Sedona, Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe, Lake Powell

Stunning orange, red and natural sandstone formations await you.

Arizona Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Sedona is a magical oasis surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. This stunning array of red sandstone formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that is wildly wonderful. Nestled in the Verde Valley, this was home to the Native American Yavapai and Apache tribes. Antelope Canyon, two hours north of Sedona is on Navajo land and includes two separate, photogenic slot canyon sections, referred to individually as Upper Antelope Canyon or The Crack; and Lower Antelope Canyon or The Corkscrew. These are the most photographed slot canyons in the American Southwest. It’s been said that it’s impossible to take a bad photograph in Arizona, and we have to agree. In addition to these two gems are the wonders of Lake Powell, Horseshoe Canyon and of course, the Grand Canyon.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our week together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the stunning beauty of Arizona’s red rock country!

Day 1 | Scottsdale - Sedona

Welcome to the Arizona! After our meet and greet we will promptly depart for Sedona and our adventure. On our drive we will discuss what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. Sedona is a desert town located a few hours north of Phoenix. It’s surrounded by stunning red-rock buttes, steep canyon walls and pine forests. It’s known for its mild climate, vibrant arts community and Red Rock State Park, which offers bird-watching, hiking and amazing photographic opportunities. Upon arrival we’ll check-in to our award-winning resort hotel, tucked along the banks of Oak Creek Canyon. Be prepared to be wowed.

After checkin we will enjoy lunch along the banks of the river and then head out for some afternoon and sunset photography in Red Rock country. In the evening we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” and our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique, followed by our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite southwest restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Sedona - Oak Creek Canyon - Red Rock Monoliths

After an early breakfast we heads for nearby Oak Creek Canyon where we will hike in using some very easy trails to access the river.

Oak Creek Canyon is a gorge carved into the edge of the Mogollon Rim of the Colorado Plateau along the Oak Creek Fault. Tectonic forces shifting the land to either side of the fault and subsequent erosion by Oak Creek have created a spectacular canyon where the geologic history of this area is an open book. The Canyon is approximately 12 miles long. Oak Creek flows year-round along the bottom of the Canyon, providing water for plants and wildlife, as well as fishing and swimming opportunities. The depth of the Canyon ranges from 800 to 2000 feet, with trails providing access from the Canyon’s bottom up to the 6500-foot eastern rim and 7200-foot western rim. Some of these trails follow historic routes early Oak Creek Canyon settlers used to access the top of the plateau in the days before the road was built. Trails on the west side of the Canyon head into Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness.

After a picnic lunch and discussions while overlooking the canyon, we make our way back to Sedona to photograph the red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot Rock, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock and Thunder Mountain. Who gave them names is unknown but the name of each major formation resembles its shape. For example, the character Snoopy from the popular Peanuts comic strip lies on top of his doghouse. Another is Lucy, also from the Peanuts comic strip. Then there are Coffeepot Rock, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Chimney Rock, Courthouse Butte, The Mittens, The Cow Pies, and the Rabbit Ears. From the front door of Chapel of the Holy Cross, take a peek at Eagle Head Rock as well as the Twin Nuns and Mother and Child Rock buttes. The Three Golden Chiefs and Capitol Butte can be seen from Coffee Pot. The evening wouldn’t be complete without a sunset shoot from a beautiful vantage point. (B)

Day 3 | Sedona - Page - Horseshoe Bend - Lake Powell

On day three we checkout early and trek north to northern Arizona and the town of Page, home to Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend and the Colorado River. The 12 mile drive from Sedona to Flagstaff on State Route 89A is one of America’s most scenic drives, so we will be sure to enjoy the vista’s and take some photos along the way. Upon our arrival in Page we head first to Horseshoe Bend where the Colorado River runs through this huge 180 degree canyon Horseshoe Bend is one of the most photographed locations in Page. Arriving in the late morning or early afternoon is the prefect time to photograph Horseshoe Bend because the shadows are gone from the Colorado River. After, we checkin to our hotel and have lunch.

In mid-afternoon we take a Lake Powell Boat Tour (or Antelope Slot Canyon Boat Tour - depending on our schedule), where you will be treated to stunning and spectacular photo opportunities of the changing water lines as our boat glides through the slots. The sheer sandstone cliffs were formed by the Lower Jurassic Glen Canyon Group (Wingate, Kayenta, and Navajo Formations) and the Middle Jurassic Entrada and Romana Sandstones. (B)

Day 4 | Antelope Canyon - Page

After breakfast we depart early for one of the Antelope Canyon Slot Canyons on Depending on the group size we may be treated to a private guided Hummer tour on Navajo land. Otherwise we will visit either the Lower or Upper Antelope Canyons. The experience inside these canyons is quite impressive, with the endless shafts of light beaming through from above. We spend the early afternoon reviewing images and discussing post processing techniques. In the late afternoon we set out to explore other great photo opportunities in the area ending with a sunset shoot. (B)

Day 5 | Grand Canyon - Flagstaff

On day five we checkout very early and head south to Grand Canyon National Park for some amazing early morning photography. We will spend the morning and afternoon exploring. By mid to late afternoon we begin our trek south to Flagstaff where we will checkin to our hotel. In the evening we enjoy our “Farewell Dinner”, filled with great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

OPTIONAL HELICOPTER EXCURSION: Optional flight over the Grand Canyon.

Day 6 | Flagstaff - Scottsdale

While enjoying breakfast we conduct our final group discussion and review. We depart early for our 2.5 hour drive to Phoenix. We will drop you at Sky Harbor International Airport in downtown Scottsdale or Phoenix depending on your travel plans. As an option you can also choose to fly out of Flagstaff Airport. Here we will sadly bid you farewell.

We urge you to extend your stay in Phoenix or elsewhere Arizona and apply all the wonderful photographic techniques you learned on this Photo Adventure. (B)
