PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURE VACATIONS

Montreal & Quebec

Mount Royal, Old Montreal, Latin Quarter and Old Quebec

A touch of old world Europe in North America.

Montreal & Quebec Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Situated on an island in the St. Lawrence River at the historically highest navigable point, Montreal has been a strategic location since before the arrival of Europeans in Canada. A thriving Mohawk Indian town called Hochelaga was on the site of present-day Montreal when explorer Jacques Cartier first visited in 1535. A hundred years later, in 1642, the tiny town of Ville-Marie was founded as a Sulpician mission by Paul Chomedey, sieur de Maisonneuve. It soon became a centre of the fur trade. After its capture by the English in 1762, Montreal remained (until the 1970s) the most important city in Canada and was briefly capital of the province in the 1840s. Today Montreal is the second-largest French-speaking (as a mother language) city in the world, behind Paris, and is consistently rated as one of the world's most livable cities. Monocle Magazine called it "Canada's Cultural Capital" and it was recently named a UNESCO City of Design.

Quebec City is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Treasure and is surrounded by gorgeous landscapes, historical, cultural and outdoor activities, exquisite food as well as international events await. Old Quebec is famous for its European charm and well-preserved architectural treasures. The entire district ,which is best explored on foot, is a living history book and every garden, building and street corner is its own chapter. Discover 400 years of history in the cradle of French civilization in North America.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the beautiful city of Montreal.

MONTREAL | QUEBEC 6 DAYS

Sunday (1)  Old Montreal

We meet on Sunday at the newest luxury boutique hotel in Montreal, the Le Westin Montreal where we will start the day discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. From here we will set out for a wonderful day of photography throughout Old Montreal, also known as Vieux-Montréal.  In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants in Old Montreal. (D)

Monday (2)  Mount Royal - Plateau Mont-Royal

On day two we will head north and explore the Mount Royal neighborhood and its neighboring Plateau Mont-Royal. Mount Royal means mountain, and that’s precisely where we’ll be, on the mountain overlooking the city and the St. Laurence river. After, we’ll visit and lunch at Plateau Mont-Royal, where Montréalers feel most at home -- away from downtown's chattering pace and the more touristed Vieux-Montréal. It's where they come to shop, dine, and play. The Plateau has a vibrant ethnic atmosphere that fluctuates with each new immigration surge. It’s a great place to capture the Montreal not everyone gets to see, much like most of the neighborhoods we will visit on our workshop. (B)

Tuesday (3)  Centre Ville - Latin Quarter - Old Montreal

On Tuesday we will visit Centre Ville, or Downtown. This area contains the Montréal skyline's most dramatic elements including modern skyscrapers and luxury hotels, sprinkled among interesting shops and architecture dating back to the turn of the 20th century. Many of the stately homes were torn down when skyscrapers began to rise here after World War II, but some remain. After lunch we explore the Latin Quarter, known for it’s bohemian girt and youth. Here we will find many photographic opportunities among the people, shops and architecture. Next we are back in Old Montreal photographing more of this beautiful neighborhood, including the breathtaking Notre Dame Cathedral. In the evening we will visit the Rue Crescent, one of Montréal's major dining and nightlife districts where the party atmosphere that pervades after dark never quite fades, and builds to crescendos as weekends approach. (B)

Wednesday (4)  Quebec Countryside - Old Quebec

On day four we depart Montreal for a drive north into the French Canadian countryside where often the language spoken is only Quebecois (or French Canadian). The landscape, mountains and rivers are stunningly beautiful throughout this region and a great place to capture some natural beauty. We’ll enjoy a nice lunch while discussing photography techniques and style. After lunch we arrive at our hotel in Old Quebec City. We’ll spend the late afternoon and evening photographing the iconic structures of Upper Town including the Château Frontenac and the star-shaped Citadel, which dominates the city and the St. Lawrence River. (B)

Thursday (5)  Old Quebec

Early on Thursday morning we explore Old Quebec’s Lower Town and all its historic charm. Here we will photograph the homes, shops, and ancient streets sprawled at the base of the cliffs that center around Place Royale, a square on the site of the garden of Champlain’s Habitation. After lunch we will break to review the weeks photos. We spend the late afternoon photographing shopkeepers and locals, and in the evening, we enjoy our wonderful “Farewell Dinner, with great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Friday (6)  Old Quebec - Montreal

On day six during our early morning breakfast discussion, we will review our past weeks photos. After we depart for our return to Montreal where we will bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in Montreal or elsewhere in Canada and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
