HISTORIC ROUTE 66

Amarillo, Tucumcari, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Flagstaff, Santa Monica

Explore and experience America’s Historic Route 66.

It’s not all about automobiles, although the automobile did play an important part in establishing America’s Historic Route 66. After all, it is a highway, or at least it used to be. And if you saw Disney’s animated movie “Cars”, you will probably recognize that the movie was based on the Route 66 story.

Known by several names throughout the years including the “Mother Road,” “Main Street of America,” and the “Will Rogers Highway,” Route 66 served travelers for some 50 years, before totally succumbing to the “new and improved” interstate system.

Established in 1926, road signs began to be erected the following year, but, it would be several years before the 2,448-mile highway would be continuously paved from Chicago to Los Angeles. Running through the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, the highway became one of the most famous roads in America. For decades, this historic path served thousands who were migrating west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. (Note: Our adventure covers the most interesting and photogenic states from Texas to California.)

Over the years, the road underwent many improvements and realignments, changing its path and overall length, and moving its endpoint farther west to Santa Monica. Unfortunately, Route 66 was eventually and officially decommissioned and the familiar highway markers came down. But, it was not the end of this historic path. New generations wanted to travel this old road, signs began to go back up, and today, thousands enjoy these vintage peeks along the old highway. However, the original road is not indicated on most maps or GPS systems today. Photo Workshop Adventures has scouted and researched Historic Route 66 so that you can capture and enjoy this slice of history, and make some interesting and beautiful images.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, and utilize and approach your environment. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the southwest and America’s Historic Route 66!

*All prices are per person and based on double occupancy. Please select single occupancy for a private room. For your convenience, we offer optional early arrival and late departure accommodations so you can extend your stay before or after the trip. We typically stay in upscale boutique hotels in the 4 and 5-star category. Not all destinations offer these types of properties. We look for unique hotels that offer cultural, historic, and/or authentic features. Depending on the size of the group, smaller boutique hotels may have limited room inventory. In some countries or in remote locations, we may be limited to lodges or branded chain hotels. In Cuba, we stay in upscale family-owned Casas (bread & breakfasts). On all of our tours, breakfast is almost always included, but not guaranteed. Meal categories listed include (B) for breakfast, (L) for lunch, and (D) for dinner.

ITINERARY

HISTORIC ROUTE 66 – 8 DAYS

Although the original Route 66 starts in Chicago, for the purposes of time and logistics, we will travel the most photogenic and scenic route, taking us from Amarillo, Texas throughout the southwest to Santa Monica, California. We will travel through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Note: At times we will veer off the Route 66 path to places like Santa Fe, Lake Arrowhead and possibly the Grand Canyon (time permitted).

Day 1 | Amarillo - Vega - Ghost Towns - Tucumcari

We meet in the morning** at our hotel in Amarillo, Texas where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. We will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques.

After lunch we will photograph the famous Cadillac Ranch and then drive west and explore the town of Vega, Texas as well as numerous New Mexico ghost towns along the way. We arrive in Tucumcari just in time for a sunset shoot of our vintage hotel.

In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite New Mexico restaurants. (D)

**Be sure to book an early arrival hotel room with us in Amarillo, TX. We will begin our journey at 9 AM and there will be no reasonable or cost effective way to catch up with the tour before we reach Albuquerque or Santa Fe, NM.

Day 2 | Tucumcari - Cline’s Corners - Albuquerque - Santa Fe

We depart Tucumcari and head west on Route 66. In the late morning we arrive in Santa Rosa and then Cline’s Corners, a landmark since 1934. Cline’s Corners has been pumping gas and selling souvenirs for over 70 years.

By late lunch we arrive in Albuquerque, New Mexico where we will explore this famous stretch of Route 66. Albuquerque’s history dates back 12,000 years when the Ancient Puebloan Indians settled in the area. But the Albuquerque we know came to life in 1540 when Conquistador Francisco Vasquez de Coronado came north in search of the mythical Seven Cities of Cibola.

By nightfall we head north to Santa Fe, New Mexico where we will spend the next two nights. (B)

Day 3 | Santa Fe - Embudo

While in Santa Fe we will explore Loretto Chapel which is right off the Plaza. This historic church is modeled after Saint Chappelle in Paris. Also nearby is St. Francis Cathedral, maybe Santa Fe’s most notable landmark. We round out the plaza walk with a stroll down Canyon Road.

Next we’re off to some old antique cars and gas station memorabilia. The Embudo Gas Museum sits in Embudo, NM, just a 45 minute drive from Santa Fe, along the road to Taos. In the evening we enjoy the city of Santa Fe at night. (B)

Day 4 | Gallup - Winslow - Two Guns - Flagstaff

On day four we depart very early and head southwest back to Albuquerque, NM and then west to Arizona. Aside from the occasional ghost town, we arrive at Gallup, New Mexico. Gallup was a typical, western frontier town with saloons, false store fronts, wooden sidewalks and a single road paralleling the railroad tracks. Nearby is the ancient Puebloans White House Ruin Canyon de Chelly National Monument. As we cross over into Arizona we are treated to the “Painted Desert” and “Petrified Forest” which make for some beautiful photography.

Next up… Winslow Arizona, made famous by The Eagles song “Take It Easy” in 1972. Lyrics… “I’m a standin’ on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, such a fine site to see – It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin’ down to take a look at me …”). Winslow is frozen in time and the prefect place absorb, photograph and enjoy a late lunch.

As we move west, and about thirty miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona, is the historic ghost town of Two Guns. The area that would become Two Guns started as a site of major confrontation between the Navajos and the Apaches in the 19th century. In 1880 the land just to the north of Two Guns was Canyon Diablo, which would become a ghost town before Two Guns was even born. We’ll explore this area before finally heading on the Flagstaff, Arizona where we will spend the night. (B)

Day 5 | Flagstaff - Seligman - Kingman

After breakfast we depart Flagstaff and head west to the small towns of Ash Fork and Seligman, Arizona. When Route 66 came through, Seligman accommodated the many travelers with numerous motor courts and services, bringing a substantial boost to the town’s economy. In the late 1970’s Seligman was bypassed by I-40, and then, in the mid 1980’s, the Santa Fe Railroad closed its operations in the city. Today, a visit to this small city is a step back in time, where you will see an odd mixture of cattle ranching, truck drivers and Mother Road icons. We’ll be sure to photograph The Rusty Bolt. By evening we arrive in Kingman, AZ. (B)

Day 6 | Cajon Pass - Oatman - Amboy - Barstow - San Bernardino

As we leave Arizona and make our way into California, we come to Cajon Pass, which separates the San Gabriel Mountains from the San Bernardino Mountains. This was once the only gateway negotiable by wagon trains. It was here that the Mojave Trail, the Mormon Trail, and the Spanish Trail converged. Along this old path traveled history’s Indians, trappers, explorers and scouts on their way to what would become the San Bernardino Valley. The first paved highway was built over the pass in 1916 and was upgraded several times until the highway was replaced by I-15 in 1969.

We’ll continue to explore more ghost towns and small towns along the way including the village of Oatman. As we drive south of Mojave National Park, we’ll pass more small towns including Amboy. After Barstow we make our way south to San Bernardino. By the evening we arrive at beautifully appointed Mission Inn Resort & Spa, a refreshing break from the Route 66 nostalgia. (B)

Day 7 | San Bernardino - Pasadena - West Hollywood - Santa Monica

On our last full day we will depart after breakfast and make our way through the streets of San Bernardino on to Pasadena, Los Angles, West Hollywood and finally Santa Monica, California. As to be expected, the urban sprawl has just about ended any trace of Route 66 as we close in on Los Angeles. There are still a few interesting places to photograph and enjoy along the way.

By afternoon, we arrive at our hotel in Santa Monica where we will rest before our “Farewell Dinner”, filled with great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Day 8 | Santa Monica

On our final day we have our final group discussion, review our favorite photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell.

We urge you to extend your stay in Santa Monica or elsewhere in the California and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
