BUENOS AIRES

Puerto Madero, La Boca, San Telmo, Luján, Colonia and more

Like the Tango, BA is captivating, seductive, and bustling with excited energy.

Argentina, the eighth-largest country in the world, is home to many historical sites and is undoubtedly teeming with culture. On our 6-day Buenos Aires Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure, we get to experience a passionate and dynamic city that’s always on the move. It is the capital and largest city in Argentina, and where we will be spending most of our time exploring the many “barrios” (aka neighborhoods), which are unique in their own ways. Known for its European-style architecture, Buenos Aires offers plenty of opportunities to photograph its intricate, beautiful buildings and landmarks. Between the architecture, local markets, the fascinating Recoleta Cemetery, a colorful barrio of La Boca, there is no doubt Buenos Aires will prove to be an incredible site to take exceptional photos.

Just an hour’s ferry ride from Buenos Aires is one of the oldest towns in South America—Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. A day trip to this historic village, where you will not want to stop taking photos for a second, will take you back in time.

The small town of Luján will be an off-the-beaten-path day trip just outside of Buenos Aires—an experience you will never forget. The zoo in the town, which seems to be more like a nature conservancy, offers the opportunity for us to take pictures with the animals. We’re talking tigers, lions, elephants, lion cubs, etc. You will be able to feed the animals, hold baby lion cubs, and get up close and personal to these animals.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your newfound skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. What better place to express your creativity than beautiful Buenos Aires.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

BUENOS AIRES 6 DAYS

Day 1 | Buenos Aires - Puerto Madero

Welcome to BA! We meet at our hotel in the morning and begin by discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. At lunch, we’ll have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles, and techniques. After lunch, we begin our photo walk and explore Puerto Madero. With its tall, modern buildings, this area along the river holds the Puente de la Mujer bridge.

The day concludes with a Welcome Dinner at one of our favorite Argentine restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | La Boca - San Telmo

On day two, we depart the hotel to explore the famous area of La Boca, full of colorful houses and tango dancers around every corner. We’ll also spend time exploring San Telmo, where we’ll find charming, narrow streets and sites such as the Plaza de Mayo, Casa Rosada (aka the Pink Palace), San Telmo Market and the Palace of San Telmo before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.

Our afternoon will start off by walking along the widest avenue in the world, the Avenida 9 de Julio, where the famous landmark of Buenos Aires, the Obelisk, stands. We’ll continue on back towards the hotel through the pedestrian shopping streets of the town, perfect for people watching and admiring the culture and urban parks nearby. (B)

Day 3 | Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay)

Just an easy one-hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires, this day will be spent on the other side of the Rio de la Plata in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay (don’t forget your passports). One of South America’s oldest towns, Colonia offers incredible history in this quaint cobblestoned town along the water. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to the oldest street in Uruguay, as well as its oldest church, dating back to 1695.

We’ll stroll around this walkable town seeing different sites and colonial buildings, and can even climb to the top of the lighthouse for incredible views of the town. We will enjoy lunch at a traditional Uruguayan restaurant before continuing our stroll through the town and taking the ferry back to Recoleta for the remainder of the evening. (B)

Day 4 | Luján Zoo and Town Center

Today will consist of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most. Just an hour outside of the city is the Luján Zoo*, where the animals are very loosely confined, which gives visitors the chance to hold, pet, and feed the animals. Amongst these animals are tigers, elephants, lions, lion cubs, etc. The zoo is more of a large park where the animals, rather than being contained in small areas, are wandering around in a large fenced area where visitors can get up close and personal with the animals.

Not far from the zoo is the small town center of Luján. We’ll see the intricate architecture of this square, with the beautiful Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Lujan at its end. After we head back to the hotel, you may want to choose to have dinner in one of the nearby barrios, such as Palermo Soho, which is known for its restaurants and nightlife. (B)

*This is a must-do if anyone is even remotely interested in wildlife; the spectacular opportunity to photograph animals up close and take photos with the animals.

Day 5 | Recoleta - Palermo Soho - Palermo Hollywood

On day five we set out to explore the sights and take in the culture of the barrio of Recoleta. Our main focus, the Recoleta Cemetery, is a sight to see. There will be lots of time spent photographing the beautiful gravestones, and we will see the famous grave of Evita before strolling through the streets of Recoleta and the nearby parks before lunch.

For lunch, we will set out to Palermo Soho, home to tons of restaurants, bars, boutiques, and coffee shops. After taking in the culture of Palermo Soho, we will admire the old, Spanish-style architecture that is present in the adjacent town of Palermo Hollywood (aka Palermo Viejo). In the evening we celebrate with our Farewell Dinner and discuss the week’s events and amazing photo opportunities. (B) (D)

Day 6 | Buenos Aires

On our last morning, we will enjoy breakfast while reviewing our past week’s photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell before parting ways.

We encourage you to extend your stay in Argentina and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion
