PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURE VACATIONS

Hawaii

Oahu and Kauai... Two amazing photographic adventures

Seascapes, landscapes, nature, people and underwater photography.

Hawaii Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Hawaii, undoubtedly, is home to some of the most beautiful islands in the world. Aside from it’s breathtaking natural beauty, the Hawaiian Islands are full of outdoor activities and adventures. Two of the islands we will be visiting are Oahu and Kauai (an add-on extension). With their pristine beaches, friendly local people, world-class surf and diving, and tropical rain forests filled with waterfalls, Oahu and Kauai make the perfect destinations to learn and grow your photography skills. The wide range of activities allows for memorable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities you will never forget.

Sometimes called “The Gathering Place,” Oahu certainly lives up to its name. The third largest Hawaiian island is home to the majority of Hawaii’s diverse population, a fusion of east and west cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. It’s this fundamental contrast between the ancient and the modern that makes discovering Oahu so enjoyable. The North Shore of Oahu and its surrounding beaches are sought after by the best surfers in the world, where we will explore the wonders of wave, nature, landscape, seascape and underwater photography.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the extreme diversity, color and sunshine of Hawaii. Aloha!

HAWAII 5 DAYS

Sunday (1)  Oahu - North Shore - Pipeline- Sunset Beach - Haleiwa

We begin our day on the beautiful North Shore of Oahu and check into the magnificent Turtle Bay Resort. At lunch we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. Afterwards we don't waste any time cruising the North Shore’s local hot spots such as Sunset Beach and the Pipeline, checking out the surf while working our way to a gorgeous sunset destination. We’ll focus on the action and the use of faster shutter speeds while shooting moving surfers carving up the Pipeline, and what works best for capturing the action. This is a beautiful introduction to Hawaii and the North Shore lifestyle. We have a favorite beach to capture sunsets when the waves are up, so we promise not to disappoint! After a great day of photography we wind down for our famous “Welcome Dinner” in the historic town of Haleiwa. Aloha! (D)

Monday (2)  Oahu - West Shore

On Monday we take a drive to the west side of the island, the side of Oahu that holds the most magic and beauty in our eyes. Since weather is always a factor in Hawaii, deciding whether to shoot from the water or shoot from shore is always dependent on the waves and weather. Either way there is an abundance of subject matter ranging from gorgeous sweet smelling plumeria flowers and Hawaiian sea turtles (honu), to landscapes, beaches, waves, surfers, body boarders, locals and rainbows. You get the idea! We’ll look to get many paradise style shots of some of Hawaii's most sacred valleys and land, as well as an amazing sunsets. We will “talk story” as the locals like to say about photography, as well as expose you to many local Hawaiian ways. We prefer to stay away from the tourists and blend in with the locals, capturing their vibe and lifestyle. We will spend the day playing, exploring and taking our time answering any questions along the way as we discover different creative options for capturing the beauty. (B)

Tuesday (3)  Oahu - Hanauma Bay - North Shore - Makapuʻu

On day three we take a very early drive to the east side of the island… the Windward side. Here we will catch sunrise at Hanauma Bay and follow up with a light breakfast. From there we can grab our snorkel gear and head down to the bay, jump in the water and see some of the most beautiful and colorful sea life, such as tropical fish and honu/sea turtles. In abundance, up close and personal. We’ll discuss taking quality underwater images and go over our camera settings, GoPro settings, and if you are using an iPhone with an underwater housing, the best way to prepare it before entering the water. From here we will work our way back to the North Shore taking the scenic route, stopping along the way for more and more amazing photos. If we have time we will stop at a gorgeous local arboretum which has plenty of natural beauty. For lunch we will stop at one of our favorite little places for a healthy lunch… their fish tacos are AMAZING! We will be on the North Shore for sunset choosing our destination wisely and wrap with dinner. On our way we will find beautiful Hawaiian outlooks where we have options for short hikes and/or photo oops that are iconic Hawaii views such as Makapu’u, Sandy's Beach, a local blow hole, and more. Aloha! (B)

Wednesday (4)  Oahu - Farmers Markets - Dolphin Tour

Day four is a flexible day depending on the weather and the vibe of the group. We’ll surprise you with some amazing opportunities, and promise not to disappoint. A visit to local farmers markets, the Dole plantation, small towns and gift shops, capturing travel photography as the day unfolds. This is the island way of life. A dolphin tour is a great way to see and experience spinner dolphins and bottle nose dolphins. Either way you are sure to enjoy todays agenda. After a long day, we head back to our hotel and end the evening with a wonderful “Farewell Dinner.” remembering all the great experiences throughout the week. (B) (D)

Thursday (5)  Oahu - Turtle Bay

We begin our last day in Hawaii with another Hawaiian sunrise. From there we will work our way slowly back to the resort. We will take advantage of every last second seeing and capturing as much magic as we can before the morning is over. Before we checkout we will review our past week’s photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell before parting ways. We encourage you to extend your stay in Hawaii, or join us on our magical 3 day extension to Kauai, and make good use of everything you will have learned on our photo adventure. Aloha! (B)

 INSPIRE newsletter

Thursday (5)  North Shore

Those who attended our Hawaii Photo Adventure will remain at the Turtle Bay Resort and enjoy a relaxing afternoon and evening. Those arriving for the Kauai extension can checkin to the hotel and settle in. We will be available on this day to review photos and discuss photography. (B)

Friday (6)  Kauai - Northern Shores

On Friday we rise early for a morning flight to Kauai, where we will begin our adventure. First by working our way slowly up the north side of the island where we will eventually catch the sunset at the end of the day. Although Kauai and Oahu are neighboring islands, they possess a very different vibe. Our drive up to the north side of the island will be epic. We will stop at two waterfalls along the way that will leave your speechless! We will work on long exposure techniques utilizing ND filters and slow shutter speeds. Here we will be freezing and blurring the falls to make for a more artistic and creative image. We will also explore the use of polarizer filters to bring out the colors of the rainbow from either the rainbows or the spectrums from the waterfalls spray. From there we will grab a light lunch and continue onward. We will stop at local quaint villages and remote beaches we know about. Kauai will not disappoint and is sure to be a life changing experience with plenty of photo opportunities. Kauai is a truly religious and sacred island. Finally we will capture the sunset at a little secret spot on the North shore where we will spend the final moments of light and reflect on the day. Afterwards, we checkin to our B&B and head somewhere special for dinner. (B)

Saturday (7)  Kauai - Western Shores

We checkout after breakfast and begin our journey to the west side of the island to view and photograph beautiful vistas and attractions such as lighthouses, blowholes, and other Hawaiian beauties. Depending on the weather and the day we can take it easy and go with the flow of the island, the Hawaii way. West Kauai is an remarkable blend of spectacular natural wonders and Hawaiian cultural landmarks. Awe-inspiring Waimea Canyon is just the beginning. The West Side is home to a few of Kauai’s most historic places and scenic wonders, the most famous of which is the breathtaking Waimea Canyon, the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” Beyond the gorges and cliffs of Waimea Canyon we will visit Kokee State Park where we’ll find yet another amazing view from the Kalalau Lookout. The two small towns of Waimea and Hanapepe also grace the West Side and where in 1778, Captain Cook first landed in the Hawaiian Islands. We’ll end our day at our B&B. Aloha! (B)

Sunday (8)  Kauai - Oahu

On Sunday morning we set out for some final photos before returning to our B&B for a “Farewell Breakfast”. We’ll review our Kauai photos, trade contact information and head to the airport for our return flight back to Oahu. Aloha! (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
