Enjoy the magic of this visually stunning island, rich in history and culture.

Malta Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Malta is one of the most visually stunning countries that resembles a rich of mix of ancient Jerusalem, ancient Rome and the Greek Islands. Malta is a Southern European country consisting of an archipelago (series of islands) situated in the centre of the Mediterranean, 50 miles south of Sicily, 175 miles east of North Africa. Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterized by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited.

Malta is also one of the world's smallest states and one of the most densely populated countries worldwide. Malta is ancient, but impeccably preserved. There is so much charm, character and texture in the design of the doors, windows, and streets. It's a feast for the eyes (and the camera). With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history.

Malta is internationally renowned as a tourist destination, with unlimited swimming and snorkeling options in caves and blue grottos around the island. While the country has a raw chiseled terrain, it more than makes up for it in the hand-painted colors of the fishing boats and garden flowers. Throughout history, Malta's location has given it great strategic importance, and a succession of powers including the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards, Knights of St John, French and the British ruled the islands. The country has been defending its conquerors for centuries. Malta gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1964 and became a republic in 1974, however the churches and cathedrals have maintained their original influences from each of their respective rulers for hundreds of years.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the stunning island country of Malta.

MALTA 6 DAYS

Sunday (1)  Gozo - Kercem

We meet on Sunday morning at our beautiful hotel, where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. We will learn a little bit about Gozo and Malta to set expectations for the group about our week's adventures. In the afternoon we venture to small and tranquil village of Kercem. Due to its unique cliff edge position, guests can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Lunzjata Valley, a favorite spot for both local and foreign painters and take part in the Kercem festival, a visual tour de force of color, celebration, sound and fireworks. In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants. (D)

Monday (2)  Gozo - San Lawrenz - Dwerja - Victoria

At breakfast we'll discuss photography workflow. We''ll discuss the best software, tips, tricks and great ways to make your images look their best. After breakfast we will set out to explore the town of Victoria. See Gozo 360, a film that will give us all inspiration to capture the wonder of Malta. Victoria is the capitol of Gozo and in the heart of Victoria lies the Citadella (Citadel), which has been the centre of activity of the island since possibly Neolithic times, but is known to be first fortified during the Bronze Age c. 1500 BC. In Victoria, we'll snack on local pastizzi - a sublime flaky filo dough crust with herbed/seasoned mashed peas in the center. The bakeries are run by 4th and 5th generation families and the stoves are nearly as old! Victoria is an ancient town with charming architecture From here we will venture to the jewel of Gozo, the Azure Window (featured in Clash of the Titans and Game of Thrones). The Azure Window is in San Lawrenz, a hilltop village near some of the Gozo's most spectacular coastline at Dwerja. The Malta Tourism Authority has nominated the Azure Window to be the 8th wonder of the world. The stunning landscape and sweeping vistas make this a must-see for photographers of every skill level. It’s also a great chance to view the coastline by boat, and then explore the rugged shoreline where the Azure Window takes center stage. (B)

Tuesday (3)  Gozo - Valletta

After checkout, we'll venture on an early morning photo adventure to the hill-top panoramic scene overlooking Comino, the small island in the middle of Gozo and Malta. This photo opp pit-stop will provide a nice way to say good-bye to Gozo. We head by ferry to the main island of Malta and the city of Valletta, Malta’s largest city and the Capital. After checking into the beautiful hotel in Valetta, we'll set our lens on the visually rich city with stops at St. Johns Cathedral, the Grand Harbour, and "Malta Experience 5D". a stunning short-film about Malta. We'll kick off our first night in Valletta with a great dinner at Pntonino on the harbor for panoramic view of the ancient city. Enjoy evening strolls along the Valetta waterfront where we can take HDR wide angle photos and panoramic’s. (B)

Wednesday (4)  Blue Grotto - Popeye Village - Mdina

Early morning on day four we travel to the Blue Grotto (Taht il-Hnejja) which is actually a number of sea caverns on the southern coast of Malta, west of the Wied iz-Żurrieq harbor near the village of Żurrieq. Every day from sunrise until about 1 PM a unique sight can be observed here. The location of the cave combined with the sunlight lead to the water mirroring showing numerous shades of blue. Several caverns mirror the brilliant phosphorescent colors of the underwater flora; other caverns show a deep dark shade of blue. The Blue Grotto is a popular destination on the island of Malta. It was also used for a scene of the 2004 film Troy, starring Brad Pitt. After the boat tour, we can spend some in the water along the coast. After lunch we take an afternoon trip to Popeye Village, also known as Sweethaven Village. It is a group of rustic and ramshackle wooden buildings located at Anchor Bay in the north-west corner of the Mediterranean island of Malta, two miles from the village of Mellieħa. It was built as the movie set in 1979 for the Robin Williams movie Popeye and is an incredible photo treat. We'll then take a short jaunt over to Gnenjna Bay cliffs and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, a crescent shaped beach beneath extensive clay slopes with a beautiful strip of reddish sand which shelves gently into the depths.for some truly gorgeous cliff-side photography. (B)

Thursday (5)  Cospicua - Senglea - Vittoriosa

On day five we tour "the three cities" which make up Birgu. The historic Vittoriosa Waterfront contains the former Palace of the General of the Galleys and the Order of St John's treasury. Birgu is beautiful. Walk down and look at the yachts docked in the Marina. We can take some time to just wander the narrow streets. There are some really old homes that will have historical info plaques near their doors. There is so much history in Birgu, it's incredible. But the best way to 'get it' is to just wander and explore with your lens. In the afternoon, we can catch an interactive performance at The Victorian Garrison, where guides dressed as soldiers from the 19th century walk tourists through the fortification, while inside, daily life in a British garrison of the late 19th century is re-enacted. Visitors also get the opportunity to fire a cannon or a musket and see the world’s largest cannon. And in the evening we will be treated to a wonderful “Farewell Dinner” by a super talented chef who does some cool traditional Maltese dishes, but with a twist. (B) (D)

Friday (6)  Valletta

On our final day we will have our final group discussion, review our past weeks photos, trade contact information and say goodbye.  We urge you to extend your stay and practice all the photography skills you have learned over the six days in other towns in Malta. (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
