Southern China

Shanghai, Guilin, Longsheng, Xingping, Yangshuo, Hong Kong

From high tech skyscrapers to breathtaking valleys and terraced rice fields.

Southern China Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

We begin in the high-tech city of Shanghai, but quickly move on to Southern China and to Guilin. One of the better known destinations of Southern China, and indeed the whole of China, Guilin, which is a name that literally means Sweet Osmanthus, is a prefectural city that has a tourism sector driven by one of the best sights in the entire world, the Li River.

The Li River, which is widely dubbed to be the soul of Guilin, exists as the radial focal point of all the majestic views to be savored, in and around Guilin, with the pick of the views arguably being the Karsts. The Karst Mountains and caves in Guilin are one of the few places on earth that displays the beauty of huge, naturally forged Karst hills and caves. The hills and caves have been an ancient attraction with some inscriptions on its walls dated 729 AD in the Tang Dynasty. The beauty of the place and its imposing structures made this an almost spiritual place to visit and experience. Today, thousands of people visit the site each year and attracting thousands more as the news of its beauty is being spread all over the world.

Next we move on to Longsheng, known for its fantastic natural scenery with spiraling rice terraced fields that were built about 700 years ago, and ethnic villages with unique buildings, costumes and customs. The cities of Longsheng, Xingping and Yangshuo will all take your breath away. We end our journey in Hong Kong, which is sure to delight many.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than in China!

This adventure is preceded by our Middle Kingdom Photo Adventure which makes for 18 amazing days in China.

Day 1 | Shanghai

Shanghai is one of the most modern cities in China, where east meets west and old meets modern. When you arrive for the first time here, you will be awed by the size and scope of this city of 24 million people. With some of Asia’s tallest towers, and more being built at a feverish pace, this city is world class and works hard to keep it that way. After checking into our boutique hotel in central Shanghai, we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “The Art of Seeing” photographic technique. We will also have informal discussions about what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. We begin with a trip at twilight to the Bund area to photograph the imposing towers across the river to the Pudong side, followed by our “Welcome Dinner” with an enviable view. (D)

Day 2 | Shanghai - Guilin

We begin our day with a trip through the old parts of Shanghai, visiting a classic Chinese garden nestled in the middle of the city, as well one of the many art & boutique districts that dot this city. This city is under constant renewal, and growth is barreling ahead at such a dizzying pace, that it’s important to find the hidden areas that still maintain the charm and history of old China. We will take an afternoon flight to the small city of Guilin. This beautiful city is the starting point for many wonderful places in Guangxi province. Guilin is surrounded by limestone karst peaks, plus several lakes and rivers. Later tonight we will have a chance to discuss the photographs we’ve taken so far, and compare techniques. (B) (L)

Day 3 | Guilin

Our day begins with a visit to the local lakes, parks and pagodas in the area. This city is renowned for it’s beautiful surroundings, outdoor settings, lakes and river areas. There is no shortage of things to photograph around Guilin, with so much natural and manmade beauty. We will also visit one of the many massive underground caves in the area. Guilin is surrounded by karst peaks, giving us a hint of what’s to come in the days ahead (B) (L)

Day 4 | Longsheng

We will drive to the terraced rice fields of Longsheng this morning, and stay in a local guesthouse. We will visit the local ethnic minorities and hike to the top of the fields for breathtaking views of the terraces at sunset. (B)

Day 5 | Longsheng - Xingping

We begin early today, with sunrise photos of the fields and mountains, before we start our journey up the Li River to our next stop at Xingping. With many beautiful scenic spots along the way, we will stop frequently to take it all in. Later in the afternoon, we will photograph the old fisherman with their cormorant birds that have been fishing this way for centuries. The iconic images of this area are memories you will cherish forever. (B) (L)

Day 6 | Xingping - Yangshuo

Sunrise photos over the karst limestone peaks start our day in this small village along the Li River. The village of Xingping is centuries old, with it’s cobblestone streets, it still maintains a charm of old China. We will visit some small farmhouses with local farmers before we head to Yangshuo in the late afternoon, and spend the night there. (B) (L)

Day 7 | Yangshuo

Yangshuo is a very beautiful part of Guangxi province, surrounded by karst peaks and the Li River. This area is so spectacular, that one of the local scenes is featured on the back of the 20 yuan note. We will visit local smaller nearby villages as well, with their own charm and ancient history. After dinner in one of the local restaurants, we will have a chance to review images from the last week, and compare techniques. (B)

Day 8 | Guilin - Hong Kong

We will transfer to Guilin for a flight to the incredible city of Hong Kong. Arriving in Hong Kong will be a fitting end to what modern China has become. The island area of Hong Kong is one of the densest areas in the world. With a limited amount of space available, the only place to grow is up, and in Hong Kong they have that perfected. With dizzying heights of towers on the mountainside, everyone has a perfect view of Victoria Harbor. In the evening we will have our “Farewell Dinner” in Hong Kong in one of it’s best known restaurants with a city view. (B) (D)

Day 9 | Hong Kong

Hong Kong just doesn’t stop buzzing. Even early in the morning, the city moves fast. With millions of people packed into a small area, the streets are overflowing with crowds, cars, trams and buses. We will escape the crowds by visiting one of the more serene parks hidden in the hills of Kowloon, along with a beautiful nunnery that’s lasted for centuries. We say goodbye to China from this fun southern city, and say farewell to our guests over lunch and a chance to exchange contact information and share some of the photographs we’ve experienced over the past 9 days. May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
