WASHINGTON DC

Monuments, Memorials, Gardens, Capitol Building and more

Capture the essence and magic of the nation’s capital.

There really isn’t quite another city in the world like Washington D.C. With its iconic landmarks and famous sites, Washington D.C. is an ideal place to appreciate the history of America while improving your skills in travel, fine art, long exposure, and cityscape photography.

Photographic opportunities include the National Mall, otherwise known as the Nation’s front lawn – home to a bevy of incredible sights, including the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian, and our U.S. Capitol. Also is the grand Tidal Basin, the central site of the famous cherry blossoms that bloom every spring, and the Jefferson Memorial and newly erected Martin Luther King Memorial. Other fantastic sights include the Library of Congress, one of the most beautiful interior spaces in the world, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House. DC also offers exceptionally beautiful parks, including Rock Creek Park, The National Arboretum, as well as US Botanical Gardens Conservatory. The war memorials are stunning to photograph (even in the winter snow). These include the Iwo Jima Memorial (otherwise known as the Marine Corps Memorial), the Air Force Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, and the Vietnam War Memorial. There is just so much to enjoy and photograph in this city!

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but also to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, and photograph people and events within the city. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.

ITINERARY

WASHINGTON DC 4 DAYS

Day 1 | National Mall - Washington Monument - US Capitol

After meeting at our hotel, we head to the National Mall – home of the most iconic structure in Washington, D.C., the Washington Monument. Witnessing this 555 ft. marble obelisk, commemorating our first President, is something that every visitor to Washington, D.C. must do. We will then walk west towards the world-renowned Smithsonian Institution and its starkly colored red brick exterior.

We will end the day at another classic structure, the U.S. Capitol. Before day’s end, we will have explored its beautiful grounds, including Lower Senate Park with its elegant fountains and the Capitol Reflecting Pool.

After we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at a favorite DC restaurant. (D)

Day 2 | Vietnam Memorial - Lincoln Memorial - Capital Gardens

Day 2 begins before dawn when we will head out to witness more of Washington, D.C.’s most well-known memorials. We will shoot the sunrise at the Vietnam Memorial, where the mirrored surface reflects the colors of morning with a beautiful radiance. We then will explore the surrounding area, including the Lincoln Memorial – the nation’s most visited park – taking note and capturing the beautiful architecture inside and out. We will also visit surrounding sites, including the Capitol Gardens and the Korean War Memorial.

With so many beautiful sights in one area, we won’t go far for sunset – as we will capture the setting sun over the WWII Memorial and with the dramatic backdrop of the Washington Monument. (B)

Day 3 | Jefferson Memorial - White House

On day 3, we will head to the beautiful Tidal Basin, where the city’s water acts as a mirror for the sunrise over the Jefferson Memorial. We will continue to explore the Tidal Basin area, including the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial and its set of intricate fountains, and the newly erected Martin Luther King Memorial with its dramatic stone structures. We will wander slightly off of the water to the DC War Memorial, a beautiful if forgotten site but popular for engagements and weddings.

Then we will head to the home of the President of the United States, the White House before sunset back at the Tidal Basin.

After a long day, we head back to our hotel and end the evening with a wonderful “Farewell Dinner.” remembering all the great experiences we shared. (B) (D)

Day 4 | Arlington Cemetery - Military Memorials

On day 4, we will travel across the river to Arlington, where a bevy of the most well-known memorials has been erected. We will capture the sunrise at the Iwo Jima Memorial, which faces eastward to the Washington, D.C. skyline of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and U.S. Capitol in line.

We then head south towards the Netherlands Carillion, which offers a beautiful bed of tulips in the spring and an even better view over the Potomac to the Washington, D.C. skyline. We will travel by taxi to the Air Force Memorial, a newer structure but undoubtedly one of the most dramatic memorials in the city with its stainless steel spires pointed upward in the “Missing Man Formation”.

We conclude the workshop at the Arlington Cemetery, where headstones of the most important soldiers lay amongst mature trees and rolling hills. (B)
