Amazing Thailand

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Archipelago

Smiling faces and the natural splendor of this fascinating country await you.

Thailand Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles. You’ll experience this many times over on your adventure with us in the Kingdom of Thailand. And you will leave this wondrous country with many smiles of your own. From Chang Mai to Bangkok, the heartbeat of the country, your senses will be overloaded with the scents, sounds and tastes of one of the world’s most popular and exotic cultures. And finally ending in Phuket where the beauty will arrest you.

Our journey will cover many aspects of the Thailand that most people imagine. We will photograph the massive golden shrines to Buddha, the bustling markets overflowing with everything imaginable for sale, pristine beaches with azure water and fine white sand, and the crazy nightlife that punctuates the end of every day. The colors, the people, the food, the beauty of Thailand will all be captured through our cameras every day in this amazing country.

Join us in Thailand, and witness how this fiercely independent country has carved out it’s place in our imagination. Experience Thai food at it’s origin, both simple and flavorful. Meet the genuinely gracious Thai people along the way. And come away with an appreciation of a culture that is unmatched anywhere in Asia.

Our post-tour extension will take you to the beautiful beaches of Southern Thailand. The Province of Krabi is one of the top travel destinations in Thailand, and is famous for it’s 130 islands, numerous caves, reefs and waterfalls. See the itinerary below for more information.

SONGKRAN WATER FESTIVAL (4-Day Pre-Tour Extension - April Only)

Every April 13-16 Thailand celebrates Songkran (Thai New Years) with an amazing water festival. See the itinerary below for more information.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than in the Land of Smiles, Thailand!

Day 1 | Chiang Mai

We begin our adventure in Chiang Mai, the second largest city in Thailand, and once the capital of the Kingdom of Lanna, before it became part of what is Thailand today. Remnants of the ancient walls that once surrounded the city centuries ago are still very evident. We begin our journey in this amazing city, when we arrive at our hotel in the city center. We will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “The Art of Seeing” photographic technique. We will also have informal discussions about what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. In the afternoon we will visit the famous Wat Phra That Doi Sutep temple on the mountains outside the city. A climb up 309 steps will bring us into this temple built in the 1300’s, where a golden chedi will glow in the background while the saffron cloaked monks study and worship in silence. In the evening our “Welcome Dinner” will take place at one of Chiang Mai’s finest restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Chiang Mai

Today will highlight several of northern Thailand’s unique characteristics. We begin our day exploring one of the many elephant sanctuaries, to experience how elephants are cared for after they’ve been rescued from labor farms. There are no elephant rides or tricks in these sanctuaries – just care and attention to these magnificent creatures. In the afternoon, we’ll spend time visiting a small village where many residents of local hill tribes come together and share their crafts. In the evening, we take in the famous night market that’s always exciting and great to photograph. (B)

Day 3 | Chiang Mai - Yi Peng Festival (Floating Lanterns)*

We’ll start early, with a visit to the local wet market, where locals do most of their produce and meat shopping. Markets in SE Asia are something you can’t really explain until you’ve seen one. If you want to buy anything, you’ll find it here. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the small town of Bo Sang, which is a village famous for it’s umbrella arts. We will also have time in the evening to review our work so far, and share our best, while learning new editing skills. (B)

*NOVEMBER ONLY (Yi Peng Festival (Floating Lanterns): We spend the afternoon and evening at the Yi Peng Festival (Floating Lanterns). The indisputable highlight of Yi Peng and Loy Krathong is the spellbinding show that happens when thousands of people converge to release khom loi (lit lanterns) into the night sky. Prior to the big spectacle, the setting is joyful and serene as monks perform chants during an on-stage ceremony. During the other key ritual of this beautiful Thai festival of lights, participants let go of krathong—small floating vessels made from banana stalks and decorated with incense, offerings, flowers and candles—into rivers and other bodies of water, creating an ethereal sight that’s rarely duplicated elsewhere in the world. Surrounding events include bright parades, musical performances, beauty pageants, traditional dances, lantern-making contests, fireworks, and lots and lots of food. Additional cost for premium seats.

Day 4 | Chiang Mai - Bangkok

After checkout, we will have an early afternoon flight south to Bangkok. Bangkok is one of those cities that just have to be experienced to be believed. Thailand in general is a fascinating country, but Bangkok has a reputation as one of the most interesting cities to see in all of Asia. After checking in to our centrally located hotel, we’ll have a bit of time to relax, and review the images from the trip so far. At night, when the heat is reduced, we’ll visit one (or two) of the famous rooftop lounges that provide views for miles. (B)

Day 5 | Bangkok

Bangkok is all about the temples. Our first stop will be the Grand Palace, which is the ceremonial and traditional location for the Thai Royal family. This is a very large complex, with centuries of history to take in. Nearby is Wat Po, which holds the massive golden reclining Buddha, among other relics. As the day winds down, we’ll finish at Wat Arun, known as the Temple of Dawn, situated along the mighty Chao Phraya river. (B)

Day 6 | Bangkok

Our final day in Bangkok will introduce us to some of the local tradesmen who are still making metal bowls for monks by hand, as they have for centuries. And we’ll also climb to the top of the tallest temple in Bangkok, covered in gold, and highest natural land in the city. (B)

Day 7 | Ayutthaya

After checkout, we’ll drive north to the ancient city of Ayutthaya - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was once the ancient capital of Thailand. Much of the temples and relics that made up this royal city are in ruins today, but still maintain the grandeur and beauty that was part of that era. The morning and afternoon will be spent visiting what remains of the temples and compounds. We will catch an early evening flight to Phuket from Bangkok’s municipal airport. After our short flight we will settle into our hotel. (B)

Day 8 | Phuket

Phuket is the gateway to southern Thailand’s playground. With hundreds of miles of beautiful beaches everywhere, it’s the image that most people have in mind when they think of Thailand. But there is more to this province than just beaches. We’ll spend time in both new and old Phuket, where the contrasts are quite dramatic. We’ll have our “Farewell Dinner” in one of Phuket’s famous restaurants. (B) (D)

Day 9 | Phuket

We say goodbye to Thailand from this fun southern city, and say farewell to our guests over lunch and a chance to exchange contact information and share some of the photographs we’ve experienced over the past 9 days. You’d be encouraged to stay a few days extra in Phuket, and experience the most popular destination in Thailand. (B)

Day 1 | Phuket to Krabi

For those guests that have extended their tour to spend time in the beautiful beaches, we’ll leave Phuket at mid-day to travel to Krabi. The Province of Krabi is one of the top travel destinations in Thailand, and is famous for it’s 130 islands, numerous caves, reefs and waterfalls. (B)

Day 2 | Krabi

We will spend the morning exploring the beaches and caves of Railay Beach, a popular beach famous for its stunning landscapes. An early morning will ensure we get the best light and the least amount of people on this popular beach. Later on, those of your who are adventurous can join in on some water-based activities. In the afternoon we will take a break. You may choose to relax and enjoy the amenities of the hotel or feel free to wander off and photograph on your own. (B)

Day 3 | Southern Islands

We’ll take a full day visiting many of the incredible islands south of Krabi. We’ll stop in some of the more famous remote islands like Pod Island, Tup Island and Phi Phi’s Maya Bay. We’ll travel by private speedboat, allowing us to stay as long as we like in these picturesque islands. In the evening we will have another excuse to celebrate with our second “Farewell Dinner”! (B) (D)

Day 4 | Krabi

We’ll begin our final day in Krabi with an early morning trip around the area, for last minute shots with empty beaches. Before check out, we’ll have one last chance to review our best work from the past 12 days, and say our goodbyes. Flights back to Bangkok or Phuket, and then onwards to home, are easily obtained from the local airport. (B)

Days 1-4 | Changi Mai

(Only during April dates, as Songkran only takes place April 13-14-15 each year)

In addition to our already exciting adventure in Thailand, you can add an extra 3 days at the beginning of the trip, and join us for Songkran (Thai New Years). This festival will take place in advance of our scheduled tour, and will run April 13-16. Thailand celebrates their New Years with a water festival, and since April is the hottest month of the year, the water is quite welcoming.

Traditionally, water was used to bathe images of Buddha and poured gently over the hands of elders, while seeking blessings. But it’s grown into an all-out water fight held in the streets. No one can expect to stay dry in this wild event, but it’s all in good fun. City streets are overflowing with revelers ready to douse anyone with water and apply paste on their skin. It’s not dangerous in any way, nor is it dry in any way.

Ideally, you’ll want to bring along a waterproof camera, a GoPro, or casing for your DSLR with you for this event. Although you will be drawn in to participate in the party, you’ll also want to photograph this event that is unlike anything else in the world. What a great way to begin your adventure in Thailand!
