Chile el Grande Norte

Atacama, Calama, San Pedro, Lagunas, Valparaiso

Prepare to marvel at the natural wonders that await you.

Chile Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Chile, the country of a thousand faces, has a wide diversity of landscapes. Atacama, in el Grande Norte, is filled with natural wonders. We will get to marvel and photograph surreal places such as the salars of Atacama, and the desert of the moon, another planet to photograph. The Geysers of Tatio (4600 m), photographed during the first rays of the early morning light and fog, creates nothing short of breathtaking photography. The Surryaplaza, with her colorful rock formations, as well as the abandoned villages and mines with their colorful walls, each tell stories of the past.

In Chile, the sky seems much larger then anywhere else on the planet, a sky which gives us a palette of splendid colors at sunset. And El Grande Norte is such a precious and unique place for landscape photographers.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our week together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than in magical Chile.

Saturday (1)  Santiago

We meet at our hotel on Saturday morning, where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During lunch we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. After lunch we set out to photograph the city of Santiago as our introduction to Chile. Santiago is a cosmopolitan city unlike the rest of our adventure. In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants in Santiago. (D)

Sunday (2)  Santiago - Calama - San Pedro de Atacama

After breakfast we depart Santiago for our flight to Calama in the far north of Chile, where we will travel to San Pedro de Atacama. A sweet oasis, and our base from where we will discover the natural wonders of the region of Atacama, a treasure for photographers. After some rest, we will go and discover the splendid view over the valley de la Luna and capture the sunset light. (B)

Monday (3)  La Laguna Cejar

On day three we up early to discover the inside paths of the valley de la Luna with the sculptural stone formations. In the afternoon, we drive to the splendid scene of the Laguna Cejar, we will wait for the sunset and play with the mirroring reflections on the water filled with salt crystals. (B)

Tuesday (4)  The Tatio Geysers - Machuca

We depart in the early morning hours to head high up to the Geysers of Tatio (4600 m). It will be cold until the sun rises. Yet when the first sun rays appear through the morning fog of the geysers, the amazing photogenic scenes will create such a warming joy for our photographers. On our way back we will stop at Machuca, a typical Chilean rural village and an excellent opportunity to capture the people of Chile. (B)

Wednesday (5)  Atacama Salt Flat - Lakes Miscanti and Miniques

We will leave for the lac Chaxa at sunrise. These salt flats are the breeding grounds for the beautiful and graceful flamingo birds. After a morning photographing the flats and birds we will visit a nearby village and go to the altiplanos Lagunas Miscanti and Miniques. Laguna Miscanti is a brackish water lake. Miniques volcano and Cerro Miscanti tower over this lake. This heart-shaped lake has a deep blue color. (B)

Thursday (6)  Rainbow Valley - Rio Grande

The hills and mountains of Arcoiris Valley are stunning with their multi-colored terrain. From dark-green with white peaks, to red with purple tones. And when the sun shines, we also see yellow and orange, which comes from the many different minerals that reflect the incoming light. You will be in awe with the great images you will have the opportunity to capture! On our return to our hotel we will visit a village named Rio Grande. Our last opportunity to spend with the locals of northern Chile. (B)

Friday (7)  San Pedro - Calama - Santiago

After an early morning checkout, we will stop by the valle de Arcois for one last time to capture the beautiful sunrise light. Then we are off to Calama for our flight back to Santiago. After our hotel check-in we head out for the afternoon to discover more of Santiago. (B)

Saturday (8)  Valparaiso

We depart Santiago in the morning for a drive to the port city of Valparaiso where we will spend the day. Pablo Neruda said it best: “Valparaiso, how absurd you are… you haven't combed your hair, you've never had time to get dressed, life has always surprised you.” This interesting and colorful city is wonderful to photograph. It has seduced writers, poets, artists and photographers for years. We will explore the hills and the painted houses, la Quinta Vergara, the avenue San Martin, the avenue Perú, the square Sotomayor, El Peral and the walk of the Yougoslaves. After returning to Santiago, we prepare for our festive “Farewell Dinner”, discuss the events of the trip, share our favorite photos and enjoy the fun and laughter. (B) (D)

Sunday (9)  Santiago

On our final day we will enjoy breakfast, have our final discussion, review photos, trade contact information, and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in Chile or elsewhere in South America and make good use of all the wonderful photographic techniques you will learn on our amazing photo adventure. (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
