Northern New Mexico Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

If ancient adobes, big skies, and stunning vistas excite you, then the historic high desert of Northern New Mexico is the place you must experience — one of the most enchanting places anywhere in the United States. Northern New Mexico truly captures a variety of unique landscapes and ecosystems, from rugged mountains, powerful rivers and streams, historic villages and plazas, and breathtaking national parks. One of the few places in the United States where three cultures come together in harmony: the Native Americans who have been here for thousands of years, the Spanish influence since the 1600s, and the more recent Anglo tradition which balances out the other two.

Throughout this adventure we will come across quaint towns and monumental landscapes that offer a true taste of historic New Mexican history and culture. During our time together we will engage in group discussions, inspire one another and have a great time doing what we love. By the end of the trip you will be viewing a scene in a way like never before, as if there is a camera lens inside your mind’s eye.

We will guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a state that mixes three great cultures: Native American, Spanish, and Anglo. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. If you love photographing landscapes, mountains, native culture, grand vistas, and nature, then Northern New Mexico is about as enchanting as it gets!

Please note: Our photography guide will always be on the look-out for interesting images during our photo adventure and for this reason, our itineraries are always subject to change. Weather plays a major role in capturing the best images possible. Changing light and weather conditions will always be assessed and changes in the schedule will be made accordingly. Flexibility, patience, and a sense of adventure are key to having a great time and capturing stellar photographs.

NORTHERN NEW MEXICO 7 DAYS

Sunday (1)  Albuquerque

We meet at our hotel at noon where we introduce ourselves and then we travel together to get a bite to eat at Sadie's of New Mexico which offers traditional New Mexican cuisine where we discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During the group lunch we will have a discussion on what our guests would like to achieve through their photography style, technique and subject matters throughout this trip. Afterwards, we tour Ranchos de Albuquerque touring its farms and intimate side streets. In the evening we enjoy a hearty Southwest “Welcome Dinner.” After dinner we will taking advantage of the clear night skies to try our hand at some astro photography. (D)

Note: Each night during your adventure we will asses the weather conditions and for those interested there may be a late night or very early morning wake up call to head out to do some night sky or sunrise photography.

Monday (2)  Albuquerque - Santa Fe

After breakfast we checkout and begin our journey north along the “Turquoise Trail”, stopping first at Sandia Peak where we will hike the ridge and shoot the city of Albuquerque from one mile above. We then proceed to the unique, ex-mining town of Madrid, a favorite of hippies and bikers, where we will explore the town and lunch together on Main Street. After lunch we continue along the Turquoise Trail arriving in the capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe. Our hotel is located in the center of town with easy access to the plaza. We will enjoy drinks up at the Bell Tower Bar at La Fonda, which offers a commanding panoramic view of the “City Different” at sunset. (B)

Tuesday (3)  Santa Fe

After breakfast we will hike over to Canyon Road — an art district with over a 85 art galleries and studios exhibiting Native American art and antiquities. There are numerous photo ops here as well as great art in every media to be savored. Lunch nearby. After lunch we pay a visit to the mysterious Loretto chapel where we learn about the legendary spiral stair. Back at the hotel we freshen up then head out to the plaza of the Governors where we can experience the native artists selling their wares. Sunset hike to Mount Marcy. Dinner near the plaza. (B)

Wednesday (4)  Santa Fe - Taos

On Wednesday morning we have breakfast at our hotel and afterwards look through our images and discuss the trip to date. We will also have a Q & A about editing techniques. We take the 56-mile High Road to Taos which is a scenic, winding road through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains between Santa Fe and Taos. Along the way we stop in various photogenic historic Colonial Spanish villages such as Tesuque, Truchas, and Las Trampas, stopping for lunch at Ranchos de Chimayo, a restored hacienda specializing in authentic New Mexican cuisine. Later in the day we check into Mabel Dodge Luhan House* an historic B&B where DH Lawrence, Ansel Adams and Dennis Hopper often stayed. Easy walking distance to the historic Taos Plaza where we will dine in the evening. (B)

Thursday (5)  Taos

On our fifth day we will have breakfast and go over the images of the week, where we will have a discussion on workflow and editing techniques. Then we are off to The Wild Rivers Recreation Area just north of Taos where we will practice panorama photography techniques (the views are to die for). Lunch in Questa at Wildcat's Den. On the way back we stop for a dip in the Rio Grande at Arroyo Hondo. Back to Taos and some down time to shop and relax. Dinner in Taos at Lambert's of Taos near the plaza. (B)

Friday (6)  Taos - Abiquiú

We are off for a day trip to Abiquiú, home of the famous Ghost Ranch. We will take a private walking tour “behind the scenes” and follow the footsteps of Georgia O’Keefe to where she painted her iconic southwest images onsite at Ghost Ranch. On the way back to Taos we stop at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The plan is to take the 2 mile (very gentle) trail down to the bottom — be sure to bring sunscreen and water. We then return to our hotel for our final night together, sharing photographs and stories at our “Farewell Dinner” at Doc Martin's Restaurant at the Historic Taos Inn. (B) (D)

Saturday (7)  Taos - Albuquerque

For our last morning together we get up early to enjoy breakfast and have our final discussion about the amazing journey we have just embarked on. We will review our favorite images, trade contact information and prepare for our journeys home. Quick stop at Ranchos de Taos on the way back to Albuquerque. We then drive back to Albuquerque International Sunport arriving around noon. We urge you to extend your stay in New Mexico and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
