and visual journey. Your photographic odyssey starts here!

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
BUENOS AIRES 9 DAYS
Day 1 | Buenos Aires - Puerto Madero
Welcome to BA! We meet in our hotel lobby in the morning and begin by discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” and our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. At lunch, we’ll have informal discussions on what our guests want to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles, and techniques. After lunch, we begin our photo walk and explore Buenos Aires.
We begin with May Square, where we will find the Cabildo, where Argentina’s first revolution occurred in 1810. Next, we’ll photograph the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral, officially called the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, where the body of General Jose de San Martin (leader of several South American revolutions and independence movements) is guarded by two “Granados.” We’ll also see the Presidential Palace (A.K.A. “Pink House”). Nearby is Café Tortoni, a very traditional and old Café established in 1858.
We will walk to Puerto Madero, which has tall, modern buildings, and photograph Magic Hour. This area along the river includes the “Puente de la Mujer” bridge (by Arch. Calatrava). Our day concludes with a “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Argentine restaurants. (D)
Day 2 | La Boca - San Telmo - Tango Dancers
On day two, we depart to explore the famous area of La Boca, which is full of colorful houses and tango dancers around every corner. We’ll also explore San Telmo, where we’ll find charming narrow streets, San Telmo Market, and the Palace of San Telmo before stopping for lunch at a favorite local restaurant.
We’ll begin our afternoon walking along the widest avenue in the world, the Avenida 9 de Julio, where the famous landmark of Buenos Aires, the Obelisk, stands. In the late afternoon, we’ll focus on a tango session. Surrounded by vibrant Caminito colors, we will have exclusive access to a professional tango dance couple posing just for us, with a change of costumes, make up, and professional clothes.
We’ll return to our hotel through the city’s pedestrian shopping streets, perfect for people-watching and admiring the culture and urban parks nearby. Dinner at another favorite restaurant. (B)
Day 3 | Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay)
Uruguay is just a one-hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires, so today, we’ll spend our day on the other side of the Rio de la Plata in Colonia del in Sacramento, Uruguay (remember your passports). One of South America’s oldest towns, Colonia offers an incredible glimpse into the history of this quaint cobblestoned town along the water. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to the oldest street in Uruguay and its oldest church, dating back to 1695.
We’ll stroll around this walkable town, photographing the colonial buildings, and can even climb to the top of the lighthouse for incredible views of the town. We will enjoy lunch at a traditional Uruguayan restaurant before continuing our stroll through the town and taking the ferry back to Puerto Madero for the remainder of the evening. (B)
Day 4 | Delta Of Tigre
A short drive from Buenos Aires, we will find the lovely district of Delta Of Tigre, surrounded by rivers and delta islands. We will take a Catamaran and sail around the main rivers and islands. After, we’ll stop for lunch at one of the traditional English-style boat clubs.
In the afternoon, we will explore the traditional “Mercado de Frutos” (Fruit Market). During sunset and magic hour, we will photograph the Fluvial Station, which has plenty of vintage urban boats. (B)
Day 5 | San Antonio de Areco Gaucho Festival
After breakfast, we’ll depart for the annual Gaucho Festival in S. Antonio de Areco, check in to our hotel, and enjoy lunch. We’ll spend the afternoon at the festival watching and photographing several activities with horses and gauchos and sunset in the fields doing some gaucho portraits.
San Antonio de Areco offers rich photographic opportunities, especially for capturing authentic Argentine culture. The town’s charming colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and historic estancias provide picturesque landscape and architectural photography settings. The Gaucho culture is at the heart of the town, and photographing the Gauchos in their traditional attire, often featuring wide-brimmed hats, bombachas (baggy trousers), and botas (boots), is a unique opportunity.
The streets come alive during the festival with vibrant parades, horse-riding events, and folk music performances, offering dynamic scenes full of color and movement. The local markets and artisan workshops also allow for close-up shots of traditional crafts like silverwork, leather goods, and ponchos. The surrounding pampas, with their expansive grasslands and grazing horses, provide a serene backdrop for capturing the essence of the Gaucho lifestyle. Overall, San Antonio de Areco is a treasure trove for photographers seeking to document Argentina’s rich cultural heritage.
In the evening, we’ll settle in and enjoy a local dinner. (B)
Day 6 | San Antonio de Areco Gaucho Festival
We’re up early for a sunrise shot by the old bridge and river. After breakfast, we’ll head to the festival to photograph gauchos and horses.
We’ll experience traditional “Pulperías”—old shops and bars where local gauchos used to go to drink or eat. We’ll walk around the town and look for gauchos playing games like “taba” or other activities. We’ll also visit the silver ateliers, where we will shoot portraits of the artisans working the silver. The opportunities will seem endless.
In the late afternoon through sunset, we’ll have the opportunity to return to the fields to take portraits of gauchos, some with their horses and women dressed in traditional attire. A famous Argentinian barbecue in the evening helps round out the day. (B) (D)
Day 7 | Buenos Aires
We’ll start the morning with more festival activities, attend horse races, and experience folklore dancing. We’ll enjoy lunch in a friendly “Parrilla.”
By lunch, we’ll say goodbye to San Antonio de Areco and return to Buenos Aires. We’ll spend the afternoon reviewing photos and a casual evening in the city. (B)
Day 8 | Recoleta - Palermo Soho - Palermo Hollywood
On day eight, we set out to explore the sights and take in the culture of the barrio of Recoleta. Our primary focus will be the world-famous Recoleta Cemetery, which is a sight to see. We will photograph the beautiful gravestones and see Evita’s famous grave before strolling through Recoleta’s streets and the nearby parks before lunch.
For lunch, we will set out to Palermo Soho, home to many restaurants, bars, boutiques, coffee shops, and an exciting and recent graffiti/ street art area around Serrano Square. After taking in the culture of Palermo Soho, we will visit “3 de Febrero Park,” where we will find a giant rose garden in Victorian style.
We celebrate with our “Farewell Dinner” in the evening and discuss the week’s events and amazing photo opportunities. (B) (D)
