VANISHING CUBA

CLASSIC CUBA

HAVANA

CUBA PRIVATE

Discover Cuba’s warm people and its unique and colorful culture.

A tropical paradise with a storied past, Cuba offers us a unique view of a world few have been able to see. Photographing Cuba offers us the rare opportunity to capture its warm people alongside its natural beauty and stunning architecture. Our 8-day Classic Cuba Photo Adventure includes 5 days in Havana, 2 days in Trinidad, and an afternoon in Cienfuegos, located on the southern coast of Cuba. Laidback Caribbean Island culture mixed with the big-city life of Havana, where vintage American cars from the 40’s and 50’s roll by you on Havana’s Malecon. Cienfuegos, on the other hand, is a port city on the southern coast with architecture that reflects its French colonial roots, and quaint and tranquil Trinidad is Cuba’s best-preserved colonial city showcasing its Spanish Colonial roots.

Like all of our adventures, we take you behind the scenes of Cuba’s tourist veil and expose you to the inner city culture that is the real Cuba. By working with locals, we are able to achieve this on an unprecedented level. Besides photography, we’ll be speaking with Cubans about daily life on the island, learning about the country’s unique political and economic system, and working side-by-side with Cuban photographers. Our travels outside Havana allow us a close view of the island’s beautiful countryside and offers us the unique opportunity to discover rural Cuba through photography. Old Havana, Viñales Valley, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad are all UNESCO World Heritage sites.

OUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS:  It’s been said that we really know how to do Cuba right. We stay in the finest and most authentic Casa Particulars (Cuban bed & breakfasts). We travel by air-conditioned vehicles and beautifully restored vintage American automobiles. We dine in world-renowned Cuban restaurants and authentic hidden gem paladars. And lastly, we expose you to not only a truly amazing and authentic Cuba but the most photogenic Cuba. We always travel to Cuba with the “Support of the Cuban People”.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your new-found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. You will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable about how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region, and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. Cuba offers more photographic opportunities than any other adventure we offer. Cuba is not to be missed!

*All prices are per person and based on double occupancy. Please select single occupancy for a private room. For your convenience, we offer optional early arrival and late departure accommodations so you can extend your stay before or after the trip. We typically stay in upscale boutique hotels in the 4 and 5-star category. Not all destinations offer these types of properties. In some countries or in remote locations, we may be limited to lodges or branded chain hotels. In Cuba, we stay in upscale family-owned casas (bread & breakfasts). On all of our tours, breakfast is almost always included, but not guaranteed. Meal categories listed include (B) for breakfast, (L) for lunch, and (D) for dinner).

ITINERARY

CLASSIC CUBA 8 DAYS

Day 1 | Old Havana - Central Havana

We meet at our casa in Havana where we will begin our CLASSIC CUBA Photo Adventure. We begin day one with a deep dive into Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Plaza de la Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Habana is probably the most impressive gem of Old Havana. We’ll wander through the Plaza de Armas, a scenic tree-lined plaza formerly at the center of influence in Cuba. It is surrounded by many of the most historic structures in Havana as well as important monuments. Photograph the Plaza de San Francisco, a cobbled plaza surrounded by buildings dating from the 18th century, dominated by the baroque Iglesia and Convento de San Francisco dating from 1719. Finally, we’ll visit the Plaza Vieja, surrounded by sumptuous houses of the Havana aristocracy from the 18th and 19th centuries.

In the evening we’ll cross the Prado into Central Havana and enjoy a wonderful “Welcome Dinner” at the award-winning Paladar San Cristobal. A taste of colonial Cuba, San Cristobal offers wonderful entrees served on 19th-century china, surrounded by stacks of books, old antiques, and nostalgic black and white photographs. You can ask owner Carlos Cristóbal Márquez Valdés all about it. (D)

Day 2 | Central Havana - Vedado - Hemingway’s - Miramar

On day two we take an early morning walk through Central Havana, home to many working class Cubans. Here we’ll focus on low-light street photography as the city comes to life. After breakfast we’ll visit a Havana Cigar Factory, the birthplace of premium cigars, where you’ll be hit with the smell of unlit cigar tobacco, earthy and pungent and remarkably intoxicating. We’ll see scores of workers, each making cigars entirely by hand. It’s an un-rushed, antique and artisanal process, one that has not changed for hundreds of years.

After lunch we will visit the famous Hotel Nacional. The amazing setting will bring many back to the 1950s, when the mafia held its annual meetings at this historic hotel and walk the streets of Central Havana. Then we’re off to La Finca Vigía, formerly the home of Ernest Hemingway. Today La Finca Vigía still houses his expansive collection of Hemingway’s books. It was here where he wrote two of his most celebrated novels: For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. The beautiful grounds and bizarre tales from Hemingway’s many years in Cuba are captivating.

Before sunset we’ll walk the Malecon (Havana’s 5-mile long sea wall) where we’ll experience Cubans hanging out, fishing, dancing, romancing, and playing music. We’ll capture the sunset before heading to dinner at El Cocinero, a lovely restaurant housed in a former Power Plant and Factory. Home to Havana’s hip, you might think you are in Soho or Madrid. Following dinner we walk next door for live music, art and photography at La Fabrica de Arte Cubana. Rock star X Alfonso has turned this into a meeting place for young and eclectic Cubans and foreigners. (B)

Day 3 | Vedado - Old Havana - Central Havana

We begin with an early morning photoshoot at a “lost in time” centuries old Cuban Mansion for a photography session with ballerinas. Built at the turn of the century, this home is truly a masterpiece, and has remained untouched since the revolution in 1959. Considered by many as one of the most rewarding experiences of our tour. By late morning we are ready to attend a boxing session at the famous “Rafael Trejo” Boxing Gym in Old Havana. Here we will have the opportunity to photograph boxers as they train. We’ll enjoy lunch in Old Havana.

After lunch we will visit an American Classic Car restoration garage. Owners Nidialys Acosta and Julio Alvarez have put together a fleet of 20 plus pristine “Clasicos” (as Cuban’s refer to them), to provide professional service to their car clientele. Learn first hand how they restore these classic American beauties from the 1950’s. This setting makes for some amazing photography. Then we’ll go for a drive in these beautifully restored cars, driving along the Malecón (Havana’s seawall), visiting the mansions in the Miramar neighborhood and experiencing the bustle of Neptuno and San Lazaro streets in the city center.

In the early evening we are treated to a musical performance with Frank Delgado, renowned singer and songwriter, for a discussion about the nueva trova movement in Cuba. Frank is often referred to as the Billy Joel of Cuba. For dinner we will experience the world famous La Guarida Paladar, the set to the movie “Strawberry and Chocolate,” and known for its spectacular ambiance and delicious desserts. Not to be missed. (B, L)

Day 4 | Old Havana - Prado - Malecon - Verdado

After breakfast we’ll walk Old Havana again, except this time on the less iconic side of the city, home to the working class. Here we’ll find a lot of great street photography opportunities.

After lunch we’ll explore the Prado, which divides Old Havana and Central Havana. We’ll begin at El Capitolio (the National Capitol Building) in Havana, which was commissioned by Cuban president Gerardo Machado and built from 1926 to 1929 under the direction of Eugenio Rayneri Piedra. After, we will move to the Gran Teatro de La Habana, home to the Cuban National Ballet. It was designed by the Belgian architect Paul Belau and built by Purdy and Henderson, Engineers in 1914 at the site of the former Teatro Tacón. We’ll continue down the Prado to the Malecon photographing along the way. Dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in Vedado. (B)

Day 5 | Havana - Cienfuegos - Trinidad

On day five we depart Havana for Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for it’s cobblestoned streets, pastel colored homes and small-town feel.

Before arriving in Trinidad we’ll visit the city of Cienfuegos, referred to as the “Pearl of the South”. Cienfuegos is one of Cuba’s only cities to display French and Spanish architecture. Housed on one of the country’s largest Bays, the city offers beautiful ocean front landscapes, and is deeply rich in culture. We will meet with the internationally recognized photographer “Omar Garcia Valenti” from Cienfuegos, who will show us some of his work and then lead a photoshoot in the downtown area.

We’ll have lunch in Cienfuegos and then head to Trinidad. En route you’ll get to see some of Cuba’s beautiful turquoise waters as the road hugs the coast. Once in Trinidad we will check-in to our casa. After a short break, we set out to photograph the streets and people of Trinidad, ending with a sunset photo shoot from the famous bell tower. (B, L)

Day 6 | Trinidad

A sunrise photo walk through Trinidad is a must. Here we will witness the city come to life, and before the tourists arrive. Not only is the light at its best, but the photographic opportunities are seemingly endless. After breakfast we will visit the Plaza Mayor and the famous Iglesia Parroquial de la Santisima church, as well as the many other restored architectural gems in this charming village.

After lunch we’ll take a break and stay out of the midday sun. We’ll meet with a local historian who will tell us the history of this beautifully preserved and restored Spanish colonial gem. In the late afternoon we will visit rural Trinidad. Dinner at one of our favorite paladars. (B, D)

Day 7 | Trinidad - Havana - Miramar

On day seven, after an early morning walk through Trinidad, we enjoy breakfast and depart for Havana. We arrive in Havana just in time for a late lunch and then check-in. Your afternoon is free to relax, shop, get a shot you missed, or visit the fine art or revolutionary museum.

In the evening we enjoy a wonderful “Farewell Dinner” at one of our favorite paladars in Miramar. (B, D)

Day 8 | Havana

Our final day includes an early morning photo walk to a local vegetable market, followed by breakfast and a final review of your favorite photos of the trip. After checkout, we’ll arrange transfers to the airport. (B)
