It’s not all about automobiles, although the automobile did play an important part in establishing America’s Historic Route 66. After all, it is a highway, or at least it used to be. And if you saw Disney’s animated movie “Cars”, you will probably recognize that the movie was based on the Route 66 story.

Known by several names throughout the years including the “Mother Road,” “Main Street of America,” and the “Will Rogers Highway,” Route 66 served travelers for some 50 years, before totally succumbing to the “new and improved” interstate system.

Established in 1926, road signs began to be erected the following year, but, it would be several years before the 2,448-mile highway would be continuously paved from Chicago to Los Angeles. Running through the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, the highway became one of the most famous roads in America. For decades, this historic path served thousands who were migrating west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Over the years, the road underwent many improvements and realignments, changing its path and overall length, and moving its endpoint farther west to Santa Monica. Unfortunately, Route 66 was eventually and officially decommissioned and the familiar highway markers came down. But, it was not the end of this historic path. New generations wanted to travel this old road, signs began to go back up, and today, thousands enjoy these vintage peeks along the old highway. However, the original road is not indicated on most maps or GPS systems today. This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, and utilize and approach your environment. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. For your convenience, we offer optional early arrival and late departure accommodations so you can extend your stay before or after the trip. We typically stay in upscale boutique hotels in the 4 and 5-star category. Not all destinations offer these types of properties. We look for unique hotels that offer cultural, historic, and/or authentic features. Depending on the size of the group, smaller boutique hotels may have limited room inventory. In some countries or in remote locations, we may be limited to lodges or branded chain hotels. In Cuba, we stay in upscale family-owned Casas (bread & breakfasts). On all of our tours, breakfast is almost always included, but not guaranteed. Meal categories listed include (B) for breakfast, (L) for lunch, and (D) for dinner.
