Istria Croatia Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

What is so special about Istria? It is a peninsula which looks like it had fallen asleep in the past. Its medieval towns on the hills defy time as if they were built yesterday. Beautiful sunlit valleys are ideal for grape and olive growing. White and black truffles are found only in a couple of locations in Italy and Istria. Istria guarantees you an unforgettable gastronomic and oenological delight. Convince yourself why ex Yugoslavia president Tito had chosen Brijuni Islands for his residence when he hosted the biggest personalities from politics and showbiz. Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Carlo Ponti, Gina Lollobrigida have visited these beautiful islands. Small towns in the coastal area were built in the time of Roman empires and are full of valuable historical buildings. So when all things are considered as a whole, our tour will be a delight for all your senses not only for your eyes and camera.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia!

ISTRIA CROATIA 6 DAYS

Sunday (1)  Rovinj

We meet on Sunday morning in Rovinj at our hotel. We start the day off discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “The Art of Seeing” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we have informal discussions on what the guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. From here we will set out for a day of photography throughout the picturesque Mediterranean town of Rovinj. Rovinj’s life started on what used to be the island of Mons Albanus. The first archeological traces of life date back to the Bronze Age, and the old city started developing in the 3rd century. You will walk true narrow streets and small squares and visit the Old town, Port of Rovinj and Saint Euphemia Church where we will climb the bell tower to get spectacular views. We will then take photos of the narrow houses and characteristically built chimneys which are a special feature of the old city. The old city was proclaimed a monument of culture in 1963. In the early evening we will celebrate the groups arrival with a “Welcome Dinner” at a local tavern. This town will be a wonderful place to wrap up the day before we head back to the hotel. (D)

Monday (2)  Pula - Brijuni National Park

On day two we wake up early to leave Rovinj and head south to Pula to see the beautiful Roman Arena. The amphitheater is located approximately 200 meters to the northeast outside of the city walls of Pula, in accordance with the Roman land division grid. It is believed that construction works began during the period of Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD), and that they were financed by funds from the central state treasury of the Roman imperial government. We will stay in the center of Pula to see more Roman Empire monuments and than we will leave Pula and go to Brijuni Island National park by boat. On Brijuni Island we will ride by tourist train, visit the remains of the Roman villa rustica from the 1st century B.C. in the bay of Verige, and the safari park which breeds the following animals: zebra, Somali sheep, zebu (the holy east Indian humped ox), dromedary, llama etc. Here you have the opportunity to learn and capture wild animals in their natural environment and you will feel like you are on a safari in Africa. The tour also includes visits to the archaeological museum located in the Citadel building from the XVI century and the Church of St. Germain with a permanent exhibition of copies of frescoes and Glagolitic writings from Istra. This concise curriculum vitae of the island, which carefully preserves traces of 5000 years of human history. Beautiful landscapes are ideal for photographs with the CPL filters, so we will learn how to use them. (B)

Tuesday (3)  Hum - Motovun

On Tuesday we drive into the center of the Istria peninsula to visit the middle age town Hum, which is the smallest town in the world. It has a population of only 24 people and there is no way to lost. A beautiful small cathedral and the small town are an ideal place for shooting and will take you 1000 years back in the history. Then we will continue to Motovun, which is a medieval town that grew up on the site of an ancient city called Kastelijer. It is situated on a hill 270 metres (886 feet) above sea level with houses scattered all over the hill. On the inner walls are several coats-of-arms of different Motovun ruling families and two gravestones of Roman inhabitants (dating from the 1st century). Here you get the opportunity to work with contrast and wider dynamic ranges, in addition to practicing HDR techniques. Since 1999, Motovun has hosted the international Motovun Film Festival for independent and avant-garde films from the U.S. and Europe. If you are a truffles, lover this is the most famous region in Europe for truffles. There are lots of wonderful locations for photographing the town and the beautiful hills that surround the city. Here we will try to catch the evening sunset with amazing colorful hills and you will get a chance to shoot Groznjan on the neighboring hill. (B)

Wednesday (4)  Porec

On day four we will visit Porec, which is situated on the coast of Istria, north of Rovinj. Porec is almost 2,000 years old, and is set around a harbor protected from the sea by the small island of Saint Nicholas/San Nicolo (St. Nicholas). The Euphrasian Basilica which is the episcopal complex, including, apart the basilica itself, a sacristy, a baptistery and the bell tower of the nearby archbishop's palace, is one of the best examples of early Byzantine architecture in the Mediterranean region. It has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997, and dates back to the second half of the 4th century. Porec will enchant you with stone roads, cafes, restaurants and harbor where you will capture beautiful photos. After returning from Porec we will stop at a lookout facing the beautiful Lim channel, known for it’s production of shells. On our way back to Rovinj landscapes are full of vineyards and olive trees, so you can take pictures on almost every meter of the road. (B)

Thursday (5)  Groznjan

On Thursday we will go to Groznjan, the ancient Graeciniana. The first mention of Groznjan dates back to 1102, when the Istrian Marquess Ulrich II and his wife Adelaida granted their land to the Patriarch of Aquileia. At the beginning of the 20th century, it used to be a city of traders and craftsmen, but after the fall of the Austrian Empire, people started to emigrate. In 1965. Groznjan was declared a ”Town of Artists”. Artists transformed old, abandoned houses into an art colony. That's why Groznjan has lots of small galleries. Groznjan is also the location of an annual jazz festival, attracting international musicians. In 2008 it won the European award for best small jazz festival. While walking around you will get the chance to take amazing photos of narrow streets, old stone houses, Groznjan's galleries and small churches. After a ”Farewell Dinner” together at one of the Istria's finest restaurants, we will have a night photography session. (B) (D)

Friday (6)  Rovinj

On day six, we will have our final group discussion, review our past week’s photos, trade contact information and say goodbye. We urge you to extend your stay and practice all the photography skills you have learned over the six days in other towns in Croatia or throughout Europe! (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
