New Orleans

French Quarter, Garden District, Bywater, Marigny and more

Great Louisiana food, music and French-Creole history.

New Orleans Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

New Orleans, the largest city in Louisiana and one of the oldest in the US, sits along the Mississippi River and is famous for its music (Jazz in particular), culinary scene, the ever-popular Mardi Gras festival, and overall eclectic atmosphere. The many elements that New Orleans has to offer make it unlike any other city in the nation. With influences coming from French, Creole, African-American, Irish, etc., it is no doubt that this famed city is significantly rich in culture and sophistication. You can find this influence is quite apparent and manifested in its architecture and historical establishments. You’ll especially appreciate the unique French Quarter with its French-Creole style buildings along the famous Bourbon Street. The extent of New Orleans’ rich history doesn’t just lie in its city center— we will explore the nearby swamp lands for stunning topography and wildlife, as well as take a day trip through some of Louisiana’s pre-abolition plantations.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the unique, historic city of New Orleans.

Sunday (1)  New Orleans

On Sunday morning, after checking into our hotel, we begin by discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. Followed by lunch and informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. After lunch, we begin our photo walk and explore some of New Orleans’ famed cemeteries. These beautiful, intricate, above-ground tombstones and sculptures make for some amazing photographs while taking in the city’s culture. For our “Welcome Dinner”, we will make our way just north of the French Quarter to Frenchmen Street in the authentic music district. This area is filled with jazz restaurants and bars, which will allow for a fun dinner while enjoying this lively jazz culture. (D)

Monday (2)  Plantations

Just an hour outside the city is Oak Alley Plantation, which is one of the two plantations we’ll visit on this day. And we’re sure you won’t want to put your camera down. New Orleans’ plantations are not only picturesque, but they offer such unique and fascinating experiences. You’ll be able to capture the history of Louisiana’s pre-abolition plantation culture while touring these incredible plantations. Between the two plantation tours, we’ll find a quaint local restaurant to stop for lunch. After lunch, we’ll embark on our second plantation tour to see first-hand the history of pre-Civil War Louisiana. We will head back towards the hotel, where you are free to enjoy dinner on your own. (B)

Tuesday (3)  French Quarter - Bourbon Street - Bywater - Marigny

Tuesday morning we depart the hotel to explore New Orleans’ most culturally rich neighborhoods— starting with the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. During our photo walk, we’ll head towards Jackson Square, where we’ll find the St. Louis Cathedral, one of New Orleans’ most beautiful cathedrals. Before we start heading towards the Bywater neighborhood, we’ll have to stop at Café du Monde, a French bakery/coffee shop known for its traditional Louisiana beignets. During our stroll through the picturesque Bywater, we’ll stop for lunch before walking through the pretty New Orleans-style houses and voodoo shops in the area of Marigny. These three areas are the quintessential New Orleans neighborhoods that leave you in awe of its distinctive beauty. The day concludes with a dinner at one of New Orleans’ old established restaurants. (B)

Wednesday (4)  Jean Lafitte Nature Preserve - Riverboat

On Wednesday morning we’ll set out on an airboat tour of one of New Orleans’ swamps, filled with wildlife (such as alligators!). No doubt, an exceptional trip you won’t often get the opportunity to experience. The day doesn’t end there. We enjoy lunch at a back country New Orleans restaurant. In the evening we’ll get the chance to see New Orleans from the vantage point of the Mississippi River by taking a jazz band riverboat cruise— quite the unique way to see the city. (B)

Thursday (5)  Audubon Park - Magazine Street - Garden District

Today we will set out to explore the beautiful, expansive Audubon Park (Uptown). To get there, we’ll take a 20-minute open-air, scenic St. Charles Ave Street Car ride from our hotel, with great photo ops along the way. The park itself offers variety of flora and fauna, waterfalls, and even a zoo. For lunch, Magazine Street is a funky area teeming with fun restaurants, antique stores, art galleries, and other quirky shops. Our afternoon will continue with a walking tour of the Garden District, where we’ll wander the streets of this culturally rich area. In the heart of the Garden District is the Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 and Lafayette Cemetery No. 2, two of New Orleans’ many historical cemeteries. In the evening we’ll enjoy our “Farewell Dinner” at one of New Orleans’ famous restaurants. (B) (D)

Friday (6)  French Quarter

On our last morning we take a sunrise stroll back through the French Quarter as the city is awakening. We will focus on low light photography, harsh shadows and the beauty of an empty city. After we will enjoy breakfast while reviewing our past week’s photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell before parting ways. We encourage you to extend your stay in Louisiana and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
