Antigua, Lake Atitlán & Chichicastenango

A place of rare beauty, major historical significance and vibrant culture.

Guatemala Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Guatemala is located in Central America, bordering Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. It shares coasts on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Mysterious and often challenging, Central America’s most diverse country offers landscapes and authentic experiences that have been captivating travelers for centuries.

Our adventure brings us to Antigua and Lake Atitlan. Antigua is the former capital, and a city that boasts an impressive catalog of colonial relics in a magnificent setting. Streetscapes of pastel facades unfold beneath three volcanoes. Many old ecclesiastical and civic structures are beautifully renovated, while others retain tumbledown charm, with fragments strewn about parklike grounds.

Thanks to the dozens of Spanish-language schools that operate here, Antigua is a global hot spot. Yet it remains a vibrant Guatemalan town; its churches, plazas and markets are throbbing with activity. Outside the city, indigenous communities, coffee plantations and volcanoes offer ample opportunities for exploration.

Perhaps the real miracle of Antigua is its resilience. Despite earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and floods, followed by virtual abandonment, it has re-emerged with a vengeance, buoyed by the pride of its inhabitants.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. What better place to express your creativity than beautiful Guatemala.

Day 1 | Antigua

We meet at our hotel in the morning, where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During lunch we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. After lunch we set out to photograph our magnificent hotel and the grounds that surround it. About our hotel... In its earliest days, Casa Santo Domingo was the bastion of one of the grandest convents of America: a sanctuary that sheltered the followers of the order of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Today, the hotel stands as an important monument, housing and preserving the treasures from the baroque era of ancestral America. Each corner of this house, each stone, each image and each piece that composes this hotel museum is a chapter in the story of our beautiful hotel. In the evening we enjoy a wonderful “Welcome Dinner” at our hotel. (D)

Day 2 | Antigua

On day two, after an early breakfast we depart our hotel for nearby Antigua, a small city surrounded by volcanoes. Antigua is renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored following a 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua’s 200-year reign as Guatemala’s colonial capital. Notable architectural examples include baroque La Merced church. Antigua is also an integral part of the city’s famous Semana Santa, the Roman Catholic celebration of holy week with parades and rituals. We will photograph volcanoes, architecture, nature, merchants, indigenous people and more. Finally, in the evening we will focus on a sunset photography session. (B)

Day 3 | Antigua - Mayan Village - Coffee Plantation

We are up early to photograph the city of Antigua as it comes to life. After breakfast in Antigua we head off to explore a local Mayan community capturing lifestyle, people and culture. Next up we visit an amazing local coffee plantation where we will learn about the cultivation and processing of coffee on the farm, a tradition that dates back 130 years to 1870. We will enjoy a wonderful lunch at the farm (which also hosts a magnificent 5-star resort hotel and restaurant). (B)

Day 4 | Atitlán Lake - Santiago Atitlán - Panajachel

We depart Antigua very early for a morning drive to Panajachel, Atitlán. Upon our arrival we will board a boat where we will travel the lake visiting small Mayan villages capturing the life of these indigenous people. We will spend the entire morning exploring. We will stop for lunch at Santiago Atitlán, a village on the lake. In the afternoon we return to Panajachel by boat where we will check into our hotel. Our hotel is located right on the lake with stunning views of several volcanos. (B)

Day 5 | Chichicastenango

After breakfast we travel to Chichicastenango. Here we will visit the colorful markets, including a vegetable market and the “Masquería”, a place where ceremonial masks and traditional clothes are made. In the afternoon we are treated to a private Mayan religious ceremony. A Mayan priest, “Xamán” will perform a ritual in gratitude for the Earth and Mother Nature. (B)

Day 6 | Atitlán Lake - Calle Santander - San Antonio Palopó

On day six we visit nearby Calle Santander and its very colorful street market where Mayan people sell products. In the afternoon we go to San Antonio Palopó, exploring the village and its very traditional Mayan works (known as Telares). In the late afternoon we return to our hotel for a sunset shoot. (B)

Day 7 | Antigua

After breakfast we return to Antigua and check back into our hotel, Casa Santo Domingo. Here we enjoy a well deserved rest. For those interested in returning to Antigua for some afternoon shots, we will be happy to arrange transportation to the city. In the evening we celebrate with a wonderful “Farewell Dinner” in Antigua. (B) (D)

Day 8 | Antigua

On our last morning, we will enjoy a sunrise shoot followed by breakfast and a review of our past week’s photos. After we trade contact information and sadly bid you farewell. We encourage you to extend your stay in Guatemala or Central America and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

Add our 8-Day “Mexico City Photo Adventure” before Guatemala for 16 amazing days of culture and photography.

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
