Dubrovnik (plus Montenegro)

Dubrovnik, Korčula, Cavtat, Lopud, Kotor and Budva

Dubrovnik and Montenegro... often called the “Pearls of the Adriatic”.

Dubrovnik & Montenegro Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

We begin with 4 days in Dubrovnik, which proudly lives up to it’s nickname the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. We then add two days in stunning Kotor, Kotor Bay and Budva in amazing Montenegro. Combined, this is one amazing photographic journey not to be missed.

Dubrovnik, Croatia is steeped in stunning architecture and sculptural detail, and boasts spectacular churches, monasteries, museums, and fountains, and is proudly a UNESCO World Heritage site. A multitude of towns and islands include: the Elaphiti Islands, the attractive village of Cavtat, the Konavle valley, Mljet Island, Korčula Island, Ston and Peljesac Peninsula. Dubrovnik was built on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages it became the only city-state in the Adriatic to rival Venice. Supported by it’s wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries. Dubrovnik was also one of the centers of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars. Even though Dubrovnik sits on the southern tip of Croatia, far from the rest of the country, and just minutes from Montenegro, Dubrovnik is often what comes to mind when people think about Croatia.

Montenegro may be small, but it is unique in so many ways. Nowhere else will you find such natural wealth, beauty, mild beaches. clear lakes, fast rivers and gorgeous mountains in such a compact area as in Montenegro. It is an excellent choice because of its rich history, culture, tradition, good weather and proximity to the Adriatic Sea. Despite its small size, it offers great diversity and abundant natural beauty. Similar to Croatia, there is a dream-like grandeur in every view of Montenegro. You'll surely capture some of your most beautiful photos here.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than these two Pearls of the Adriatic.

This adventure is preceded by our Croatia Photo Adventure which makes for 14 amazing days in Croatia.

Day 1 | Dubrovnik

We meet in the morning at our hotel in Dubrovnik. If you are continuing on from our Croatia 9-day Photo Adventure, you will simply segue into this wonderful new adventure. After meeting up we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. From here we will set out for a wonderful day of photography throughout this amazing walled city on the sea.  In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Croatian restaurants high atop the city. (D)

Day 2 | Cavtat - Lokrum

On day two we travel just south of Dubrovnik to the enchanting seaside village of Cavtat. The city is perched on the saddle of a wooded peninsula set between two bays, so you're never more than moments from the water. The sea is as still as a mirror, a deep and brilliant blue with pools of green reflected from the pine forests beyond. A wide promenade, fringed with palm trees, runs along the harbor front. This fascinating and cultured destination in itself is an amazing place to spend the day capturing yet another image of Croatia. Afterwards we spend the afternoon on the island of Lokrum, just to the south of Dubrovnik. Lokrum is a magical oasis indeed. A true nature lovers paradise. While there we will explore the ruins of Benedictine Monastery that was built there in medieval times. Interesting to know is Lokrum’s unusual historic heritage – back in 12th century, the island was shelter to King Richard the Lionheart while he was shipwrecked on his trip back home from the third Crusade. (B)

Day 3 | Dubrovnik - Lopud - Kolocep

In the morning we walk the walls of the city from one end to the other, offering us spectacular views of the city, the sea, the islands and the mountains that watch over this magnificent fortress. Dubrovnik has been described as a jewel encased by city walls and, beyond them, by the unbroken blue of the sea. But wait, it gets even better... after lunch and an afternoon break, we are picked up by boat (weather permitting) a for photo tour of the islands of Lopud and Kolocep. Afterward we stop at Lopud for the sunset and dinner before returning to our hotel by boat. You’ll be free to kayak on Lopud if time permits. (B)

Day 4 | Korčula - Ston

On day four we head north to the island of Korčula. Korčula is rich in vineyards, olive groves, small villages and hamlets. The island’s dense woods led the original Greek settlers to call the island Korkyra Melaina (Black Korčula). We will visit its main settlement, Korčula Town, which is a gorgeous grid of marble streets and impressive architecture. Upon our return we will stop in Ston on the Peljesac Peninsula. The village of Ston is known for three things – its very well preserved medieval walls, its salt works, and its oysters! The walls of Ston are perhaps what this little village is best known for – and rightfully so. The walls are much longer than those of its more famous neighbor Dubrovnik at 5km in length, making them the longest defensive structure in Europe. They are sometimes referred to as the ‘European Walls of China”. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries as a additional defense for the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) and to protect the lucrative salt pans in the area. The walls also consist of three fortresses – Veliki Kastil (in Ston), Korula (Mali Ston) and Prodzvizd Fort. (B)

Day 5 | Budva - Sveti Stefan - Kotor Bay - Kotor

Today we depart Dubrovnik and Croatia in the early morning hours and short drive south to Montenegro, first to Budva and then Kotor Bay. Montenegro is only 45 minutes from Dubrovnik. Budva is a coastal town in Montenegro and it is well known for its sandy beaches and nightlife, but there are just as many historical and cultural sights to see and photograph. Budva is 2,500 years old, which makes it one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. We will explore Budva's Old Town and walk the length of the old town walls. From here we will visit the island of Sveti Stefan where we’ll have lunch. Next up... The amazing medieval village of Kotor and Kotor Bay. We will check-in to our hotel and enjoy the magnificent views of the fjord-like mountains. Kotor is so dramatic in real life that it’s honestly impossible to describe with words. Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site, know for its numerous cultural and historic monuments. In the evening we will enjoy a wonderful “Farewell Dinner”, where we will have great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Day 6 | Kotor Bay - Dubrovnik

On our final day we checkout after breakfast and drive Kotor Bay on our way back to Dubrovnik. On the northwest part of the bay we will take a boat to the island of “Gospa od Skrpjela“ known for its 68 frescoes before bidding Kotor and Montenegro farewell. We will arrive in Dubrovnik by around noon where we will bid you farewell at the airport. We urge you to extend your stay in Dubrovnik or elsewhere in Croatia or Montenegro and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

NOTE: You can depart this trip from Dubrovnik or stay in Montenegro and depart from Tivat Airport (TIV). Details about late departure hotel stays or departure airport you plan to use will be discussed in more detail once you register, or feel free to reach out to us at anytime to discuss further.

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
