MADRID & CASTILE LEON

Madrid, Old Madrid, Salamanca, Segovia and Ávila

Transport yourself back in time and capture the magic of Spain.

Our Madrid and Castile Leon Photo Adventure includes Madrid, Old Madrid, Segovia, Ávila and Salamanca.

Old Madrid is steeped in history and charm, and one of our favorite cities. It is full of interesting sights and spectacular architecture, tapas bars, churches and plazas. It’s interesting to note that Madrid’s population had scarcely reached 20,000 when it was chosen as the capital in 1561, which probably explains why it feels so comfortable shooting there. Our Madrid adventure consists of a beautiful array of architectural, street, people and cityscape photography. You will not be disappointed.

After Madrid we move on to the Castile Leon region of Spain. With its magnificent historic city of Segovia, and its Roman aqueduct of Segovia, probably built c. A.D. 50, is remarkably well preserved. This impressive construction, with its two tiers of arches, frames the setting for Segovia. Other important monuments include the Alcázar, begun around the 11th century, and the 16th-century Gothic cathedral. We’ll also visit Ávila and its superbly preserved 11th century walls, punctuated with its 88 cylindrical towers, and the nearby gardens of the palace of  La Granja de San Ildefonso. And finally Salamanca, a city of rare beauty, awash with golden sandstone overlaid with ochre-tinted Latin inscriptions, an extraordinary virtuosity of Plateresque and Renaissance styles. All of these cities are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the amazing cities of Madrid and Salamanca!

ITINERARY

MADRID & CASTILE LEON 7 DAYS

Day 1⎢Old Madrid - Puerta del Sol

We meet at our hotel in Madrid where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques.

From here we will set out for a wonderful day of architectural, people and fine art photography throughout Old Madrid. There is so much to absorb throughout this small Madrid neighborhood. So much so that the visual assault is even overwhelming at times. We will explore the neighborhoods that include the famous Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol.

In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Spanish restaurants. (D)

Day 2⎢Retiro - Museo Nacional del Prado - Botanical Gardens

Today we explore some of the oldest neighborhoods in Old Madrid. We spend most of the day photographing great architecture, gardens, graffiti, street performers and shop owners.

We’ll visit the Plaza San Miguel market which has been a haven for Madrid’s homemakers and servants since the early 19th century. The iron-and-glass Mercado opened in May 1916, and was eventually abandoned after years of disrepair, but now it’s been beautifully restored and includes 33 merchants. This is just one example of the many types of interesting places we will explore. The Spanish are an extremely warm and proud people, making photographing Madrid all the more enjoyable.

In the afternoon we will photograph the Retiro neighborhood which includes the Parque del Retiro, Museo Nacional del Prado and Botanical Gardens. In the evening we will venture out to photograph the lighting of the buildings, which Madrid does so well. (B)

Day 3⎢Las Cortes - Atocha - Lavapiés - Grand Via

On day three we are up early to photograph the neighborhoods of Lavapiés, Las Cortes as well as the Atocha train station. Las Cortes is a small district that holds the lower house of the Spanish parliament and several other government buildings. Atocha train station is a beautiful piece of architecture and worth a peek and grab a few photographs.

Lavapiés has a deep history. It was the Jewish quarter of the city until the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, the church of San Lorenzo being built on the former site of the synagogue. Today Lavapiés is a poor neighborhood consisting mainly of immigrants. In the evening we will venture out again to photograph the Grand Via at sunset. (B)

Day 4⎢La Latina - Opera - Royal Palace

Today we visit La Latina. In and around this area are the origins of Madrid. Here we will find the churches of Iglesia de San Andres and Iglesia de San Francisco el Grande. We work our way to the other side, where La Latina borders with Plaza Mayor and another ancient part of the town, Los Austrias, where you can find the beautiful Palacio Real (Royal Palace).

A visit to the Royal Palace is optional, but stepping into its adjacent Cathedral is a must. Before dinner we photograph the sun setting behind the Royal Palace. (B)

Day 5⎢Segovia - Salamanca

On day five we checkout early and drive north to the magnificent city of Segovia for an enjoyable morning of photography. Here we will witness one of the most well preserved Roman aqueducts and the world, as well as the old village and the Spanish fortress of Alcázar of Segovia.

Segovia is indicative of a complex historical reality. Its neighborhoods, streets, and houses are laid out in accordance with a social structure consisting of different cultural communities. Moors, Christians and Jews coexisted for a long time in the medieval city and worked together during the 16th century manufacturing boom. All the component parts of the built environment, from domestic architecture to the great religious and military structures, can be found in Segovia in a broad range of construction techniques and styles.

After lunch we hit the road for our drive to Salamanca. After checking in we photograph this amazing city at sunset from across the river. (B)

Day 6⎢Salamanca

On day six, we explore Salamanca and all it has to offer. Salamanca is a city of rare beauty, awash with golden sandstone overlaid with ochre-tinted Latin inscriptions, an extraordinary mix of Plateresque and Renaissance styles.

Whether bathed in the light of sunset or floodlit by night, there’s something magical about Salamanca. You’ll be fascinated by the mass of monumental buildings assembled in the city center including three Cathedrals, the University founded in 1218, Plaza Mayor, museums and more. The energy of the massive Spanish and international student population provides the city with so much youth and vitality.

After a well deserved late afternoon rest, we prepare for our wonderful Spanish “Farewell Dinner”, with great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Day 7⎢Salamanca - Ávila - Madrid

After an early breakfast we depart Salamanca for our return to Madrid. On our way back we make a stop in Ávila, best known for its famous walls built in Romanesque style. Ávila’s old city, surrounded by imposing city walls comprising eight monumental gates, 88 watchtowers and more than 2500 turrets, is one of the best-preserved medieval bastions in all Spain. By late morning we are ready to return to Madrid, have our final group discussion, trade contact information and bid you farewell.

We urge you to extend your stay in Madrid or elsewhere in Spain and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)
